MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY COURSE SYLLABUS MS. CLAUDIA LOZANO Program Description Health Science Technology Education is a secondary career education program for students who have a desire and interest to explore and pursue a career in health care. HSTE is based on: • Essential knowledge and skills needed by health care providers • Individual needs of students and postsecondary education requirements • Leadership development, community service, and scholarship • Community resources and strong industry partnerships

Course Description Students in Medical Microbiology explore the microbial world, studying topics such as pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms, laboratory procedures, identifying microorganisms, drug resistant organisms, and emerging diseases.

Grading Grading will be based on BISD grading policy. A minimum of 3 major and 5 minor grades per Six Weeks

Retesting As per BISD policy, retesting must occur within 5 school days after student received failing grade. Retesting must be requested by the student and the student may raise their test score to a maximum of 70.

ATC Program The Advanced Technical Credit (ATC) Program is an advanced placement program for students interested in preparing for college and a technical career that requires postsecondary education. Any student who successfully completes statewide-articulated secondary courses such as this one is eligible to receive articulated credit from any participating public two-year college in the state that offers the corresponding college course. You are enrolled in an Advanced Technical Credit (ATC) course that will apply towards a college major as part of your high school graduation plan. As a result, this ATC course is a special version of a normal high school course that covers college-level material, and therefore carries a higher level credit towards your GPA and will be reflected on your high school transcript. This course will be noted on your high school transcript with a TP in the course abbreviation and will identify the high school course as an ATC course. This course may also be noted with the letter A- on your high school transcript to identify the high school course as an ATC course. Nevertheless, to qualify for college credit through the ATC Program, you must meet the following requirements upon completion of this course:  Complete this ATC course with a minimum grade of 80 (B or better).  (For Freshman and/or Sophomore Course) Note: Since this is a (Freshman) (Sophomore) ATC course, you must take additional ATC courses as a junior or senior to qualify for the college credit in this course. MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY LABORATORY SAFETY GUIDELINES AND CONTRACT Rules for a safe laboratory environment: A. Eating, drinking, the application of cosmetics are strictly prohibited in the laboratory. B. Open toed shoes are not permitted. C. All personal belongings (books, purses, and backpacks) must be kept away from the work surface. D. Tie back long hair. E. Keep hands away from the face at all times F. Gloves and goggles must be worn whenever students are working with microorganisms. G. If gloves become soiled, change immediately H. Always wash hands after removing gloves.. I. DO NOT put pencils or pens in the mouth while working with microorganisms. J. Cover and protect exposed wounds should be covered and protected. K. Laboratory coats or aprons should be worn at all times during laboratory investigations. L. Locate all fire extinguishers in the microbiology laboratory. M. Locate the eyewash station. If a sink is used as an eyewash station, always use cold water to flush the eyes. N. Disinfect the work space before and after each investigation. Use the 10% bleach solution for disinfectant. O. Handle all bacterial cultures with EXTREME CAUTION! P. Use a bulb and pipette, NEVER mouth pipette! Q. Notify the instructor immediately if a culture has been spilled. R. Place all materials in the appropriate containers upon completion of the laboratory investigation. S. Cultures must NEVER leave the laboratory workspace. T. If there is a fire drill, turn off all flames and electrical equipment, if possible, and exit in an orderly fashion (follow school procedures). Dear Parent/Guardian, Your son/daughter is presently enrolled in a semester course called Medical Microbiology. Students enrolled in this class will be using a variety of laboratory equipment and supplies, including bacterial cultures. The student must attend a safety demonstration and a written safety exam in order to participate in the laboratory investigations. Before your son/daughter may use any of the listed equipment, the attached contract must be signed and returned.
