OBJECTIVES   

Subtract 1 digit numbers with minuends through 18. Identify the minuend, subtrahend and difference in a subtraction sentence. Appreciate the importance of reading books.

II. SUBJECT MATTER 

Subtracting 1 – digit numbers with minuends through 18. Reference: K to 12 G pg. 1 & 2 Materials: Books, counters, numbers, pictures chart. Value: Gain pleasure in reading books

Presentation Present a story problem show a picture of girl holding a picture of apples. “This is Ana. She has 9 apples.” a. Who is the girl in the picture? b. What does she have?

Solving Problem in Difficult ways Solution 1. Role Play Call 2 girls to act out the situation. Then ask the class to count the number of apples left in Ana’s hand. Ana has 5 apples left. Solution 2. By drawing. Draw 9 apples and cross-out 4 by the pupils. Count the remaining apples. 2. Eric loves to read books in the library. He borrows 17 books in a week. He only reads 9 books. How many more books will he need?  Who loves to read books?  Do you love to read books too?  What kind of books did you read?  How many books did Eric borrow?  How many books did he read? Solution 1. By Groupings Group the pupils and let them answer the problem using counters.

Fixing Skills Let the pupils do worksheet 1 and 2. Generalization: To subtract one digit number with minuends through 18.   

Represent the given subtraction fact by drawing the same object. Take away the objects representing the subtrahend by crossing them out Count the object which are not crossed out. This is the answer which is called the difference.

IV. Evaluation Subtract the numbers inside the balloons.
