B. Motivation Strategy: Four Pics One Word Before we proceed to our lesson, I want you to see this map first. We already discussed a lot of Afro-Asian literary piece. Studying literature of different countries is like a magic airplane. We travel from one country to another discovering their culture and traditions through literary texts. What are those countries that we already studied?

Myanmar, Korea and Africa.

Now, I have here a map, as you can see all the countries that we’ve already disussed are plotted by marks. Today we will go to another country by studying a story. But before that we will play a game called FOUR PICS ONE 3

Very good. It is a Japanese folktale. So what is a folktale?

Folktale -is a traditional story that has been told for centuries before it was written down. -folk tales usually have simple plots.

In depth discussion of the story Now, we will discuss the Japanese folktale entitled “The Touch of Happiness”. Comprehension questions: 1. Why did Matsui feel very sad?

Matsui was sad because after all his hard work and patience his rice field and garden failed to produce crops.

Yes that’s correct. Matsui felt very sad because even if he is an industrious farmer , his rice field and his garden always failed to produce or to yield crops. He is also worried because it is their source of income or living.

2. What did he do to solve his problem? What does it say of him?

Excellent answer. Since Matusi cannot make a living out of his rice field and garden, he decided to go to another venture or business. He went to their godown or storehouse and he found few painting materials used by his grandfather. He painted pictures then he sold some of it. But he has so little painting skill so eventhough he had good ideas to paint he only painted simple pictures and he only sold three.

He decided to see what can be done in their godown. He found painting materials and he painted simple pictures . Then he sold it. His action reveals that he is very optimistic, patient and creative man. These shows that Matsui is a patient, industrious and optimistic.

This actions showed that Matsui has a positive attitude, he never give up although he has big problems. He is still very patient and willing to take risks.

3. Who do you think, was the stranger who visited Matsui? What did he tell Matsui?

Very good answer. One day Matsui was very busy painting pictures, when out of nowhere just like magic, a stranger appeared in front of him. The stranger is one of the Seven Gods of Happiness.

The stranger who visited Matsui is one of the Seven Gods of Happiness because he has suddenly appeared out of nowhere. The stranger told Matsui the following statements, “the Seven Gods of Happiness always leave their mark, but some men are not quick to see it. Because of your patience you shall see the Touch of Happiness they gave here, for they left no spot forgotten.”

Matsui told the stranger that it seems that the Gods forgot to bless his spot. But he is trying his best to see what can be done and he said that he will never give up hope. The statement of the stranger reveals 9

that the Gods had blessed all the people but some are not aware of it. But because Matsui is a patient man he will see the Touch of Happiness left by the Gods. 4. What mark did the Seven Gods of Happiness leave Matsui’s rice field?

The mark of the Seven Gods of Happiness in Matsui’s ruined rice field is the lovely iris flower.

Yes, that’s right. Aftre the stranger left, Matsui went to his ruined rice field and there he saw a beautiful blossom of the iris flower. He planted a lot of iris flower and after the next season it grew so well that it filled the whole rice field. The beautiful sight of the iris flowers were ired by the people in the town and some pilgrims or travellers were fascinated byMatsui’s flowers. These iris flowers were the mark or the blessing that is bestowed to Matsui by the Seven Gods of Happiness. 5. Why did the pilgrims buy Matsui’s paintings?

Very well said. The pilgrims were so attracted to the iris flowers. They are so happy to buy the paintings made by Matsui because they believed that Mastui’s iris flower plantation is the place where the Seven Gods of Happiness left their mark or bestowed their divine blessings.

Cause and Effect Relationship Before discussing the story, we will first note the cause and effect relationships in the story. What is a cause and effect relationship? Who wants to read?

The pilgrims or the travellers were delighted to see a field full of iris flowers. They bought Matsui’s paintings so that they can take it home. They also said that it is the mark of the Seven Gods of Happiness.

Cause is a reason for an action or a condition. Effect is a result when something is done or something happens. 10

Real happiness is achieved because of positive attitude and opitmistic way of thinking. Eventhough we are surrounded by a lot of negativities in life we must learn how to be happy and find happiness around us. Often times happiness is within our reach but we are not aware of it. Never give up and keep the faith and high hopes. Be patient because God has his plans for us.
