Atrio nel castello di Macbeth che mette in altre stanze. Lady Macbeth leggendo una lettera.

Sir di Caudore, vaticinio uscito

Dalle veggenti stesse

Che predissero un serto al capo mio.

Ma sarai tu malvagio?

Pien di misfatti è il calle

Della potenza, e mal per lui che il piede

Dubitoso vi pone, e retrocede!

Fra poco il re vedrai.

Musica villereccia, la quale avanzandosi a poco a poco annuncia l'arrivo del Re.

Sappia la sposa mia che, pronta appena

La mia tazza notturna,

Vo' che un tocco di squilla a me lo avvisi.

Il servo parte

MACBETH

Mi si affaccia un pugnal! L'elsa a me volta?

Se larva non dei tu, ch'io ti brandisca...

Mi sfuggi... eppur ti veggo! A me precorri

Sul conuso cammin che nella mente

Di seguir disegnava!... Orrenda imago!

Solco sanguigno la tua lama irriga!...

Ma nulla esiste ancor. Il sol cruento

Mio pensier la dà forma, e come vera

Mi presenta allo sguardo una chimera.

Sulla metà del mondo

Or morta è la natura; or l'assasino

MACBETH

Vendetta! tuonarmi com'angeli d'ira,

Udrò di Duncano le sante virtù.

LADY

(Quell'animo trema, combatte, delira...

Chi mai lo direbbe l'invitto che fu?)

a Macbeth

Il pugnal là riportate...

Le sue guardie insanguinate...

Che l'accusa in lor ricada.

MACBETH

Io colà?... non posso entrar!

LADY

Dammi il ferro.

Strappa dalle mani di Macbeth il pugnale, ed entra nelle stanze del Re.

Bussano forte alla porta del castello

MACBETH

Ogni rumore mi spaventa!

Si guarda le mani

Oh! questa mano!

Non potrebbe l'Oceano

Queste mani a me lavar!

LADY

rientrando

Ve'! le mani ho lorde anch'io;

Poco spruzzo, e monde son.

L'opra anch'essa andrà in oblio...

Battono di nuovo

MACBETH

Odi tu? raddoppia il suon!

LADY

Vieni altrove! ogni sospetto

Rimoviam dall'uccisor;

Torna in te! fa cor, Macbetto!

Non ti vinca un vil timor.

MACBETH

Oh, potessi il mio delitto

Dalla mente cancellar!

Deh, sapessi, o Re trafitto,

L'alto sonno a te spezzar!

MACDUFF

Di destarlo per tempo il Re m'impose:

E di già tarda è l'ora.

Qui m'attendete, o Banco.

Entra nella stanza del Re

BANCO

Oh, qual orrenda notte!

Per l'aer cieco lamentose voci,

Voci s'udian di morte.

Gemea cupo l'augel de' tristi auguri,

E della terra si sentì il tremore...

Banco entra precipitoso nella stanza del Re

BANCO

E' morto assassinato il Re Duncano!

Le tue fiamme discendano, o Ciel.

O gran Dio, che ne' cuori penetri,

A squarciar delle tenebre il vel!

Il figlio di Duncan, per l'improvvisa

Sua fuga in Inghilterra,

Parricida fu detto, e vuoto il soglio

A te lasciò.

MACBETH

Ma le spirtali donne

Banco padre di regi han profetato...

Dunque i suoi figli regneran? Duncano

Per costor sarà spento?

LADY

Egli e suo figlio vivono, è ver...

MACBETH

Ma vita immortale non hanno...

LADY

Ah si, non l'hanno!

MACBETH

Forz'è che scorra un altro sangue, o donna!

LADY

MACBETH

Al venir di questa notte.

Immoto sarai tu nel tuo disegno?

when the King's messengers hailed me

Thane of Cawdor, it fulfilled a prophecy

those seers had made.

They also predicted a crown for my head.

Keep this secret in your heart. Farewell.“

You are an

ambitious soul, Macbeth. You long for greatness,

but will you be wicked enough?

The road to power

is filled with crimes, and woe to him

who sets an uncertain foot upon it and retreats!

Come! Hurry! I wish

to light a fire in your cold heart!

to carry out this bold undertaking.

The prophetesses promise you

the throne of Scotland.

Why delay? Accept the gift,

A servant enters.

The King will come here this evening.

through the shadows.

Now the witches consummate their secrets.

Motionless earth!

Stay hushed at my steps.

A bell rings.

It is decided.

That bell invites me!

Do not hear it, Duncan.

It is a knell

That summons you to heaven or to hell.

He goes into the King’s chambers.

Sleep reigns over everyone.

To his mournful farewell.

I shall hear Duncan's holy virtues

A room in the castle.

The deed cannot he undone.

The sorceresses spoke the truth and you are king.

Because of his sudden flight to England

Duncan's son has been accused

of parricide

and the throne was left

empty for you.

MACBETH

But the witches predicted

that Banquo would father kings.

in the infernal brew

MACBETH

appearing at the entrance, addressing some of his men

Wait for me in silence until I call.

He goes towards the witches.

What are you doing, mysterious women?

WITCHES

A work with no name.

MACBETH

In the name of the infernal task I implore you,

let me know my destiny, even if

heaven and earth must renew their ancient struggle,

WITCHES

Do you wish to hear it from the unknown powers

whom we obey, or from us?

MACBETH

I invoke them,

if they can tell me

the dark secrets of the future.

WITCHES

Wandering spirits, arise from the depths,

descend from the heights.

There is a flash of lightning and a head wearing a helmet appears from out of the ground.

MACBETH

Tell me, spirit …

WITCHES

He has read what is in your heart

Stay quiet and hear his secret words.

APPARITION

O Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth!

Beware Macduff!

MACBETH

You confirm my suspicions at what I have heard!

Just one word …

The apparition vanishes.

WITCHES

He will not hear questions.

Here is another, more powerful.

Lightning: a bloodstained child appears.

Stay quiet and hear his mysterious words.

APPARITION

O Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth!

You may be bloody and fierce:

no man born of woman will harm you.

It disappears.

MACBETH

O Macduff, I forgive you your life.

No, you will die. Your death

will be a double shield on my royal breast!

Thunder and lightning. A child appears wearing a crown and carrying a sapling.

But what does this thunder and lightning mean?

A child with a king's crown!

WITCHES

Be quiet and listen.

APPARITION

Be strong:

you will be glorious and invincible

until you see Birnam wood

come marching towards you.

It disappears.

MACBETH

Oh, what a cheering prophecy! No wood

was ever moved by magic power.

Now tell me: will the descendants

of Banquo ever mount the throne?

WITCHES

Do not ask!

MACBETH

I must know!

Or else my sword will fall on you!

The cauldron sinks into the ground.

The cauldron has disappeared! Why?

What is this music? Speak! What is it?

WITCHES

Appear! Appear! Appear!

Then like mist vanish again.

Eight kings by, one after the other. Lastly comes Banquo, carrying a mirror in his hand.

MACBETH

to the first

Away, royal phantom!

You remind me of Banquo.

Your crown is a bolt of lightning

burning my eyes.

to the second

Away, frightening vision,

your brow is wrapped in bands!

Are there more?

to the others

A third? A fourth? A fifth?

Oh, horror! The last one

is carrying a mirror,

and new kings are endorsed

within the crystal.

And Banquo, oh, awful sight,

you laugh while you point them out to me?

He draws his sword and strikes out at the ghosts.

Die, you deadly offspring!

He stops.

But you have no life!

Oh, terror!

They will live.

MACBETH

Oh, I am lost!

He faints.

WITCHES

He has fainted. Spirits of the air,

bring the unconscious King back to his senses.

Spirits descend, and while they dance around Macbeth the witches sing.

WITCHES

Nymphs and white-winged sylphs,

blow upon that pallid brow,

weave a whirl of sweet songs

to comfort his body and soul.

The witches and spirits disappear.

MACBETH

They have gone! Oh, may this hour

be eternally damned!

A herald enters.

HERALD

The Queen!

MACBETH

What is it?

LADY MACBETH

I have found you at last!

What were you doing?

MACBETH

I have been questioning the witches again.

To beware Macduff.

That no man born of woman will kill me.

marches against me.

All our enemies' blood will be spilled.

Now I see your old courage again.

Hour of death and vengeance,

thunder and resound throughout the whole world,

bewildering, like the dark intention

that has shaken our hearts to their depths.

Fate's remorseless decree;

this business will end with crime

since it was begun with blood.

ACT FOUR

A deserted p1ace on the border between Scotland and England. In the distance is Birnam wood.

CHORUS

Oppressed land of ours! You cannot have

the sweet name of mother

now that you have become a tomb

for your sons.

From orphans, from those who mourne,

some for husbands, some for children,

at each new dawn a cry goes up

to outrage heaven.

To that cry heaven replies

as if moved to pity,

oppressed land, it would

proclaim your grief for ever.

The bell tolls constantly for death

but no-one is so bold

as to shed a vain tear

for the suffering and dying.

Oppressed land of ours!

My homeland, oh,my homeland!

MACDUFF

Oh my children! You have all been killed

by that tyrant, together with

your poor mother! Ah, did I

leave a mother and her children in the clutches of that beast?

Alas, a father's hand was not there

to shield you, my dear ones,

from the treacherous assassins

who put you to death.

And in vain you called on me,

a fugitive, in hiding,

with your last gasp,

with your last breath.

Lord, bring me face to face

with this tyrant, and if he escapes me

let your merciful arms

open to him.

Drums sound and Malcolm enters, leading a large number of English soldiers.

MALCOLM

Where are we? What wood is that?

CHORUS

Birnam wood.

MALCOLM

Let every man break off a branch

and carry it in front of

him to conceal himself.

to Macduff

Let vengeance comfort you.

MACDUFF

I cannot have it. He has no children.

MALCOLM

Whoever does not hate the land of his birth

let him take up arms and follow me.

ALL

Our betrayed homeland

calls us, in tears.

Brothers! Let us run

to rescue the oppressed!

The wrath of God

will destroy the villain.

God has grown tired

of his awful crimes.

A hall in Macbeth's castle. Night.

DOCTOR

We have waited in

vain for two nights,

GENTLEWOMAN

She will appear tonight.

DOCTOR

What was she talking about in her sleep?

GENTLEWOMAN

I must not repeat it to any living man.

Lady Macbeth enterswith a lamp.

Here she is!

DOCTOR

That lamp in her hand … ?

GENTLEWOMAN

It is the lamp which she

keeps always beside her bed.

DOCTOR

Oh, her eyes are wide open!

GENTLEWOMAN

Yet she cannot see.

Lady Macbeth puts down the lamp and rubs her hands as if washhig something off.

DOCTOR

Why is she rubbing her hands?

GENTLEWOMAN

She thinks that she's washing them.

LADY MACBETH

There's still a spot here.

Away, I tell you, curse you!

One, two, it is time!

Are you shaking? Don't you dare go in?

A soldier and so cowardly?

Shame! Come on, hurry!

Who would have thought that there would be

so much blood in that old man?

DOCTOR

What did she say?

LADY MACBETH

The Thane of Fife

was he not recently a husband and father?

What happened?

GENTLEWOMAN and DOCTOR

Oh, horror!

LADY MACBETH

looking at her hands

Shall I never be able

to clean these hands?

There's still

human blood here. Thee perfumes

of all Arabia could not clean

this little hand.

What's done cannot be undone.

A hall in the castle.

The powers that prophecy have foretold:

'You may be bloody and fierce,

no man born of woman will harm you.'

No. I am not afraid of you, nor of the boy

who leads you, This attack will

confirm my position on the throne

or push me off for ever. And yet

I feel the life drying up in my veins!

Mercy, respect, love,

the comfort of declining years,

these will place no flowers

on your old age.

Nor should you hope

for kind words on your royal tomb:

only curses, alas,

will be your funeral hymn.

GENTLEWOMAN

Un bosque. Aparecen tres grupos de brujas, uno tras otro, entre truenos y relámpagos.

¡He degollado un verraco!

PRIMERAS BRUJAS

¿Y tú?

TERCERAS BRUJAS

Me he acordado

que la mujer de un piloto,

me mandó al infierno,

pero al marido, que ha zarpado,

lo haré naufragar con su barco.

PRIMERAS BRUJAS

Un huracán te proporcionaré...

SEGUNDAS BRUJAS

La tempestad levantaré...

TERCERAS BRUJAS

Hacia los bancos de arena lo llevaré.

Se oye el redoble de un tambor.

TODAS

¡Un tambor! ¿Qué sucede?

Viene Macbeth. ¡Helo aquí!

Se agitan y se entremezclan en una danza arremolinada.

Las hermanas vagabundas

van por el aire, van sobre las olas,

saben trenzar un círculo

que comprende tierra y mar.

Entran Macbeth y Banquo.

MACBETH

¡Jamás vi día tan horrible y bello a la vez!

BANQUO

¡Ni tan glorioso!

MACBETH

viendo a las brujas

Oh, ¿quiénes serán éstas?

BANQUO

¿Quiénes sois? ¿Sois de este mundo

o de otro planeta?

Quisiera llamaros mujeres, pero me lo

impiden vuestras repugnantes barbas.

Las brujas desaparecen.

¡Qué profecías tan misteriosas!

Entran mensajeros del rey.

MENSAJEROS

¡Valeroso Macbeth! Tu señor el rey

te ha nombrado señor de Cawdor.

MACBETH

¡Pero si el actual señor aún os gobierna!

MENSAJEROS

¡No! Fulminado por la ley

ha expirado bajo el hacha.

BANQUO

horrorizado. Para sí

¡Ah, el infierno ha dicho la verdad!

MACBETH

para sí, en voz baja

Dos vaticinios se han cumplido ya...

Y el tercero me promete un trono...

Pero, ¿por qué se me erizan los cabellos?

Pensamiento criminal, ¿de dónde has nacido?...

Hacia la corona que me ofrece el destino

no alzaré mi ávida mano.

BANQUO

para sí

¡Oh, cómo se hincha este hombre de orgullo

ante la esperanza de un trono real!

Pero a menudo los crueles espíritus de la niebla

dicen verdades para engañarnos,

y nos abandonan después, malditos,

sobre el abismo que ellos mismos abrieron.

MENSAJEROS

¿Por qué nos escucha tan fríamente, Macbeth?

¿Por qué no ha serenado su semblante?

Los mensajeros salen. Las brujas regresan.

CORO DE BRUJAS

¡Se han alejado!... Coincidiremos

de nuevo cuando... el retumbar oigamos.

¡Se han alejado... huyamos... esperemos

que se cumpla el destino... en el aquelarre.

Veremos a Macbeth... volver,

y nuestro oráculo... le hablará de nuevo.

¡Huyamos, huyamos!

Salen

Salón en el castillo de Macbeth, con diversas habitaciones. Entra lady Macbeth, leyendo una carta.

LADY MACBETH

"En el día de la victoria las encontró...

aún yo estaba estupefacto por lo que escuché,

cuando los mensajeros del rey me saludaron

como señor de Cawdor; vaticinio hecho

por las mismas videntes que

predijeron una corona para mi cabeza.

Esconde en tu corazón este secreto. Adiós."

Ambicioso espíritu

es el tuyo, Macbeth...

Anhelas la grandeza,

¿pero tendrás la suficiente maldad?

¡El camino que conduce hasta el poder

está lleno de crímenes, y pobre del que avanza

con pie dudoso y retrocede!

¡Ven! ¡Apresúrate! ¡Quiero encender

tu frío corazón!

Yo te daré valor para cumplir

la audaz empresa;

las videntes te prometieron

el trono de Escocia.

¿A qué esperas? Acepta el regalo,

siéntate en él para reinar.

Entra un criado.

CRIADO

El rey llegará al caer la tarde.

LADY MACBETH

¿Qué dices? ¿Macbeth le acompaña?

CRIADO

Él le acompaña.

La noticia, señora, es cierta.

LADY MACBETH

Que sea agasajado como merece un rey.

El criado sale.

¿Duncan vendrá?... ¿aquí?, ¿esta noche?

¡Surgid, pues, ministros infernales,

que animáis y excitáis a los mortales

a cometer crímenes, a verter sangre!

Y tú noche, envuélvenos en eternas tinieblas

para que el cuchillo no vea el pecho al que hiere.

Entra Macbeth.

MACBETH

¡Esposa mía!

LADY MACBETH

¡Cawdor!

MACBETH

Dentro de poco verás al rey...

LADY MACBETH

¿Y cuando partirá?

MACBETH

Mañana.

LADY MACBETH

¡Ojalá el sol no salga mañana!

MACBETH

¿Qué dices?

LADY MACBETH

¿Acaso no me entiendes?...

MACBETH

¡Comprendo, comprendo!

LADY MACBETH

¿Y bien?

MACBETH

¿Y si fallara el golpe?

LADY MACBETH

No fallará.... si tú no tiemblas.

Se oyen a lo lejos ecos de una música, que se aproxima poco a poco

¡El rey!

Ahora ven contento a recibirlo conmigo.

Salen. Se oye una música que anuncia la llegada del rey. Éste cruza el atrio de camino hacia sus aposentos acompañado de Banquo, Macduff, Malcolm, Macbeth, lady Macbeth y su séquito. Entra Macbeth con un criado.

MACBETH

Di a mi esposa que una vez que esté dispuesta

mi bebida nocturna,

el sonido de una campana me lo advierta.

Se va el criado.

¿Es un puñal lo que se me aparece?

¿Con la empuñadura vuelta hacia mi?

Si no eres una visión, que yo te pueda blandir...

¡Huyes de mí... y aun así te veo!

¡Anticípame

el confuso camino que en mi mente

pensaba seguir!...

¡Horrenda imagen!...

¡Tu hoja parece trazar un surco sanguinolento!...

Pero nada existe aún...

Es sólo mi espantoso pensamiento

el que le da forma, y como si fuese cierta

me presenta ante los ojos una quimera.

Sobre la mitad del mundo

aparece muerta la naturaleza: ahora el asesino

se arrastra como un fantasma entre las sombras

y las brujas consuman sus misteriosos maleficios.

¡Inmóvil tierra! ¡Permanece muda ante mis pasos!

Escucha una campana.

Esta decidido... ¡esa campana me invita a hacerlo!

¡No la oyes, Duncan! Es el tañido

de la eternidad que al cielo te llama, o al infierno.

Macbeth entra en los aposentos del rey

LADY MACBETH

El sueño reina sobre todos...

¡Ah! ¿Qué fue ese lamento?

¡El búho responde a su lúgubre adiós!

MACBETH

desde dentro

¿Quién va?

LADY MACBETH

¿Se habrá despertado acaso antes

de recibir el golpe mortal?

Aparece Macbeth, vacilante y descompuesto, con un puñal en la mano.

MACBETH

¡Todo ha acabado!

Se acerca a Lady Macbeth, y le dice en voz baja

¡Fatal mujer mía! ¿No has escuchado

también tú un lamento?

LADY MACBETH

He oído el grito del búho...

Pero ¿qué has dicho?

MACBETH

¿Yo?

LADY MACBETH

Hace poco me pareció oírte.

MACBETH

¿Mientras yo descendía hasta aquí?

LADY MACBETH

¡Sí!

MACBETH

¡Dime! En la estancia contigua,

¿quién duerme?

LADY MACBETH

El hijo del rey...

MACBETH

mirándose las manos

¡Oh, visión, horrible visión!

LADY MACBETH

Aparta de ella tu mirada.

MACBETH

Oí que en el sueño oraban

los cortesanos: "Que Dios

siempre nos asista", dijeron;

"amén", quise decir yo también,

pero la palabra rebelde

se heló en mis labios.

LADY MACBETH

¡Locuras!

MACBETH

¿Por qué no pude

repetir ese "amén"?

LADY MACBETH

Locuras, locuras que dispersarán

los primeros rayos del día.

MACBETH

Entonces oí esta voz dentro de mí:

"Tendrás por almohadones sólo zarzas",

¡oh Macbeth!

¡Has asesinado el sueño para siempre, Glamis!

¡No quedan para ti mas que noches en vela,

Cawdor!

LADY MACBETH

Pero dime

¿no te pareció escuchar otra voz?

"Eres orgulloso, oh Macbeth, pero sin audacia;

Glamis, vacila, te detienes,

cuando tu obra esta a medio hacer

¡no eres más que un niño vanidoso, Cawdor!"

MACBETH

Como los ángeles de la ira clamando venganza,

oiré las virtudes santas de Duncan pregonar.

LADY MACBETH

para sí

Tiembla, delira y lucha consigo mismo...

¿Quién diría que fue un invicto soldado?

a Macbeth

Repón allí el puñal...

Ensucia con sangre a los guardias del rey...

para que la acusación recaiga sobre ellos.

MACBETH

¿Allí?... ¡No puedo volver a entrar!

LADY MACBETH

Dame el arma.

Lady Macbeth entra en los aposentos del rey. Se oye golpear con fuerza la puerta del castillo.

MACBETH

¡Cualquier ruido

me asusta!

Se mira las manos.

¡Oh, esta mano!

¡No podría el océano entero

lavarme la sangre de estas manos!

LADY MACBETH

volviendo a entrar

¡Mira! También yo tengo sucias las manos;

un poco de agua y quedarán limpias.

Así también nuestra obra caerá en el olvido...

Golpean de nuevo

MACBETH

¿Oyes eso? ¡El ruido es aún más fuerte!

LADY MACBETH

¡Vamos a otro lugar!

Alejemos toda

sospecha del asesino.

¡Que vuelva a ti el valor, Macbeth!

No te dejes vencer por un estúpido temor.

MACBETH

¡Oh, si pudiera borrar

de la memoria mi crimen!

¡Oh, si pudiera, oh rey asesinado,

romper tu profundo sueño!

Lady Macbeth logra arrastrar a su marido hacia afuera. Poco después entran Macduff y Banquo.

MACDUFF

El rey me ordenó que le despertara temprano,

y ya es tarde.

Espere aquí, Banquo.

Se dirige hacia las habitaciones del rey.

BANQUO

¡Oh, qué noche tan horrenda!

A través del aire oscuro se oían

voces como lamentos, voces de muerte...

Gemía sombrío el pájaro de los tristes augurios,

y se oyó cómo temblaba la tierra

Macduff regresa

MACDUFF

agitadísimo

¡Horror! ¡Horror! ¡Horror!

BANQUO

Pero, ¿qué ha sucedido?

MACDUFF

jadeante

Allí dentro,

contempladlo vos mismo...

¡yo no puedo describirlo!

Mientras Banquo entra en los aposentos reales, Macduff da la alarma.

¡Corred!... Ea... ¡venid todos corriendo! ¡Todos!

¡Oh, qué crimen! ¡Oh, qué crimen!

¡Oh, qué traición!

Entran apresuradamente Macbeth, lady Macbeth, la dama de compañía de lady Macbeth y varios sirvientes.

MACBETH Y LADY MACBETH

¿Qué desorden es éste?

BANQUO

Sale espantado

¡Estamos perdidos!

TODOS

¿Qué ha ocurrido? ¡Hablad!

¿Ha sucedido algo raro?

BANQUO

horrorizado

¡El rey Duncan ha muerto asesinado!

Estupor general

TODOS

Abre, infierno, la boca y engulle

en tu seno todo lo creado

y que sobre el execrable asesino

desciendan tus iracundas llamas.

¡Oh Dios, que penetras en los corazones,

asístenos, sólo en Ti confiamos

en Ti buscamos luz y consejo

para romper el velo de las tinieblas!

Que tu ira formidable y pronta

castigue al cruel, oh fatal vengador;

y estampe sobre su rostro la misma señal

que estampaste sobre el primer asesino.

ACTO SEGUNDO

Una estancia del castillo de Macbeth. Aparece Macbeth, pensativo, seguido de lady Macbeth, que lo observa.

LADY MACBETH

¿Por qué me evitas y sumido te veo

siempre en profundos pensamientos?

¡Lo hecho, hecho está! Las hechiceras

dijeron la verdad, y tú eres rey.

El hijo de Duncan, por su precipitada

fuga a Inglaterra,

fue tenido por parricida y te dejó

a ti el trono vacante.

MACBETH

Pero las endemoniadas mujeres

profetizaron que Banquo sería padre de reyes....

¿Reinarán entonces sus hijos? ¿Y es para esto

para lo que habremos matado a Duncan?

LADY MACBETH

Él y su hijo viven,

es cierto...

MACBETH

Pero no tienen

vida inmortal...

LADY MACBETH

¡Ah, claro, no la tienen!

MACBETH

¡Es necesario que se derrame más sangre,

mujer!

LADY MACBETH

¿Dónde? ¿Cuándo?

MACBETH

Cuando anochezca.

LADY MACBETH

¿Sabrás mantenerte firme en tu propósito?

MACBETH

¡Banquo! La eternidad te abre su reino.

Macbeth sale precipitadamente.

LADY MACBETH

¡La luz languidece y el faro que eternamente

recorre los anchos cielos se extingue!

Noche deseada, vela providencialmente

sobre la mano culpable que herirá.

¡Un nuevo crimen!... ¡Es necesario!

Debe cumplirse la obra fatal.

Los muertos no necesitan reinar;

para ellos ¡un réquiem y la eternidad!...

Con arrebato

¡Oh, voluptuosidad del trono!

¡Oh cetro, al fin eres mío!

Todo deseo mortal calla y se cumple en ti.

Caerá exánime dentro de poco

quien fue profetizado rey.

Un parque. A lo lejos se divisa el castillo de Macbeth. Dos grupos de sicarios entran en la escena.

PRIMER GRUPO

¿Quién os ordenó uniros a nosotros?

SEGUNDO GRUPO

Fue Macbeth.

PRIMER GRUPO

¿Y por qué razón?

SEGUNDO GRUPO

Debemos matar a Banquo.

PRIMER GRUPO

¿Cuándo?... ¿dónde?...

SEGUNDO GRUPO

Junto con vosotros.

Él vendrá aquí con su hijo.

PRIMER GRUPO

Está bien, quedaos.

TODOS

¡Se ha puesto el sol!... ahora la noche reina

malvada... sanguinolenta;

ciega noche, apaga

toda luz en la tierra y en el cielo.

¡Se acerca la hora!... Escondámonos.

Esperémoslo en silencio.

¡Tiembla, Banquo!... ¡La punta del puñal

se acerca a tu costado!.

Todos se ocultan. Entran Banquo y Fleance.

BANQUO

¡Vigila tus pasos, hijo mío!...

Salgamos de estas tinieblas...

Un sentido desconocido

siento nacer en mi pecho,

lleno de tristes presentimientos.

¡Cómo se precipitan desde el cielo

las sombras, cada vez mas oscuras!

En una noche igual a ésta asesinaron

a Duncan, mi señor.

Mil penosas imágenes

me anuncian una desgracia

y llenan mi pensamiento

de fantasmas y terror.

Banquo y Fleance se pierden entre los árboles. La voz de Banquo se oye a lo lejos.

¡Dios mío!.... ¡Huye, hijo mío!...

¡Oh traición!

Fleance cruza la escena perseguido por un sicario

Salón en el castillo de Macbeth. Aparecen sentados lady Macbeth, Macbeth, Macduff, la dama de compañía de Lady Macbeth, nobles y damas.

CORO

¡Salve, oh rey!

MACBETH

¡Salve también a vosotros,

nobilísimos señores!

CORO

¡Salve, oh señora!

LADY MACBETH

Recibid mi agradecimiento

por vuestros honores.

MACBETH

¡Que cada cual se siente

según su deseo!

Estoy muy contento de acoger

a comensales como vosotros.

Que mi consorte se siente

en el trono a ella reservado,

pero ante todo dígnese

brindar en honor vuestro.

LADY MACBETH

A tu real invitación

me hallo ya dispuesta, oh mi señor.

CORO

Y vos nos oiréis responder

como nos dicta el corazón.

LADY MACBETH

Cólmese la copa

del vino más selecto;

que nazca el placer

y muera el dolor.

Uno de los sicarios se asoma a una puerta. Macbeth se apresura a acercársele.

MACBETH

Tienes el rostro manchado de sangre.

SICARIO

Es la de Banquo.

MACBETH

¿Es verdad lo que oigo?

SICARIO

Sí.

MACBETH

Pero, ¿y su hijo?

SICARIO

Se nos escapó.

MACBETH

¡Cielos!.... pero, ¿y Banquo?

SICARIO

Ha muerto.

Macbeth despide al sicario, que se va.

LADY MACBETH

acercándose a Macbeth

¿Qué te aparta, oh rey, mi esposo,

de la alegría del banquete?...

MACBETH

Falta Banquo, el valeroso,

que completaría la guirnalda elegida

de entre cuanto hay de más digno

en todo nuestro reino.

LADY MACBETH

Dijo que acudiría pero no lo ha cumplido.

MACBETH

En su lugar me sentaré yo.

Macbeth se dispone a sentarse, pero el espectro de Banquo, sólo visible para él, ocupa su lugar.

¿Quién de vosotros ha hecho esto?

¿De qué hablas?

MACBETH

Tus ensangrentadas guedejas

no agites contra mí...

¡Macbeth está enfermo!

una cosa que asustaría

al propio demonio en persona...

Oh, puesto que puedes sacudir

¿Puede el sepulcro devolver

a los que han sido asesinados?

El espectro desaparece.

LADY MACBETH

¡Estás loco!

Estos ojos míos lo han visto...

¡Me atrevo a todo lo que se atrevan los demás!

Conviértete aunque sea en tigre,

en amenazador león

agárrame y no verás temblar a Macbeth

así podrás saber... si siento terror...

¡Márchate, vete, fantasma terrible!

El espectro desaparece y Macbeth se repone

¡La vida vuelve a mí!

El velo del futuro

de las brujas desgarraré.

ha creado absurdos fantasmas.

El delito está consumado

y quien ha muerto no puede volver.

¡Siniestros misterios!...

Abandonemos este país

regido por una mano maldita,

sólo un malvado podría vivir aquí.

¡Siniestros misterios! ¡Aterrorizado

por fantasmas ha hablado!

En una cueva de ladrones

se ha convertido esta tierra.

ACTO TERCERO

Una oscura cueva. En el centro un caldero hirviendo, a su alrededor se hallan las brujas reunidas; truenos y relámpagos.

PRIMERAS BRUJAS

Tres veces ha maullado la gata en celo.

SEGUNDAS BRUJAS

Tres veces la abubilla ha dejado oír su lamento.

TERCERAS BRUJAS

Tres veces ha gañido al viento el puercoespín.

TODAS

Ha llegado el momento.

¡Vamos! Solícitas revolvamos el puchero

mezclando en círculo poderosos potajes;

hermanas: ¡manos a la obra!

El agua ya humea, hierve y produce espuma.

Echándolo en el caldero

PRIMERAS BRUJAS

Tú, venenoso sapo,

que chupas el acónito;

tú, zarza; tú raíz

arrancada durante el crepúsculo,

cuécete y hierve

en el puchero infernal.

SEGUNDAS BRUJAS

Tú, lengua de víbora

tú, pelo de murciélago,

tú, sangre de mono,

tú, diente de perro pordiosero,

anda, hierve y enróscate

en el caldo infernal.

TERCERAS BRUJAS

Tú, dedo de un niño

estrangulado al nacer;

tú, labio de un tártaro,

tú, corazón de un hereje,

entrad y consolidad

el potaje infernal.

Todas las brujas inician una danza en torno al caldero.

Hierve.... hierve.

¡Y vosotros, espíritus

negros y blancos,

rojos y pálidos,

¡mezclad!

Vosotros que tanto

sabéis mezclar,

¡mezclad de nuevo!

Entra Macbeth.

MACBETH

Al fondo, hablando a alguno de los suyos

Interroguemos al destino por última vez.

Una obra sin nombre.

MACBETH

¡Pues, por esta obra infernal yo os conjuro!

Rayos y truenos. Aparece un niño coronado, portador de un arbolillo.

lleva un reluciente espejo en la mano,

y nuevos reyes se suceden

dentro del misterioso cristal....

Desenvaina la espada y se lanza en pos de los espectros.

¡Ah! Si no estáis vivos!

Paraje desierto en la frontera de Escocia e Inglaterra. A lo lejos el bosque de Birnam. Refugiados escoceses, se hallan agrupados. Macduff está apartado, lleno de pesadumbre.

de madre no puedo darte,

ahora que toda tú, para tus hijos,

te has convertido en un sepulcro!

De los huérfanos y de los que lloran

por un esposo, por unos hijos,

al nacer el nuevo día

se alza un grito que hiere los cielos.

A ese grito el cielo responde

casi como si, conmovido,

quisiera propagar por el infinito,

¡patria oprimida, tu dolor!

La campana dobla siempre a muerto,

¡pero nadie es tan audaz

que ose derramar un llanto

inútil por aquellos que sufren y mueren!

MACDUFF

¡Oh, hijos, oh hijos míos!

Por aquel tirano todos

fuisteis asesinados, y junto con vosotros,

¡vuestra desventurada madre!

Ah, ¿y entre las garras de este tigre fui capaz

de dejar a la madre y a los hijos?

¡Ah, la paterna mano

no ha sido vuestro escudo, queridos míos,

contra los pérfidos sicarios

que os hirieron mortalmente!

A mí, fugitivo, oculto,

con el último sollozo,

con vuestro último suspiro.

Al son de un tambor llega Malcolm, conduciendo a un gran número de soldados ingleses.

para ocultarse tras ella!

Una sala en el castillo de Macbeth. Es de noche. El médico y la dama de compañía de lady Macbeth hablan en voz baja.

No nací, fui arrancado

antes de tiempo del seno materno.

un esprit ambitieux..Tu aspires à la grandeur,

Le chemin du pouvoir est rempli

de crimes, malheur à celui dont le pied

s’y pose avec hésitation, puis recule.

Viens, hâte-toi! Je veux réchauffer

ton cœur refroidi

Je te donnerai le courage,

l’audace de réaliser cette entreprise

Les prophétesses te promettent

le trône d’Ecosse...

Pourquoi hésiter? Accepte le donc

Monte sur le trône pour régner.

Un son de trombe à l’extérieur. La scène est transforme et représente une vaste plaine entourée de hauteurs et de buissons. Le fond est occupé par des soldats anglais qui s’avancent lentement, chacun d’eux portant devant lui une branche d’arbre.
