What is calibration?

Who is a dealer? A person who deals in weights / measurements – who sells weights. A person who imports such weights / measures, is also a dealer. He has to be ed. Interstate trade of weights / measures is also regulated. 5 DECEMBER 09

A person / firm who makes / assembles / puts weights and measures.

What are standards ... Reference standards – sec. 2(t)- made by central government – so that these standards are enforceable secondary standards – made by state govt. / central govt. For verification of working standards (sec. 2(x) stamp: means weights are certified as per standards. 5 DECEMBER 09

Important provisions Sec. 20,21 mention that only standard weights and measures must be used. Sec. 22 says that only standard weights be manufactured and sec. 23 says that only standard weigts should be put on weights – and as per govt. Rules. No person can deal in non-standard weights. Govt. Keeps reference / secondary standards in different places for verification (Sec. 24,25). 5 DECEMBER 09

Legal requirements All the packaged commodities must contain detailes of weights / measures in standard format along with the detials like manufacturer, date of packing etc. There should be declaration which can identify the measurement of the commodity, its units, and its packaging. Petrol for example is in liters, but Ghee is in KG - this is as per rules. 5 DECEMBER 09

Other rules...
There are detailed rules regarding weights and measures, which have to be enforced. Penalties are also prescribed for failure to follow the law. Penalties upto Rs. 5000 / imprisonment upto 2 years are prescribed under the law. 5 DECEMBER 09
