Jayce wants to learn how to swim like his friends can, but he is scared, as he has not been to a swimming pool before. He has brought a new pair of swimming trunks and a new pair of goggles for his first lesson.

“It will be okay, just try your best and have fun” says Jayce’s mother as they get ready to go to his first ever lesson.

When he gets to the pool his teacher greets him with a smile. Her name is Cheryl. “Hi Jayce! Lovely to meet you.” she beams.

Jayce is a little worried because he does not know what to expect. But Cheryl reassures him “do not worry Jayce, we can do everything together. Just take your time and try your best.” This made Jayce feel a bit better and he held Cheryl’s hand as he walked down the steps into the pool.

The first thing the children learn is how to blow bubbles in the water. Cheryl tells the children that the best way to blow bubbles is to imagine you are blowing out the candles on your birthday cake. You take a deep breath in above the water and then blow out the candles inside the water.

Cheryl then shows the children her toy dolphin David, who also shows the children how to blow bubbles. Cheryl asks the children to copy her and David. Jayce tries his best to blow bubbles in the water.

“Good job Jayce!” Says Cheryl. She is very happy that Jayce is trying his best!

Cheryl then says to the children that they are going to learn to float on their backs.

“Now, let’s meet Mr Starfish! He is going to show you how to do a star float. Look! He puts the back of his head back into the water and pushes his tummy up and looks up to the ceiling! He then counts to five. 1…2…3…4…5!”

Jayce let Cheryl hold his head and he pushes his tummy up and looks up to the ceiling and counts to five. His face did not even need to get wet! He held the star float for the five seconds!

“Good job Jayce! You are so clever!” Says Cheryl.

Jayce felt really proud of his star float. He felt like he had tried really hard. He gave his mum a smile from the pool. She smiled and gave Jayce a thumbs up.

Then Jayce watched as the teacher introduced a new toy, Toby the frog, who had long legs and long arms. Toby showed Jayce and the other children how to kick up and down and keep his toes pointy.

Then Jayce had a go and with a little help from Cheryl he was splashing his feet in no time! They then all sang a song “Kick, Kick, Kick! Splash, Splash, Splash! Kick, Kick, Kick! Splash, Splash, Splash! Now blow some bubbles.” Jayce ed how to blow bubbles too, like he had been taught by David the dolphin!

Jayce was soon kicking his legs and putting his face in the water and blowing bubbles! Cheryl was very happy with how brave Jayce had become!

Jayce realised that the more he tried to do his best, the easier swimming became! It was not as scary as he had once thought! He was really starting to enjoy his swimming class!

It then came to the end of the swimming lesson and Jayce was surprised at how quickly it had gone! He had had such a great time in the lesson and felt he had learnt a lot and tried his best.

Cheryl then made an announcement. She said at the end of each lesson she gives a special trophy to the child who has tried the hardest. Today she said she was giving the trophy to someone who has been very brave.

“Today’s trophy goes to someone who tried their very best and who was very brave! They did not give up and I cannot wait to see what they come back and do next week! And that person is….Jayce!”

All the other children clapped and told Jayce how brave he was and that he really deserved the trophy. “Good job Jayce” said everyone together.

Jayce was so pleased he had tried his best and that it had paid off! He had learnt some new swimming techniques and had had a lot of fun!

Jayce was very happy with his trophy and told his mum he was proud that he worked hard in his swimming lesson. He could not wait to go back next week!

Jayce then looked at his mum and said “even though I was scared, I tried my best and the teacher was so happy with me.” Jayce’s mum looked at him and replied “all you can do is try your best and you will get there! I am very proud of you!”

Jayce then knew that he should not be worried about the water anymore because his teacher Cheryl would be there to help if he needed it. He knew that if he took his time and tried his best, he would be swimming in no time!

He was now looking forward to his next swimming lesson and his next swimming adventure!
