III.SETTING The setting of the story played an integral part on setting the mood and atmosphere of the story to deliver effectively what the author wants to point out when he wrote it. This story was situated in a public place where people like the boy in the story lurk abundantly. In this way, the story smoothly made its way into setting up the mood of the scene for the climax happen.
IV. CHARACTERS Aling Martha - The protagonist and the antagonist of Ang Kalupi. She accussed the boy that she believes steals her KALUPI/WALLET. Andres Reyes – the boy who is accused by Aling Martha Fernando Police Officers- who catches the boy Aling Godyang – The vendor Graduating Daughter – her daughter
V. POINTS OF VIEW The story follows the view of the protagonist, Aling Marta. It is her character who manipulates the flow of the story. It follows her decisions, personality and dialogues. Her character also sets the mood and theme of the short story.
VI. THEME The main theme of this story is the unequal scrutiny received by low people from those that are excelling in keeping up with the society. People tend to judge the people they meet during their lives on what they look like on the outside without realizing that not everything that meets the eye satisfies the truth. Not all that are seen are true. Sometimes, all it takes is a second look to see things that you should really look at.
VII. PLOT A. Expository The sequence of events was clearly presented. Having its beginning, its middle, and of course, its end. The story began with the part where the reason Aling Martha was doing the market was stated and the protagonist’s character and personality was introduced. The middle part of the story was comprised mainly the conflicts between Aling Martha and the boy she bumped into the market. Also, the character of the boy was disclosed. Finally, the last part, the ending, revealed the real reason why Aling Martha has not found her wallet, wrapping up and concluding the story as a tragedy.
B. Rising action The Story started to build up its emotional when mother noticed that her wallet is not in her pocket anymore. She immediately searched for, but fails to find it. When she saw an untidy child, she then accused him for stealing her wallet. She exchanged ARGUMENTS WITH THE CHILD IN FRONT OF ALL THE MARKET-GOERS WITHOUT humility and calmness.
C. Climax After the argument in the market, mother asked the policemen to hold the child captive. The child refused to go. He struggled then ran away. He was hit by the something in the street. The child died without even proving himself clean.
D. Falling Action The story highlighted several types of conflicts: person against person, person against self, and of course, individual against society conflict. The person to person conflict is clearly depicted through the encounters in the middle of the plot: the confrontations between Aling Marta and the boy, the struggle between the police man and the boy, and when the police man and Aling were arguing. On the other hand, he person against self conflict came about when Aling Marta was on the way home- when she was thinking whether she did the right thing or not that caused the sudden accident and death of the boy because of her deeds. While the two conflicts were obviously expressed, the last conflict, individual to society, was implied. The present society is under the impression of discriminating those that are needy and poverty-stricken. The mere remark of the class made people judge and aling Marta, being the critic she really was, assessed the child or the boy as someone doing dirty work to acquire money because of his indecent appearance, thus, making way for the main problem in the story. Eventually, the child died without proving his innocence then, the KALUPI/WALLET of Aling Marta Suddenly Found. Aling Marta realized that the innocence of the boy which he wants to prove is true.
E. Denouement or Resolution Since the boy was accused by Aling Marta in the matter of stealing her wallet, aling Marta commanded the policeman to catch the boy then the boy runs away because he kow himself that he is innocent and doesn’t want to jail by the wrong accusation. The boy decided to go away because Aling Marta does not believe about the boy’s said. The boy says he is innocent and no matter what Aling Marta does to him, the KALUPI/WALLET will not recover with him because he is absolutely innocent. The Chase takes no longer, the child hits with the car. This accident makes the child’s life in risk. After the accident, Aling Marta goes home then she is suddenly informed by her husband that her KALUPI/WALLET is not disappeared. The KALUPI/WALLET was forgotten by her. Therefore, the innocence of the boy proves and Aling Marta realized her mistake.
VIII. SUMMARY THE STORY “ANG KALUPI” is about a usual yet unexpected encounter of a middle-aged house wife and an indigent boy. Aling Marta, the protagonist of the story, did a heavy and unforgivable indiscretion – judging the boy with his physical appearance, which led to something worse than she’d ever imagined. A woman chased a child in a major road until the child was strucked by a motor vechicle because the woman do not know that she forgot to bring her kalupi/wallet when buying to the market, she bumped with the child and when she cannot buy the food she thinked of the child that she bumped with and she chased it....
