Home Spelling Practice

Dear Family,

You can help your child succeed by spending time at home each week examining and writing the spelling words together. Make a game of spelling practice. Many simple games such as “Tic-Tac-Toe,” “I Spy,” and “Simon Says” can be adapted to include spelling words.

Spelling Connections Grade 2

Your child will use the Spelling Connections program this year. Each week, the lesson will focus on a Spelling Strategy that describes a common spelling rule or principle. The spelling words on the list for that week will illustrate the Spelling Strategy.

The Spelling Study Strategy is a method for studying any spelling word. Help your child make a habit of using it for spelling practice. Follow these steps: 1. Look at the word. 2. Say the letters in the word. Think about how each sound is spelled. 4. See the word in your mind. Spell the word to yourself. 5. Write the word. 6. Check your spelling against the spelling in the book. Your child will also grow as a speller by writing stories, diaries, signs, and letters at home. Encourage your son or daughter to write frequently while playing and exploring hobbies and during quiet times. Enjoy writing together! Sincerely,

What’s My Line? Play a game by having your child guess a spelling word from clues you give. The first clue should give the first letter of the word, and the second clue should be a rhyming word. For example, you might say, “This word starts with the same letter as your first name. It rhymes with hill.” Have your child say the word and then write it.

Anagrams Anagrams is played by making words from mixed-up letters. Make two cards for each of the vowels a, e, i, o, and u, as well as for the letters l, m, s, and t. Pronounce a spelling word and ask your child to spell the word using the letter cards. After your child has made each word with the cards, have him or her write the word and a sentence using that word on a separate sheet of paper.
