Work instructions for Gallenkamp Melting Point Apparatus 1. Purpose: The purpose of these work instructions is to ensure the proper use of Gallen kamp Melting Point Apparatus. This apparatus is designed for the determination of melting point of sample/Samples. 2. Responsibility: Senior Scientific Officer, Scientific Officer, Technician 3. Procedure:
Switch on at the electric supply. Display will read current temperature of the oven of the apparatus. Decide what temperature you want the instrument to reach; this should be about 20⁰C below the expected melting point when using the Gallenkamp melting point apparatus. Turn up the [VARIABLE HEAT] dial to begin heating. Take note of the rate of increase and current temperature as you may need to adjust the dial accordingly. The number scale is not representative of specific degree increases is simply a function of intensity i.e. the higher the number the faster the increase and also the higher maximum temperature. The [RAPID HEAT] switch can be used to help bring the oven up to temperature as it enables the block to heat up quicker. A small amount (1-5 mg) of sample should be put into a small closed-end capillary tube and gently tapped on the bench top until the sample reach at the bottom of the tube. When the display is reading at the required temperature insert the filled capillary tube(s) into the oven block and leave to equilibrate for 1 minute. Increase the temperature and control the rate of increase using the [VARIABLE HEAT] dial. Write down the temperature when the sample begins to melt and again when the melt is completed. Use the [HOLD DISPLAY] switch to hold the display but this will not stop and increases in temperature. After using the switch off the melting point apparatus.
