One is the feast day of its official patron saint, Our Lady of the Assumption every Aug. 15, and the other one is the feast day of St. Therese of the Child Jesus every fourth week of October. The 26th and 27th of that month are important dates for Calubian, being the site of St. Therese Diocesan Shrine. Police to probe involvement of foreigners in kidnapping THE Philippine National Police (PNP) is conducting a research on the involvement of expatriates and other foreigners in kidnapping activities in the Philippines. On instructions of PNP Chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome, the anti-kidnapping group under Senior Superintendent Renato Gumban will try to establish any pattern of syndicated kidnapping in all previous cases involving foreigners linked to the kidnapping of their fellow countrymen. Bartolome’s order was prompted by the arrest on Thursday in Cebu City of

a South Korean believed to be the prime suspect behind the kidnapping of another Korean and his Filipina wife in the southern city. Based on AKG records, this is not the first time that a foreigner was involved in the kidnapping of his countryman. “We need to look deeper into kidnapping cases of similar nature to determine if there is a pattern of syndicated crime operation of transnational dimension,” Bartolome said. Three Filipino henchmen of the arrested Korean suspect are also under police custody for direct

involvement in the kidnapping. On Saturday, Korean Song Sung Heum, 33; and Filipinos Gregorio Dealagon, Richard Dealagon, and Leonardo Bolabon were presented for inquest proceedings before government prosecutors for the kidnapping and serious illegal detention of couple Jun Hyun Chung and his Filipina common-law wife Charisse Santiago. AKG records indicate that the couple was snatched by the three Filipino suspects from their home in downtown Cebu City late morning of October 24, shackled,

shoved into a car and driven around Cebu suburbs. On the evening of the same day, Cebu City police and AKG operatives arrested the trio and rescued the couple while the suspects were attempting to withdraw cash from the victim’s at an auto-teller machine. The suspects readily itted to be acting on orders of Song who reportedly demanded P4 million from the victims. 5,000 policemen to be deployed during ‘Undas’ in Eastern Visayas CAMP KANGLEON, Palo, Leyte — The Philippine National Police in Eastern Visayas will deploy more or less 5,000 policemen during the observance of the “Undas”, the highest police official in the region told reporters in an interview at his office here. Police Chief Superintendent Elmer Ragadio Soria, PNP-8 regional director, informed reporters that out of the more than 6,000 police force in Eastern Visayas more or less 5,000 policemen will be deployed to the field starting Wednesday, October 31 to Friday, November 2 for the observance of the All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. PCSupt Soria informed reporters that the entire police force in Eastern Visayas has been placed on full alert to provide maximum security coverage and public safety services to motorists and commuters who will be traveling in the region going home for the “undas” and at the time when people

will flock to cemeteries throughout the region to observe All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day to ensure traffic management, maintain peace and order during the massive convergence of people and vehicles all headed to and in the cemeteries. PCSupt. Soria said deployment of police officers throughout the region is part of the Eastern Visayas police implementation of the “Oplan Kaluluwa” which is focused on overall task to ensure that traffic management and the peace and order is maintained especially in cemeteries during “undas.” He said that most of the policemen deployed in the field are at the same time manning the police assistance centers who will extend assistance to the traveling public which includes security assistance along highways and major thoroughfares and traffic management along routes leading to cemeteries and other places of convergence. The police official

disclosed that security marshals are also deployed along major routes and set up assistance hubs in land, air and sea terminals, malls, resorts and other places of convergence to ensure the safety and security of the public.

Unilever donates basketball court TACLOBAN CITY – Filipinos are known to be fun loving people and always love recreation activities to include sports. Among sports, it is basketball that tops the most among the list of popular ball games. Reason why most towns and even barangays have basketball court; some are concrete, halfcourt and other are just improvised. This made Uniliver Philippines through its product Alaxan to implement a project that would not only promote sports but also revive the volunteerism spirits of Filipino, which we call “bayanihan” or “pintakasi” in local term.

The bayanihan concept that Alaxan through its tag line “Alaxan Galing Mo!” is implementing is called “Court of Inspiration.” Ten selected areas in the Visayas and Mindanao were chosen by the company to become beneficiary, among which is Brgy. 95-A in this city. Northern Samar to have new provincial hospital tare. According to the governor, the proposed provincial hospital is to be constructed at a cost of P400 million. “T

rick or treat!” Thus yell the children outside the door on the eve of All Saints Day. This tradition is famous among neighborhoods in the Western states. There certainly are some high-end villages in the country and even malls that are into this custom. Basically a pagan practice, celebrating Halloween in the evening of Hallowmas in the very secular way is not at all doing the justice to the holiday’s purpose. In the Roman Catholic Church, All Saints’ Day is a holy day of obligation where the faithful should hear the Holy Mass and receive the Holy Communion, unless restrained for valid reasons. The day is intended to commemorate all those who ed away and have attained the beatific vision in Heaven or otherwise called saints. The day before that, October 31, is generally an ordinary day which makes it even more bizarre to think that the evening before All Saints Day has got to be spooky as commercially practiced these days.

Scouting One great if not the greatest movement in the world, the one founded by Lord Robert Baden Powell, will close its monthlong activities today. The scouting movement which is well integrated into our schools system had the entire of October as its month. Various activities are held in public schools and in

some private schools as well. This movement that is worldwide is well established in our country and is made part of the schools’ extra-curriculum. Scouting affords boys and their gender counterparts, the opportunity for significant experiential learning that are often not taught at home and in the

People across the globe observe All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day practically in the same manner – visit the graveyard of loved ones and friends, light candles and pray for the soul of the departed who could yet be in purgatory believing that the dead need prayers, too. Others have the pagan tradition of bringing “offerings” to the dead. Protestants believe otherwise, though. If Catholics acknowledge three classifications of churches (people) namely the triumphant church or those in heaven, militant church or those still living and suffering church or those who are in purgatory, Protestants believe only one destination for the dead – either heaven or church. For them, purgatory does not exist, thus prayers are of no effect in bringing souls to heaven to those who to page 6

four corners of the classroom. It brings boys and girls to develop scouting skills that would make them better persons. It molds their character so that these young children will become upright citizens of society. They hone their undiscovered talents and skills. They discover their true self by interactions with their fellow scouts, in ways that are lively and fun. The movement teaches young individuals the basics of life’s survival which include cooking, first aid, communications skills through semaphore flag signaling, live saving, knot tying, trail signs and orienteering and many more. These skills are taught by way of friendly competi-

ing and fun. Many children are able to discover their talents and skills through the activities of scouting. Apart from school encampments mostly in public schools, the scouting month went without much notice. It may be due to the apparent lack of scoutmasters who can handle the scouts in the various activities and trainings. We know too well the great gender disproportion among our teachers, the male being outnumbered in most cases, resulting in female teachers taking the cudgels for the boys. But there is apparent lack of scouting activities at the council level as people notice the absence of scouts doing community volunteer to page 5

The recent tirade of impeached Chief Justice Renato C. Corona thrown to President Noynoy Aquino relative to his (deserved) fate is obviously a desperate attempt to “cleanse” his damaged reputation aimed at diverting attention of opinion leaders and the media to veer away from their belief and perception about his unquestionable sullied reputation. -oOoCorona who was impeached last December 2011 for “culpable violation of the Constitution; betrayal of public trust for misdeclaring his wealth”, and others more in the charge sheets filed in the Impeachment Trial has besmirched his reputation. He occupied that high seat supposedly to preside over cases of lawbreakers of the land whose cases are elevated to the Supreme Court – the court of last resort, so to speak. -oOoAware of this significant function in our Philippine justice system, it behooved upon the Impeachment Court to apply the law to every and anyone – the low and the high in the bureaucracy and society for that matter, and having been proven based on authentic evidences of documents to prove his guilt Corona was impeached. The public welcomed the decision. -oOoRenato Corona’s public outbursts, targeting a wellmeaning President about his

deserving sad fate therefore now is out of sync and goes beyond the bounds of legal ethics. Why? First: He brazenly disparaged the integrity of our justice system, like saying that this verdict on him was influenced by President Aquino; short of saying that officials sitting in the impeachment court don’t have minds of their own. Second: He unreasonably scoffed at PNoy’s battle cry – “matuwid na daan” of his istration. He should realize that his appointment as Chief Justice has been dubbed by some legal sectors of the land as a midnight appointee and a clear indication of running smack into the “matuid …” battle cry, a violation of our constitution and so he rightfully deserved to be booted out. -oOoCorona has been impeached. The next step is to charge him in court employing the same strong evidences used during the impeachment trial that eventually found him guilty and therefore was thrown out of office. He should therefore, at this point in time, simply prepare his defense during the hearings in the Sandigan Bayan to be scheduled soon. -o0oHis penchant in few occasions at prejudging the case in his favor via media interactions speaks clearly of a doubtful legal “expertise” he has between his ears. Is this not sub-judici?

THE NARROW DOOR; SALVATION AND REJECTION

THE NARROW DOOR

Gentle Jesus, meek and mild, never harming, always charming! Is he so? Perhaps it is the picture occasionally painted in a child’s Sunday school lesson, but it is not the exact picture of the historic Christ. Jesus threw so many hard teachings at his disciples. It is little wonder they got miffed. He once said, “If you try to save your life, it will slip through your fingers, but give it away, and you will find it.” In today’s Gospel he says, “Strive to enter by the narrow door” (Lk 13:24). What is a narrow door like? St Paul says to children: “Obey your parents” and “Honour your father and mother” (Eph 6:1). This requires on the part of the children humility and acceptance of discipline. That is children’s narrow door. He says to parents: “Do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (v.4). This requires on the part of the parents unselfish love and patience. That is their narrow door. Through such teachings, the Lord invades into our comfort zones. He tears aside the curtain of our easy-going consciences, and throws open the locked door, and if we do that, we can enter into new pastures of peace, and happiness. Sources from the MENRO said that the kasko and the remaining half log is still in the site, since it needs more than 20 persons to haul it from the land in traversing rough and muddy mountain trail.

An eatery named Dood’s Carinderia retains its crude interiors including the wall-painted liquor ments from 60 years ago. All the post-war buildings in the town center have not been altered and are in even in a state of near neglect, including the dilapidated wooden municipal hall and the rundown fire station complemented by a vintage fire truck. The town seems to have run in a standstill. Thanks to the St. Therese Diocesan Shrine, Calubian comes to life for two days as devotees flock here. The celebration this year began last Oct. 26 with a fluvial procession starting

past 2:00 pm at the town port. A motorized boat carrying the patron saint’s image led the flotilla of more than 10 vessels in sailing the calm Calubian Bay. Another miracle happened on the night of Oct. 10, 2009 when workers rushed to finish the expansion of the chapel to be used the following day for an important occasion. Work was snagged because the scissors for cutting galvanized steel was misplaced. The situation seemed hopeless when a dog approached the workers with a pair of ordinary scissors on his mouth. Somehow the workers managed to make do with the tool and finish the work on time. Naval State University President Edita Genzon who was the Hermana Mayor that time framed the miraculous scissors which is now displayed on her office wall. The Church teaches that the Lord works in unexpected ways, unimaginable circumstances and unlikely places. Based on a press statement issued by the DOE, the Energy Plan highlights the policy vision of an economy which will become largely decarbonized with the development and utilization of renewable energy – hydro, geothermal, solar, wind, biomass and ocean energy and with DOE taking the lead in promoting energy efficiency as a lifestyle, and advocating the use of alternative fuels for the transport sector. The DOE has also simulated the energy needs of the country over the next 20 years by con-

sidering factors such as a 10.0 percent target energy savings across all economic sectors – transport, industry, residential, commercial and agriculture; an increase in the number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-fed buses and possible introduction of CNG taxis, electric vehicles; and higher application of biofuel blends (biodiesel and bioethanol), the press statement added. Petilla said he would probably take his oath as the new DoE secretary on or before Nov. 5 after President Benigno S.C. Aquino III officially issues his appointment papers within the week. Petilla itted he will have to study carefully his new job but said he will prioritize the rising oil products prices and issues in the energy sector. “The first thing is to asses who are the players. They’re only three of them—those in the power generation, transmission and distribution. Along that line is a multi-sectoral environment where there are several problems that need to be addressed.
