PHILIPPINE HOSPITAL INFECTION CONTROL SOCIETY (PHICS), INC. GUIDELINES FOR BASIC COURSE IN HOSPITAL INFECTION CONTROL (Revised October 2005) GENERALITIES: 1.

The “Basic Course in Hospital Infection Control” of the Philippine Hospital Society (PHICS), Inc. is a course created by the Society with the objective of disseminating the fundamental concepts in infection control throughout the country.

The program of “Basic Course in Hospital Infection Control” is a 2-day course offered and delivered as formal lectures, interactive discussions and practical work. All handouts and other materials for the program will be provided by the Society. The preferred days have always been either Thursday & Friday or Friday & Saturday.

Any institution or hospital can write to the Society and request this program to be conducted in their area.

The activity is open to all interested infection control practitioners, to include physicians, nurses, medical technologists, pharmacists, microbiologists, dietitians, engineering staff, housekeeping staff, hospital s and midwives. Depending on the host institution and the venue, the average number of participants is 60-80 people.

Starting November 2005, host institutions within Metro Manila will be charged PhP 20,000.00 for the 2-day course. A fee of PhP 30,000.00 will be charged to host institutions outside Metro Manila. Host institutions will be exempted from paying the fee if the course is initiated or offered by PHICS.

MECHANICS: 1. The host institution should inform the Chief of Clinics or Head of the hospital regarding the idea of conducting a Basic Course in Hospital Infection Control. 2. Set the date of activity at least 1-2 months ahead of time. This will provide ample time to arrange with the speakers and prepare all the materials needed for the course. 3. Select a venue, preferably within the hospital which can house 60-80 participants with maximum of 100. The bigger the venue, the better. The venue should have a wide screen, overhead projector with reserve bulb, slide projector with carousel and reserve bulb, good sound system with recorder, extension cords with several outlets that will allow 3 machines operating all at the same time, a well-ventilated or well air-conditioned room, and chairs for participants. (if possible the set-up is “school type”, with tables and chairs). The venue should allow for conducting practicum for both wards and laboratory area. If the chosen venue is outside the hospital, the host institution’s organizing committee should look for

means to transport the participants to and from the hospital and the conference venue for the practicum. 4. Once plans are finalized, a written request should be made and addressed either to the PHICS Secretariat or the CME Chair. Only written request will be entertained on a “first come-first served basis.” 5. Though the course can be given exclusively to a particular hospital, the host institution can invite participants from other hospitals in the area. It must be emphasized that this course is really intended for dissemination to a wider audience of interested and dedicated healthcare practitioners from both private and government hospitals. The preferred audience must include ICC , or people who plan to put up an ICC or interested to become an ICC staff, s, doctors, nurses, medical technologists, housekeeping, pharmacists and dietary staff. The host institution can charge registration fee to invited participants. 6. The invitation will be done by the host institution’s Organizing Committee in order to “police” the number of participants. The audience should be limited to a maximum of 100, unless the staff of the host hospital can handle more than 100 participants and the venue can accommodate such a bigger crowd. The Society should be informed ahead of time if the anticipated participants will exceed 100 in order to prepare additional materials. 7. The host institution’s Organizing Committee should provide the Society with the following at least 3 weeks before the scheduled date of activity: The logo of the hosting hospital, original size and magnified copy (at least ¼ bond paper size) sent through email - “[email protected] The exact name and address of the venue where the seminar will be conducted The preferred dates of the group The name of the persons who will co-sign the certificates of attendance (at least 2 names) The persons who will emcee the program, give the opening and closing remark, invocation, national anthem The list of the ICC of the host hospital The estimated number of participants numbers of the organizing committee (include e-mails and cell phone numbers) 8. The host institution’s Organizing Committee will be the one to prepare the certificate of appreciation for the speakers. 9. The host institution’s Organizing Committee will likewise be responsible to look for sponsors for the meals of the participants: 2 snacks and lunch each for Day 1 and Day 2. The following pharmaceutical companies are very much active in infection control: Glaxo-Smith Kline (GSK), MSD, Aventis, Pfizer Inc., Astra-Zeneca, Bayer, Roche, Upjohn, Cathay, Johnson & Jhonson, 3M, Schering Plough, Eli Lilly, Wyeth and Bristol-Myers-Squibb.

No drug company should be allowed to put up banners inside and outside the venue, EXCEPT for the MAJOR Sponsor of the activity. However, they can provide pads, gimmicks or pens for the participants. Booth exhibits are discouraged. For other expenses aside from food (e.g., venue rental, institutional fee), the host institution’s organizing committee shall be responsible to look for other sources or sponsors provided that these companies are not direct competitors of the major sponsor. Please inform the Society. The sponsoring agency, so we can communicate with other needs of the course. 10. The society will provide the following: The transportation service, hotel accommodation of the speakers and facilitators of the seminar course ( if needed) The Seminar Kit with pens and pads All materials for seminar course including manual/handouts for each participant Certificate of attendance of participants, CV of speakers Final program of activities, evaluation form, attendance sheet 11.
