It‘s always an incentive when we, as an agency, can work with Estrel employees to develop and successfully realise concepts. What, for you, are the deciding factors in choosing to hold an event at the Estrel? The size and variety of options are certainly crucial. The all-round service on offer shows professionalism and saves time and money. The Estrel stands for reliable quality. What future projects are you planning at the Estrel? We will continue to hold large and small events here. In the near future, I‘d like to share the ”Schloss Britz“ apprentice project with my clients. It shows that ”thinking outside the box“ and having the courage to break the mould is worthwhile.

Flying high – there‘s no better description for the first half of the year for Berlin and the Estrel. The capital is booming and, despite the economic crisis and ash cloud, has recorded 15 months of constantly increasing visitor numbers an indication that Berlin is right at the top of the top ten hottest cities in the world. Whether you‘re a business traveller, event guest or tourist, all roads lead to this exhilarating metropolis. The Estrel Berlin can also look back positively on the first half of the year, as a lot has happened in Europe‘s lar-

gest convention, entertainment and hotel complex: our international restaurant ”Sanssouci“ and the cosy, rustic ”Estrel Stube“ have been gleaming like new for several weeks, over 1,000 rooms have been freshly renovated, and a lot has happened in the ”Estrel beer garden” too. Come and see it for yourself soon. The THW high rescue team and the Polish fire brigade also aimed high in the strictest sense of the word when they practiced evacuations on the outer facade of our building. And from an entertainment point of view, there were several more highlights in the Estrel this year: these included the Estrel‘s Beatles Days for hundreds of Beatles fans in July, when we celebrated the Fab Four’s 50th anniversary, and

the huge party to celebrate the 13th anniversary of ”Stars in Concert“, which took place in September with over 400 invited guests. But in this issue you won‘t just find a review of the past six months, but also a look ahead to the coming weeks – prospective treats include tempting Advent offers, glamorous New Year shows and numerous event highlights in the convention centre. Leading the way is the CHAMPIONS Gala 2010 in December, where Berlin‘s to sportspeople of the year will again be honoured amid much celebration.

Hoch hinaus Diese Retter trotzen der Höhenangst Fußgänger und Autofahrer auf der Sonnenallee kamen im Mai dieses Jahres aus dem Staunen kaum heraus, als sie in schwindelerregender Höhe an der Außenfassade des Estrel Berlin Rettungskräfte bemerkten, die sich gekonnt abseilten. Doch was nach einer nicht ganz undramatischen Rettungsaktion aussah, war lediglich eine Übung für den Notfall: Deutsche und polnische Höhenrettungsteams bauten in 60 Metern Höhe aus der obersten Etage des Estrel Hotels eine Schrägseilbahn und übten die Eva-

kuierung von Personen am Seil. Insgesamt waren 150 Teilnehmer im Estrel beim Abschluss-Seminar des EU-Projektes „Flutmanagement – Cross Border“ zu Gast. Der Landesverband Berlin, Brandenburg, Sachsen-Anhalt der Bundesanstalt Technisches Hilfswerk und die Staatliche Polnische Feuerwehr der an die Oder angrenzenden Wojeowdschaften, hatten seit 2007 im Rahmen des Projektes daran gearbeitet, die grenzüberschreitende Gefahrenabwehr bei Hochwasser noch effektiver zu gestalten.

Werte 2.0 Neues Veranstaltungsformat für die MICE-Branche

New event format for the MICE industry

Auf Initiative des Tagungs-Spezialisten intergerma, des Estrel Berlin sowie des Hotels The New Yorker fand im Juni erstmalig ein exklusives Event für Veranstaltungsplaner in Köln statt. Unter dem Motto „Werte 2.0“ organisierten die drei Partner ein neuartiges Veranstaltungsformat mit Workshops und Vorträgen für Firmenverantwortliche und Organisatoren von Meetings, Incentives, Congresses und Events (MICE). Dabei drehte sich alles um die Frage, ob das Web 2.0 die oft in Vergessenheit geratenen Werte überflüssig macht. Der Networking-Abend stand dann unter dem Motto „MICE meets Charity“: RTL- Wolfram Kons nahm stellvertretend für den RTL Spendenmarathon einen Scheck entgegen, dessen Summe sich aus den Anmeldegebühren sowie einer Estrel-Spende zusammensetzte. Aufgrund des positiven Teilnehmer-s denken die Organisatoren über eine Fortsetzung der Veranstaltung nach.

At the initiative of conference specialists intergerma, the Estrel Berlin and The New Yorker hotel, an exclusive event for event planners took place for the first time in Cologne in June. Under the slogan ”Values 2.0“, the three partners organised an innovative event format consisting of workshops and presentations for company executives and organisers of meetings, incentives, congresses and events (MICE). The event revolved around the question of whether web 2.0 makes often forgotten values redundant. There was then a networking evening under the slogan ”MICE meets Charity“. RTL presenter Wolfram Kons accepted a cheque on behalf of the RTL telethon for a sum raised from the event‘s registration fees and a donation from the Estrel. Thanks to positive from participants, the organisers are considering continuing the event.

Vor den Toren Berlins erstreckt sich die größte und schönste Rennbahn Deutschlands: Die Galopprennbahn Hoppegarten. Nach den Plänen des Investors Gerhard Schöningh wurde die Anlage mit Liebe zum Detail aufwändig renoviert und ist auf bestem Weg, wieder zur führenden Rennbahn Deutschlands zu werden. Am 11. September fand dort erstmals das „Estrel Hotel World Cup of Nations“ Fegentri-Rennen statt. Beim Cup der Nationen traten Frankreich, Deutschland, Großbritannien, Italien sowie die USA mit jeweils einem Jockey an. Darüber hinaus war das Team

As part of this project, the state association of Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief and the Polish state fire brigades of the voivodeships (provinces) bordering the Oder have been working since 2007 to make cross-border active flood defence more effective.

A stone‘s throw from the centre of Berlin is ‘s largest and most attractive racecourse at Hoppegarten. It has been lavishly restored in loving detail according to the plans of investor Gerhard Schöningh and is well on its way to becoming ‘s leading racecourse once again. On 11 September the Estrel Hotel World Cup of Nations ”Fegentri race” took place there for the first time. , , Great Britain, Italy and the USA were each represented with a jockey in the Cup of Nations. Team Europe also had two riders at the start. The Fegentri race in Hoppegarten was the only stop in on the race‘s worldwide tour. The world‘s jockey elite not only stayed at Hotel Estrel, they also went to the live show Stars in Concert on the evening of the race day.

Renovierungsarbeiten sind fast abgeschlossen

Estrel im neuen Design

Fast ist es geschafft – nur noch 100 der insgesamt 1.125 Zimmer warten auf ihre Renovierung, die für Dezember dieses Jahres geplant ist. Ende des Jahres sind dann alle Zimmer und Suiten sowie die öffentlichen Bereiche des Estrel Hotel komplett renoviert und stehen damit stellvertretend für die konsequente Weiterentwicklung des Estrel, welches seit 2001 die Spitze der umsatzstärksten deutschen Hotels anführt. Die Renovierung der Zimmer erfolgte in mehreren Etappen und dank der einzelnen Hotelflügel ohne jegliche Störung der Gäste, was natürlich oberste Priorität hatte. Dabei wurden die nicht mehr benötigten Hotelmöbel, wie gut erhaltene Sessel, Stühle und Tische, an wohltätige Berliner Einrichtungen gespendet und haben dort für große Freude gesorgt. Bei der Gestaltung der Zimmer und Suiten wurde großen Wert auf Design und Funktionalität gelegt: Helle Hölzer wurden mit dunkleren kombiniert; Stoffe und Bezüge sind in warmen Farben gehalten, große Schreibtische und moderne Flatscreens mit Anschlüssen für Laptop und MP3-Player gehören zum Standard. In den Juniorsuiten wurden zudem die Bäder komplett neu gestaltet und sehr exklusiv mit weiß changierenden Mosaiksteinen oder mokkabraunen Fliesen ausgestattet. Darüber hinaus wurden im ersten Halbjahr 2010 die Restaurants „Sanssouci“ und „Estrel Stube“ neu gestaltet; und auch außerhalb des Estrel sind die Bauarbeiten abgeschlossen: Im Rahmen des Projektes „Stadtumbau West“ wurde der Estrel-Biergarten um eine terrassenartige Anlage mit Bänken und Wasserspielen zur Sonnenallee hin vergrößert und von der Sonnenbrücke aus begehbar gemacht. Spätestens in der nächsten Saison werden die Gäste diese attraktive Oase direkt vor dem Hoteleingang am Neuköllner Schifffahrtskanal mit eigenem Schiffsanleger, Liegewiese, kulinarischen Köstlichkeiten vom Grill und spannenden Open Air Kino-Events genießen können.

Renovation work is almost complete We‘re almost there – just 100 of our 1,125 rooms are left to be renovated, which is planned for December of this year. By the end of the year, all of the Estrel hotel‘s rooms, suites and public areas will have been completely renovated and will be representative of the consistent development of the Estrel, which has been at the forefront of the most popular German hotels since 2001. Room renovations took place in several stages, and thanks to the hotel‘s individual wings, without any disruption for guests, which of course was the highest priority. Hotel furniture that was no longer required, such as good condition armchairs, chairs and tables, was donated to charitable Berlin organisations who were delighted to receive it. In the design of rooms and suites, high value was placed on style and functionality: light woods were combined with darker ones, fabrics and covers have been kept in warm colours, and large desks and modern flat screen televisions with laptop and MP3 player connections are now standard. The bath-rooms in junior suites have also been completely redesigned, and very exclusively decorated with iridescent white mosaic or mocha brown tiles. In addition, the restaurants ”Sanssouci“ and “Estrel

Stube“ were refitted in the first half of 2010. Building work has also been completed outside of the Estrel – as part of the ”west urban redevelopment“ project, the Estrel beer garden was expanded as far as Sonnenallee with a terrace-style area with benches and fountains, and made accessible from Sonnenbrücke. By next season, guests will be able to enjoy this attractive oasis right outside the hotel on the Neukölln shipping canal, with its own pier, sun loungers, culinary delicacies from the grill and exciting open-air cinema events.

Den Abschluss des Sportjahres 2010 bildet auch in diesem Jahr die Wahl der „Berliner Sportler des Jahres“, ein Event, das bereits zum siebten Mal im Estrel Convention Center stattfindet, und das zu einem der wichtigsten Ereignisse im Hauptstadtkalender avanciert ist. Neben der Siegerehrung der erfolgreichsten Spitzensportler, Trainer und Manager sowie Mannschaften führt ein durch das Gala-Programm. Musik- und Showacts, eine Band, ein Gala-Buffet und vor allem die Nähe zu den Sportstars machen diesen Abend zu einem ganz besonderen Ereignis.

13 Jahre „Stars in Concert“

Berlins Kultshow begeistert mit neuen Highlights im 14. Spieljahr – Show-Specials mit Elvis und Buddy Holly im Dezember und Januar Das verflixte 13. Jahr ist erfolgreich überstanden und „Stars in Concert“ befindet sich seit September im 14. Spieljahr! Zwar hat die Finanzkrise die EntertainmentBranche nicht verschont, jedoch kamen im letzten Jahr zu 279 Vorstellungen und 47 Galas – davon 21 außerhalb Berlins – über 140.000 Besucher: Ein Ergebnis, dass sich sehen lassen kann! Neben „Stars in Concert“ wurden für Firmenevents und Produktpräsentationen spezielle, auf Kundenwünsche zugeschnittene, Shows konzipiert und unter der Leitung des Künstlerischen Leiters, Paul Langley, inszeniert. In diesem Jahr wurden in der Presse vor allem das Beatles-Musical sowie die Estrel Beatles Days euphorisch gefeiert und auch „Elvis – Die Show“ erhielt großes Lob in den Medien. Neben den bewährten Produktionen – wie zum Beispiel ABBA, die Blues Brothers und Motown Records, die in den vergangenen Jahren entstanden – sind allein in diesem Jahr noch drei weitere hinzugekommen: Die Buddy Holly Show „That´ll be the day“, ein „Boney M.“-Special mit zahlreichen Disco-Hits sowie das „Dance Project“, eine mitreißende Tanzperformance zu den bekanntesten Chart-Erfolgen.

13 Years of “Stars in Concert” Berlin‘s cult show thrills with new highlights in its 14th season - show specials with “Elvis” and “Buddy Holly” in December and January We have successfully survived the 13-year-itch and from September “Stars in Concert” is in its 14th year! It is true that the entertainment sector has not been spared the financial crisis, but despite this we staged 279 performances and 47 galas, 21 of them were outside Berlin, with over 140,000 visitors: an impressive achievement! As well as “Stars in Concert” we have staged shows for company events and product presentations, specially designed to our clients‘ specifications and under the leadership of our artist director, Paul Langley. This year, the Beatles Musical and the Estrel Beatles Days have been received with particular euphoria by the media, and also “Elvis - The Show” received great media praise. As well as our established productions such as ABBA, the Blues Brothers and Motown Records, which were created in recent years, three further productions have been added this year alone: The Buddy Holly Show “That‘ll be the day”, a ”Boney M.” special with lots of disco hits and the “Dance Project” a thrilling dance performance to the top chart hits. Starting on November 26th, the show‘s motto will be “We wish you a merry Christmas”, and the artists will perform the most famous American Christmas songs at the Christmas Special of “Stars in Concert” to get everybody into the season‘s spirit. Alongside the Christmas Special, audiences will be able to enjoy the show “Elvis - Blue Christmas” on December 25th and 26th. Grahame Patrick, the world‘s best Elvis impersonator, will present all the best-loved hits of the King of Rock‘n‘Roll at this live show - from hip-shaking rock to sentimental soul and beautiful Christmas songs - this Elvis will do his best to get you into the right mood for the season of goodwill. In January, audiences can look forward

to the Buddy Holly Show “That‘ll be the Day” - a tribute to the much too short life of this legend of Rock‘n‘Roll. More than 30 hits will transport you back to the Fifties - including all-time-favourites like “Peggy Sue”, “Oh Boy”, and “Words of Love”.
