LESSON PLAN: What did you do yesterday? FOCUS: Past simple

TIME: 45 – 50 minutes LEVEL: Pre-intermediate

MAIN OBJECTIVES After this lesson, Ss will be able to ask and answer questions using simple past tense.

LANGUAGE Practice positive, negative and question forms in the past simple.

Warm-up Activity: On the board write some verbs in the simple past form: showed brought came bought got up rode ate played gave ran listened read watched got broke spoke talked cut stopped had saw told

Then, divide Ss into two teams, standing at the back of the classroom. Give each team a different colored board marker. Tell Ss that when I say a verb in its infinitive, one person from each team must run to the board and circle the same verb in its past simple form. The first person to circle the correct verb gets a point for their team. Each student isn't allowed to do it again unless all his team participated. The winner is the team with the most points when all the words have been circled.

Ask students which ending is correct. Explain that we use the past simple when talking about things which we did yesterday or in the past.

2- On the board write: Yesterday I play football.

Ask students what the missing word is. Ask students to put two or three other sentences into the past simple until you are sure they get the idea.

3- On the board write: I played football. football.



I didn’t play

I watched television. television.



I didn’t watch

Read what is written on the board, shaking your head when reading the negative sentences to indicate that these things did not happen.

4- On the board write: I read a book. read a book. I bought an ice cream. ice cream. I saw my friend. my friend.







Ask students to fill in the blanks. Do more examples orally until you are sure students understand.

5- On the board write: you / play football / yesterday ? Ask students to make these words into a question. Using other prompts like the one above, ask students to form questions in the past simple.

COMMUNICATION PRACTICE ACTIVITY (1) 10 mnts.

Hand out a copy of ‘Lucy and Michael’ to each student.

COMMUNICATION PRACTICE ACTIVITY (2) 10 mnts.

On the board write: do / yesterday / did / what / you‫؟‬ Ask the students to rearrange the words to form a question.

Hand out a copy of ‘Jack’s day’ to each student. Show students the picture of ‘Jack’ and explain that he was asked the question “What did you do yesterday?” and this is his answer. Read the text at a normal speed and tell the students to tick the things that Jack did yesterday.

PRODUCTION ACTIVITY 10 mnts Ask a strong student “What did you do yesterday?” Ask another student “Did you watch television yesterday?”

On the board write: Did you _______ yesterday? Yes, I did. No, I didn’t. Ask individual students questions using ‘Did you _______ yesterday?’ Elicit ‘Yes, I did’ and ‘No, I didn’t.’ Hand out a copy of the ‘Questionnaire’ to each student. Tell them first to fill in the ‘You’ column. Then tell the students to find a partner and ask them questions to fill in the ‘Partner 1’ column. Students then change partners to complete the ‘Partner 2’ column.

PRESENTATION

COMMUNICATION PRACTICE ACTIVITY

This presentation revises the form of the past simple rather than teaches it from scratch. Before students read the text, ask them to look at the pictures and ask them questions about what they can see. Pre-teach the word ‘climbing frame’.

Answer: Yesterday Lucy and Michael got up late because they didn’t have to go to school. They watched television while they ate their breakfast. After breakfast they went to the park, they both ran to the climbing frame, but Michael got there first. They played on the climbing frame for a long time. In the afternoon Lucy and Michael went to a birthday party. It was their grandmother’s birthday. Lucy gave her grandmother a present and a card and later they all ate cake.

Before doing the listening activity, ask the students about the boy in the picture, eg. how old do they think he is.

PRACTICE

Tell the students that you will read the text more than once, so it doesn’t matter if they do not understand everything the first time.

ACTIVITY

Text: What did I do yesterday? Well, I got up really early, and I went out and bought the newspaper for my father. Then at ten o’clock I went to the park with my friend Peter, we played basketball, then we bought an ice cream, and we rode our bikes home. In the afternoon I watched television, then I went to my bedroom and did my homework. In the evening I listened to music and read my book. Then, at nine o’clock I went to bed.

PRODUCTION ACTIVITY

Monitor to check that students are using the target language. If time permits, students could write a few short sentences about the results of their questionnaire as a follow up activity. Eg. Daisy watched television, saw her friend and rode a bike yesterday, but she didn’t go to school or do her homework.

WRAP-UP ACTIVITY

Do the first exercise on the board to show the class an example.
