RULES! Objective: Scrabble-Dash! is the combination of two great games, Scrabble and Balderdash. In this variation of traditional Scrabble players much create imaginary words following standard word syntax and announce a definition that sounds like the word they have created. All players vote on the acceptability of a word. Majority Rules. Gameplay: Place all letters in a pouch or face down inside the game lid and mix them up. Each player draws seven tiles and places them in their racks. The first player combines three of more of his or her letters to form an imaginary word, and places the word on the board to read either across or down with one letter on the center square. As the word is placed the player must pronounce the word and give it a definition that is approved by the other players. The following player must build a word by connecting his letter to the one just created. Play continues until all the tiles are gone. Winner is the player with the most points at the end of the game. Scoring: Scoring is the same as regular scrabble with a few differences. There is no bonus for using all seven tiles, however, there is a 50 point bonus for forming a word of 10 letters or more and a 75 point bonus for making a word that extends the height or length of the enter game board. Point Bonus: You can also get a 10 point bonus for improving a definition. After a player has laid his tiles and announced the definition and before another player starts his turn, you can challenge with an improved definition. If the majority agrees that your definition is better than you receive a 10 point bonus and the definition is changed. There is no point penalty for the player who originally formed the word. Challenge: A player may challenge the word if the word syntax is incorrect or if the player is unable to pronounce or define the word. In this case the player must remove his word and play a different one or correct the letter syntax. If you think the word played is a real word that appears in the dictionary then you may also challenge. Consult a dictionary; if the word or a form there of is listed in the dictionary then the player must remove that word from the board and lose his or her turn. Winning The Game: When all tiles have been played scores are totaled. The player with the most points win the game! But everyone's racing against you to get their word down first so move fast!" Components: This game is entirely card-based, consisting of 38 vowel cards, 48 consonant cards, and 19 "Dash" cards. Each player has a hand of 7 letter cards - initially 5 consonants and 2 vowels, but as the game progresses players can refill their hands freely from the separate vowel and consonant decks to vary the mix. On each turn, the top Dash card is turned face up, revealing the goal for that turn. Players then race to play a word from their hands to fulfil the Dash card, or skip the turn to discard cards and draw new ones. The Dash cards include criteria such as number of letters (ranging from 2 to 4), specific parts of speech (verb/proper noun), or specifying that the word has to start, end with, or contain a particular letter, drawn at random from either the vowel or consonant deck (players do not need to play their own copy of this letter from their hand). The first player to lay down a valid word claims the Dash card, and the first player to collect 5 Dash cards wins the game. Overview of Gameplay Scrabble DASH is a card game for 2-4 players. The deck is separated into 86 letter cards and 19 ‘Dash’ cards. Each player is dealt 2 vowels and five consonants. The first player then turns over a ‘Dash’ card. These will contain various conditions like ‘4 letter word’, ‘Starts with…’, ‘Verb’ or even ‘Proper noun’ (I can hear the Scrabble players out there groaning). Players then attempt to form a word using the letters in their hand to meet the condition of the DASH card. The first player to place a complete word on the table to meet this condition wins the round. The winning player draws back up to 7 cards and a new round begins. Players may choose to exchange their cards for different cards from the draw deck. If they take this action then they do not take part in the round. The player who wins 5 rounds is declared the winner. That’s it. A round will take, on average, about 3 seconds. A Few Thoughts I played this game through several times with my parents, both of whom are Scrabble nuts, and they were not impressed. “There’s not enough thought to the game”, complained Dad. “I just wish there was more to do on my turn”, implored Mum. “I had the words there, but I just couldn’t get my cards down quickly enough”, groaned my wife. I think they summarized the complaints that I have about the game. There is no substance to the game, there are no meaningful decisions, and it all comes down to who can get their cards down on the table first. The rules even state that the cards you throw down don’t even have to be in order, they just have to make a word that meets the conditions of the DASH card. So, for a 3 letter word you could potentially throw down 3 random cards, and chances are you will have a word. I certainly didn’t buy this game for $5 at my local Kmart thinking that I would find a masterpiece. I bought it solely because my daughter is close to school age and those letter cards will be really useful as a tool to assist with her letter recognition and word formation. So, while I didn’t find a game worthy of the 5 minutes it takes to play, I did find an adequate educational resource. And let’s face it, for 5 bucks, what more could you expect?
