To my mother who always thought I was special and unique
There was a little boy named Jonathan. One so sweet who loved to sleep. Each evening before he rests his mommy would tell him a story. This is the one that is the best.
Once upon a time there was a little girl. Just an average little girl. Who wanted a special Halloween costume. She wanted to be a princess, a beauty queen or even a witch.
But this year, her mother had a different plan. Her mother told the little girl, “I have a great idea for your costume. It will be so different, so unique”.
Her mother grabbed an old dress, funny hair, black socks, ugly shoes, a bucket and a mop. The little girl said, “No Way! Everyone will laugh at me in that old dress, funny hair, black socks, ugly shoes, with a bucket and a mop.”
Her mother said “Oh, trust me, they will not.”
The next day was Halloween and the town’s Halloween party.
The Little girl not wanting to wear the old dress, funny hair, black socks, ugly shoes, holding a bucket and mop, went to the party.
At the party, the other children dressed as cowboys, princesses and pirates. The little girl so scared and ashamed in her old dress, funny hair, black socks, ugly shoes, with a bucket and mop stood alone without a laugh or a smile.
The Halloween costume contest was about to start. There was no way this little girl was going up on stage with all the other girls dressed as princesses and witches!
Her mother said, “Go ahead. You look great. No one will laugh at you”.
Slowly, the Little Girl went on stage with all the other children. Everyone in the audience looking at her. So afraid that they would laugh. Then she heard a man call her name. He told her to stand back off the stage.
That was it! Her costume with the old dress, funny hair, black socks, ugly shoes, holding a bucket and a mop was so terrible, they didn’t even want her on the stage!!
All the awards had been given out. One for the funniest costume, the scariest costume and even for the most silliest.
The only award left to give was for the best costume of them all.
When the little girl heard her name she was so surprised. She was surprised that her mother was right. Her costume with the old dress, funny hair, black socks, ugly shoes, holding a bucket and a mop WAS special and unique… and won Grand Prize!!!
When Jonathan’s mommy had finished the story, Jonathan was so happy for the little girl. His mommy said “I am so glad you are happy for the little girl, because the little girl was me.”
