A Message from our President and CEO
I
t’s hard to believe that it has been almost one year since I started as President and CEO of the Brandywine Health Foundation. Getting to know the critical role the Foundation plays in our community and meeting all of our partners has been quite a humbling experience. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and connect with many of our donors, community partners, municipal leaders and public officials, volunteers, and others who are all dedicated ers of the Coatesville community- people who are working together to the health and well-being of our community. The strength of our community reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Coretta Scott King “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the comionate actions of its .” I am looking forward to the Strawberry Festival and hopefully meeting all of you. I want to personally thank our host, Brandywine Hospital - Tower Health, and our presenting sponsors, KeyBank and PECO. I also want to thank the Strawberry Festival committee made up of dedicated volunteers, incredible sponsors, and all of our partners for helping to put together this enormous four-day community event. We are excited to bring you non-stop live music, delicious food, rides, games, shopping, fireworks, and more at the 2018 Strawberry Festival. We have lots of exciting things to see and do at the festival and hope this guide will be helpful in planning your visit. As you may know, the funds raised from the Strawberry Festival are donated to four incredible organizations serving our community: Coatesville Area Public Library, Coatesville Rotary Club, Coatesville Youth Initiative, and the Thorndale Volunteer Fire Company. Like the Brandywine Health Foundation, these organizations are helping to build a stronger, healthier, and more vibrant community. design, did not have a background in acting and she said that she’s not a natural performer, but it turned out that, with her abundant cheerfulness, she was very good at taking on the role of the Strawberry Lady. “I put on that costume and a different personality comes out,” she said with a laugh. “I light up and love walking around at the Strawberry Festival and talking to all the kids. It’s such a great family event. There are a lot of activities for children. It will keep the family busy all day long.” If being the Strawberry Lady isn’t enough, Holling also serves as a liaison to the 40 to 45 vendors and crafters who set up shop at the festival. “I help make sure that they have what they need,” she explained. “It’s a dual role, which I love.” In addition to her work with the festival, Holling volunteers at the Brandywine Health Foundation’s consignment shop, which sells furniture and clothing. During the course of the last 16 years, the consignment shop has generated more than $1 million for the Brandywine Health Foundation. Entertainment is a big part of the Strawberry Festival, and Greg Krajewski is instrumental in helping the Entertainment Committee to plan four days of entertainment—no easy feat. Krajewski, of Paragon Business Gifts Inc. and a resident of Honey Brook, has volunteered with the festival for more than 15 years. There are ten or more bands that will perform on the main stage throughout the event, and an equal number of singer-songwriters will perform acoustic sets at Strawberry Café Live. “It’s a challenge, but it’s enjoyable,” Krajewski said of planning the entertainment for the festival. “We will have a good variety of music.” Krajewski even performs during the Strawberry Festival—he is a member of the 74/75 Band, which is named after the year in which several group graduated high school. They play mostly cover songs during their performances. Krajewski is a member of the Coatesville Rotary Club, which is a beneficiary of the Strawberry Festival. The Rotary takes the money that it receives from the Brandywine

“
Health Foundation and puts it right back into the Coatesville community through a number of different programs and activities. “It helps the community as a whole,” Krajewski said. “There are so many people involved to make this happen. It’s an amazing number of people who are helping out the community.” Another one of the longtime and dedicated volunteers is Bud Adams. Adams was a Coatesville Rotary Club member the first time that he got involved with the Strawberry Festival more than 30 years ago. “They asked the Coatesville Rotary to help out,” he said, explaining that the Rotary would sell hot dogs and hamburgers. Adams was in the wholesale food business in the area for 32 years. He would allow the Strawberry Festival to make use of his refrigerated trucks to store food. He would also pick up the tents, chairs, and tables for the festival. “I always enjoyed doing it,” Adams explained. Like a lot of the other volunteers at the Strawberry Festival, Adams thought it was important to give back to the community. Without the hard work of volunteers like Adams, Collins, Krajewski, Holling, and Scott, it wouldn’t be possible to plan and stage the Strawberry Festival. The Strawberry Festival Committee meets regularly throughout the year to work on the event, and the committee chairperson said that they are all appreciative of everyone who gives their time and talents to make it a success. “We appreciate the help of the volunteers throughout the whole year,” Collins said. The volunteers all say that they are proud to be ing the work of the Brandywine Health Foundation, which has a positive impact in the community. “What they have done for the community is just outstanding,” Holling said of the Brandywine Health Foundation. Tim Vitullo 9:00 – 11:00 pm Tim Vitullo is a bit different. An accomplished singer, guitarist, & songwriter, Vitullo decided to return home to both Pittsburgh & his blues influences to record Josephine & Assorted Train Songs, his debut studio LP. His songs combine to create a portrait of “contemporary Americana blues” music that borrows as much from Vitullo’s jazz, jam band, & country influences as it does the American blues tradition.

They performed in wedding bands, as well as dance bands that toured across the country. They brought their love of music with them to America and have been entertaining crowds ever since! Briz and The Revival Band 7:00 – 9:00 pm Briz and The Revival is an energetic r&b/soul band. With a ionate vocalist and dynamic rhythm section they charm and capture every audience with their sound. Through our initiatives and vision, the Brandywine Health Foundation is helping the Coatesville area toward a future of healthy living, and its inaugural Culture of Health Community Forum in March helped galvanize that mission.
Cultivating a Culture of Health By Richard L. Gaw Staff Writer
Sixteen years ago, the Brandywine Health Foundation launched its grant making to advance the health of the population in the greater Coatesville area, regardless of their race, income, gender, age, disability or background. To this day, its guiding principles of “Stewardship, Equity, Wellness, Collaboration, and Leadership” remain the focus of more than $16.5 million of investments in local non-profit organizations that help people live healthier lives, and there is still much more work to be done. As President and CEO for the Brandywine Health Foundation, Vanessa Briggs’ personal ion to help those in greatest need is tightly linked with the Foundation’s core value to treat everyone as an equal, regardless of their socioeconomic status or walk in life. “The Foundation is seen as an influential voice and an advocate for health equity” Briggs said. “We may have resources to address these complex issues, but we can’t do it alone. Our voice, along with others’, gives us the opportunity to convene individuals from various fields that equally share the desire to create a healthy thriving community.” If one could associate words with the greater Coatesville
community, they would likely be Pride, Challenge and Opportunity. Working with the community it serves, the Brandywine Health Foundation incorporates the words “Inclusion” and “Action” as part of its groundwork to create a more holistic view of solving deep-seeded community health problems. “Working in the shadow of these realities is hard work,” Briggs said, “but it’s achieved through strategy and focused longterm investment. Part of the challenge we have is stimulating broader and deeper social change and clarifying the level and type of change needed to improve community health. “This requires knitting health, social and economic sectors together in order to address why certain groups of people in our community still suffer from poorer health outcomes. The Foundation works with its old and new partners in looking at what prevents communities in achieving better health. If we dismantle the barriers to the system, improve living conditions, environments and neighborhoods, we can begin to see health disparities decline.” Brandywine Health Foundation has been working with the greater Coatesville community to tackle the region’s most pressing health problems with real solutions. In the coming decade, the Foundation will strategically build upon its successes, in order to positively impact the nine municipalities in the Coatesville Area School District. The Brandywine Health Foundation’s inaugural Culture of Health Community Forum, held March 16 at Gateway Church, helped galvanize the Foundation’s mission and expand its view and connect with leaders of local non-profit, for-profit, government, philanthropy and faith-based institutions. Throughout the Forum, there was a shared belief that the time is right for a new, across-the-board approach to building a healthier community. In his keynote address at the Forum, Dr. Giridhar Mallya, Senior Policy Officer at the Robert Wood Johnson

V The Forum featured brainstorming sessions that targeted potential solutions to create a healthier Coatesville community.
Foundation, emphasized that creating a “Culture of Health” is best achieved through changing mindsets and expectations; engaging in civic activities that promote healthy choices; and cultivating social connections that serve as lifelines of . Mallya introduced the Culture of Health framework’s four action areas that include Making Health a Shared Value; Fostering Cross-Sector Collaboration to Improve Well-Being; Creating Healthier, More Equitable Communities; and Strengthening the Integration of Health Services and Systems, in order to create an outcome that improves the health, well-being and health equity of the entire population. The inaugural Culture of Health Community Forum served as the launch of what will become a continuing series of health forums in the greater Coatesville area. These forums will educate and engage the community in conversations on factors that impede one’s ability in making health an easy daily choice for our residents. The community will have the opportunity to become architects of ideas to improve the health of greater Coatesville, not just recipients. “I’ve heard from many of those in attendance that there was a

sense of focus re-energizing everyone’s individual and collective disciplines to work strategically together and establish health as a shared value, only until then we can begin to move the health needle in Coatesville in a positive direction,” Briggs said. Similar to other health foundations across the nation, the Brandywine Health Foundation is looking more expansively and ambitiously at what they can and should do to improve the health of people they serve. “Improving health outcomes is not just about making sure a person can go to a doctor,” Briggs said. “It’s about disrupting our thinking, taking into consideration neighborhood conditions, community inclusion, and the impact of political and social power on our communities’ health status and life expectancy. A Few Simple Tips The Strawberry Festival is a rain or shine event. In severe weather some events may be canceled or rescheduled. Updates, when possible, will be made to the website. ission ission to the festival is free! Rides, games, food, etc. are pay as you go (prices vary). All net proceeds from the Strawberry Festival are donated to the greater Coatesville community for programs that Health Equity, Healthy Youth, and a Healthy Community. Please note, we will have ATM’s on site for easy cash accessibility. There is a $4 fee* to use the ATM’s at the festival. *A portion of the fee is donated to the Brandywine Health Foundation. Pets We love animals too, but… leave your pets at home. For the safety of your pet and others, pets are not allowed on the grounds of the Strawberry Festival. Parking and Shuttles There is ample parking adjacent to the festival with one lot located off of Reeceville Road across from the main entrance and the other lot off of Fisherville Road with a FREE two minute shuttle to the festival entrance. Parking in either lot is $2. We strongly encourage folks to avoid the traffic and ride the FREE Strawberry Festival shuttle. Offered on Friday and Saturday nights from 5-11 pm from the Kmart in Thorndale. Please note: There will be no festival parking allowed at CVS or Wawa. Please do not use this as a drop-off and/or pick-up location. Lost Children We encourage families to write your cell phone number on your child’s arm in sharpie (permanent marker), so that you can be ed in case you get separated. A Message from our President and CEO
I
t’s hard to believe that it has been almost one year since I started as President and CEO of the Brandywine Health Foundation. Getting to know the critical role the Foundation plays in our community and meeting all of our partners has been quite a humbling experience. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and connect with many of our donors, community partners, municipal leaders and public officials, volunteers, and others who are all dedicated ers of the Coatesville community- people who are working together to the health and well-being of our community. The strength of our community reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Coretta Scott King “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the comionate actions of its .” I am looking forward to the Strawberry Festival and hopefully meeting all of you. I want to personally thank our host, Brandywine Hospital - Tower Health, and our presenting sponsors, KeyBank and PECO. I also want to thank the Strawberry Festival committee made up of dedicated volunteers, incredible sponsors, and all of our partners for helping to put together this enormous four-day community event. design, did not have a background in acting and she said that she’s not a natural performer, but it turned out that, with her abundant cheerfulness, she was very good at taking on the role of the Strawberry Lady. “I put on that costume and a different personality comes out,” she said with a laugh. “I light up and love walking around at the Strawberry Festival and talking to all the kids. It’s such a great family event. There are a lot of activities for children. It will keep the family busy all day long.” If being the Strawberry Lady isn’t enough, Holling also serves as a liaison to the 40 to 45 vendors and crafters who set up shop at the festival. “I help make sure that they have what they need,” she explained. “It’s a dual role, which I love.” In addition to her work with the festival, Holling volunteers at the Brandywine Health Foundation’s consignment shop, which sells furniture and clothing. During the course of the last 16 years, the consignment shop has generated more than $1 million for the Brandywine Health Foundation. Entertainment is a big part of the Strawberry Festival, and Greg Krajewski is instrumental in helping the Entertainment Committee to plan four days of entertainment—no easy feat. Krajewski, of Paragon Business Gifts Inc. and a resident of Honey Brook, has volunteered with the festival for more than 15 years. There are ten or more bands that will perform on the main stage throughout the event, and an equal number of singer-songwriters will perform acoustic sets at Strawberry Café Live. “It’s a challenge, but it’s enjoyable,” Krajewski said of planning the entertainment for the festival. “We will have a good variety of music.” Krajewski even performs during the Strawberry Festival—he is a member of the 74/75 Band, which is named after the year in which several group graduated high school. They play mostly cover songs during their performances. Krajewski is a member of the Coatesville Rotary Club, which is a beneficiary of the Strawberry Festival. The Rotary takes the money that it receives from the Brandywine

Health Foundation and puts it right back into the Coatesville community through a number of different programs and activities. “It helps the community as a whole,” Krajewski said. “There are so many people involved to make this happen. It’s an amazing number of people who are helping out the community.” Another one of the longtime and dedicated volunteers is Bud Adams. Adams was a Coatesville Rotary Club member the first time that he got involved with the Strawberry Festival more than 30 years ago. “They asked the Coatesville Rotary to help out,” he said, explaining that the Rotary would sell hot dogs and hamburgers. Adams was in the wholesale food business in the area for 32 years. He would allow the Strawberry Festival to make use of his refrigerated trucks to store food. He would also pick up the tents, chairs, and tables for the festival. “I always enjoyed doing it,” Adams explained. Like a lot of the other volunteers at the Strawberry Festival, Adams thought it was important to give back to the community. Without the hard work of volunteers like Adams, Collins, Krajewski, Holling, and Scott, it wouldn’t be possible to plan and stage the Strawberry Festival. The Strawberry Festival Committee meets regularly throughout the year to work on the event, and the committee chairperson said that they are all appreciative of everyone who gives their time and talents to make it a success. “We appreciate the help of the volunteers throughout the whole year,” Collins said. The volunteers all say that they are proud to be ing the work of the Brandywine Health Foundation, which has a positive impact in the community. “What they have done for the community is just outstanding,” Holling said of the Brandywine Health Foundation. SATURDAY, JUNE 2ND The Vamp Head Jazz Quintet - 12:00 – 2:00 pm Greg Leinweber and Rick Covatta began working together as a jazz duo of guitar and bass. Since then they have added three of their friends Mark Ross on tenor saxophone Chris Erwin on trumpet and Dean Gorfti on drums. Drawing from their many years of experience as of big bands, brass ensembles, blues, metal, and rock bands as well as other jazz combos, an interesting mix of classic jazz standards by artists such as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Sonny Rollins along with some originals. Angela Evans Duo - 2:00 – 4:00 pm Mark is a seasoned guitarist having played in a variety of bands.
Angela is a self taught vocalist with a ion for singing. Together they bring an acoustic sound to familiar songs while giving it their own style. Trevon Raines - 4:00 – 6:00 pm Trevon Raines has been charming audiences in the Mid-Atlantic area for years. Singing at festivals, wineries, baseball stadiums, and restaurants, she draws you in with her emotional style. Paul Colombo - 6:00 - 8:00 pm Paul Colombo is a Chester County musician who has performed and recorded with Grammy winners. He has been touted for his “virtuoso guitar playing” by the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal. With a soulful voice and pop/rock songs influenced by Todd Rundgren, Eric Carmen, and Hall and Oates. ANKER - 8:00 – 10:00 pm Anker is a performing songwriter. Anker also co-wrote & produced a children’s yoga CD with Karuna Lynne Elson for her feline yoga puppet, “Swami Cat”. Through our initiatives and vision, the Brandywine Health Foundation is helping the Coatesville area toward a future of healthy living, and its inaugural Culture of Health Community Forum in March helped galvanize that mission.
Cultivating a Culture of Health By Richard L. Gaw Staff Writer
Sixteen years ago, the Brandywine Health Foundation launched its grant making to advance the health of the population in the greater Coatesville area, regardless of their race, income, gender, age, disability or background. To this day, its guiding principles of “Stewardship, Equity, Wellness, Collaboration, and Leadership” remain the focus of more than $16.5 million of investments in local non-profit organizations that help people live healthier lives, and there is still much more work to be done. As President and CEO for the Brandywine Health Foundation, Vanessa Briggs’ personal ion to help those in greatest need is tightly linked with the Foundation’s core value to treat everyone as an equal, regardless of their socioeconomic status or walk in life. “The Foundation is seen as an influential voice and an advocate for health equity” Briggs said. “We may have resources to address these complex issues, but we can’t do it alone. Our voice, along with others’, gives us the opportunity to convene individuals from various fields that equally share the desire to create a healthy thriving community.” If one could associate words with the greater Coatesville
community, they would likely be Pride, Challenge and Opportunity. Working with the community it serves, the Brandywine Health Foundation incorporates the words “Inclusion” and “Action” as part of its groundwork to create a more holistic view of solving deep-seeded community health problems. “Working in the shadow of these realities is hard work,” Briggs said, “but it’s achieved through strategy and focused longterm investment. Part of the challenge we have is stimulating broader and deeper social change and clarifying the level and type of change needed to improve community health. “This requires knitting health, social and economic sectors together in order to address why certain groups of people in our community still suffer from poorer health outcomes. The Foundation works with its old and new partners in looking at what prevents communities in achieving better health. If we dismantle the barriers to the system, improve living conditions, environments and neighborhoods, we can begin to see health disparities decline.” Brandywine Health Foundation has been working with the greater Coatesville community to tackle the region’s most pressing health problems with real solutions. In the coming decade, the Foundation will strategically build upon its successes, in order to positively impact the nine municipalities in the Coatesville Area School District. The Brandywine Health Foundation’s inaugural Culture of Health Community Forum, held March 16 at Gateway Church, helped galvanize the Foundation’s mission and expand its view and connect with leaders of local non-profit, for-profit, government, philanthropy and faith-based institutions. Throughout the Forum, there was a shared belief that the time is right for a new, across-the-board approach to building a healthier community. In his keynote address at the Forum, Dr. Giridhar Mallya, Senior Policy Officer at the Robert Wood Johnson

Foundation, emphasized that creating a “Culture of Health” is best achieved through changing mindsets and expectations; engaging in civic activities that promote healthy choices; and cultivating social connections that serve as lifelines of . Mallya introduced the Culture of Health framework’s four action areas that include Making Health a Shared Value; Fostering Cross-Sector Collaboration to Improve Well-Being; Creating Healthier, More Equitable Communities; and Strengthening the Integration of Health Services and Systems, in order to create an outcome that improves the health, well-being and health equity of the entire population. The inaugural Culture of Health Community Forum served as the launch of what will become a continuing series of health forums in the greater Coatesville area. These forums will educate and engage the community in conversations on factors that impede one’s ability in making health an easy daily choice for our residents. The community will have the opportunity to become architects of ideas to improve the health of greater Coatesville, not just recipients. “I’ve heard from many of those in attendance that there was a

sense of focus re-energizing everyone’s individual and collective disciplines to work strategically together and establish health as a shared value, only until then we can begin to move the health needle in Coatesville in a positive direction,” Briggs said. Similar to other health foundations across the nation, the Brandywine Health Foundation is looking more expansively and ambitiously at what they can and should do to improve the health of people they serve. “Improving health outcomes is not just about making sure a person can go to a doctor,” Briggs said. “It’s about disrupting our thinking, taking into consideration neighborhood conditions, community inclusion, and the impact of political and social power on our communities’ health status and life expectancy. A Few Simple Tips The Strawberry Festival is a rain or shine event. In severe weather some events may be canceled or rescheduled. Updates, when possible, will be made to the website. ission ission to the festival is free! Rides, games, food, etc. are pay as you go (prices vary). All net proceeds from the Strawberry Festival are donated to the greater Coatesville community for programs that Health Equity, Healthy Youth, and a Healthy Community. Please note, we will have ATM’s on site for easy cash accessibility. There is a $4 fee* to use the ATM’s at the festival. *A portion of the fee is donated to the Brandywine Health Foundation. Pets We love animals too, but… leave your pets at home. For the safety of your pet and others, pets are not allowed on the grounds of the Strawberry Festival. Parking and Shuttles There is ample parking adjacent to the festival with one lot located off of Reeceville Road across from the main entrance and the other lot off of Fisherville Road with a FREE two minute shuttle to the festival entrance. Parking in either lot is $2. We strongly encourage folks to avoid the traffic and ride the FREE Strawberry Festival shuttle. Offered on Friday and Saturday nights from 5-11 pm from the Kmart in Thorndale. Please note: There will be no festival parking allowed at CVS or Wawa. Please do not use this as a drop-off and/or pick-up location. Lost Children We encourage families to write your cell phone number on your child’s arm in sharpie (permanent marker), so that you can be ed in case you get separated. All lost children should report to the gazebo, so they can safely await the arrival of their parents. Smoking Please note, Brandywine Hospital - Tower Health is a no smoking zone.
