PRACTICAR Por cierto, como se de dice en ingles, preparado o listo? Ready. Ready. Right. And how do we say viejo? Old. Old. Ok, ahora, unas palabras muy familiares … como se dice, favorito? Favorite. Favorite. Y la palabra complicado? Como se dice eso en ingles? Complicated. Complicated. En ingles, como se dice, elector o votante? Voter. Voter. Yes, voter. Y el color negro? Como se dice negro en ingles? Black. Black. OK, el verbo, elegir … como se dice elegir en ingles? Choose. Choose. Ok, mas avanzado, como se dice, eligiendo? Choosing. Choosing. Muy bien. Y como se dice ha eligido? Have chosen. Have chosen. Ok, what is English for the expresión, “mejor que” ? Better than. Better than. Ok, better than, Ahora, el verbo “pensar” en ingles. Como se dice? Ok, entonces, como se dice, ellos piensen? They think. Yo pienso? I think. Tu piensas? You think. Wow, conjugación en ingles es muyyy facil, no? Now, let’s listen to the selection in English. Y no te preocupes si no puedas entender todo. Don’t worry. Lo sé, es un poco difícil, pero tenemos que ejercitar tu oído para ingles. Tranquilízate … Relax! Y entenderas mejor.

SELECCION DE HOY Is America ready for a Black president? Is America ready for a woman president? Is America ready for an old man president? Voters will decide those questions soon. In America, we have two big political groups. The democrats. And the republicans. Right now, the democrats are choosing their favorite candidate. And the republicans are choosing their favorite candidate. This is called the primary election. Later, in the final election, voters will choose either the top democrat or the top republican to be the next president. If you are not American, this process probably is complicated. In fact, many Americans think it is very complicated. Many people do not vote. But this year, the election is interesting. The democrats are choosing between a woman, Hillary Clinton, and a black man, Barack Obama. In America, we have never had a woman or a black man as president. The republicans have chosen John McCain as their candidate. He is 71 years old.

Tu Ingles Session Two I do not know who will win the final election in November. But I believe that Obama, or Clinton, or McCain, will be a better president than President Bush. ENTREVISTA Oye Cecile, tengo otra pregunta para ti … Yeah Brian, go on … En la selección acabamos de escuchar, yo dije la palabra “interesting.” Que significa “interesting”? Como se dice eso en español? Interesante Yes! Ok, entonces, es diferente que la palabra “interested,” no? Que signifca “interested”? Interesado. Right. Por ejemplo, el libro – the book – is interesting. Es diferente que decir, I am interested in the book. Estoy interesado en el libro. Por cierto, Cecile, cual es tu libro favorito en ingles? Do you have a favorite English book? Harry Potter? I enjoy reading Stephen King’s books, but I read his books translated to Spanish. So, I think it doesn’t count. I am not used to reading novels or short stories in English. I do read, and I read a lot of English articles or news on the Internet. Oh, and I have to be very honest … I don’t like Harry Potter! Ok, thank you again for your help Cecile! It was a pleasure Brian. See you soon! Por cierto, en el sesión anterior de Tu Ingles, Cecile ha dicho que ella intenta estar “surrounded by English.” Recuerdas? “Surrounded by English.” Sabes la palabra “surrounded”? Significa “rodeado.” En otras palabras, Cecile dice es muy importante estar rodeado de ingles. Estoy de acuerdo! THAT’S ENGLISH Now, it is time for “That’s English.” [music]

Yo sé que tu, querido oyente, eres una persona muy generosa que quiere hacer favores a todo el mundo. Claro que si! Pero, en ingles, sabes lo que deberías decir cuando alguien ha dado las gracias a ti por tu generosidad? En español, probablemente dices “de nada” o “no hay de que” o tal vez “a la orden.” Pero en ingles, usamos una expresión un poco extraño responder a alguien quien dice “gracias.” Lo sabes? In English, if someone says “Thank you” (gracias), we say “You are welcome.” Mas despacio … You are welcome. Or. You’re welcome! Literalmente, es igual de “estas bienvenido”. La palabra “welcome” significa “bienvenido.” Welcome to America! Or Welcome to my home! Pero en este contexto, cuando tu has recibido las gracias, es educado decir, “You’re welcome!” Es igual de, estas bienvenido recibir mi ayuda. O, fue un placer ayudarte. A veces, puedes decir, “You are VERY welcome” o “You are QUITE welcome!” A veces, en ingles la gente dice, “No problem” “No problem” o tal vez, “Sure” “Sure.” Usamos estas expresiones cuando hemos dado solo un pequeño detalle para alguien … por ejemplo, abrir una puerta. Estas expresiones son casi parecidas a “de nada” o “no hay de que.” Pero tengo que itir algo. La verdad, no me gusta “de nada.” En mi opinión. hay que ser cortez en recibir las gracias, no solo en dar ellas. Entonces, la proxima vez eres muy generoso, como es tu costumbre, y alguien te dice ¨Thank you!¨, contesta como la persona muy educada eres … con un sonrisa y las palabras, “You’re welcome!” That´s English!!

+++ Now, it is time for “English of the Rich and Famous.” En el anterior sesión de Tu Ingles, escuchamos a un discurso de un hombre quien era presidente hace muchos anos. El hombre tenia un fuerte acento de Boston. Do you know who the man was? La selección era tan avanzada … pero Susana en España contestó correctamente … The man was John F. Kennedy, JFK. Felicidades Susana! Kennedy estaba pronunciando un discurso en la inauguración de su presidencia. En el parte del discurso hemos escuchado, creo que Kennedy estaba hablando sobre Latino America y especialmente Cuba. Kennedy estaba muy preocupado sobre comunismo y la Union Sovietica. He was very worried about communism. Ok, ahora, escuchamos a una entrevista con Barack Obama. Fue hecho en dos mil y seis, después un gran manifestación en este país sobre inmigración. En el pasaje, Obama criticó la idea de deportación de los once millones de indocumentados actualmente en los estados unidos. Por cierto, Obama es del estado de Illinois, en el mediooeste de los estados unidos. En comparición que Boston, la gente de esta región no tiene un fuerte acento. Ok,, let’s listen now to Mr. Obama. El habla rápidamente – he talks fast -- pero, procura entender tantas palabras como puedas! “That kind of approach just isn't realistic. We're not going to deport 11 to 12 million people; many of them have been here for many years, many of them have strong roots, many of them have children who were born here and are therefore United States citizens. It's hard to imagine that we want to live in a country where we would have police and immigration officials coming into people's homes and taking away the father of a family, sending him back to Mexico, leaving a mother and child behind. This is going to be an emotional issue. It's not going to go away any time soon. But I think what we saw in those marches is the face of a new America. America is changing and we can't be threatened by it.” OK, Barack Obama, posiblemente el presidente próximo de los estados unidos. I hope you understood some of what he said.
