• HIM professionals hold diverse roles such as organizational and corporate privacy officers, compliance officers, and risk managers, to name a few, and are change agents in policy development and maintenance

EHR • The proverbial walls of the HIM department are vanishing as the healthcare landscape changes, but there are many doors opening that need the HIM professional’s skills and expertise.
• While operations still demand continued focus on day-to-day activities like EHR implementation, coding, revenue cycle, privacy and security , and release of information (ROI) to name a few; health information exchange (HIE) and other emerging technologies and payment reform initiatives are rapidly changing how healthcare documentation will be created, managed and shared in the future.
CLINICAL DOCUMENTATION IMPROVEMENT
• HIM professionals hold diverse roles within the revenue cycle for their organizations and physician practices such as CDI Specialists, CDI Managers, Coding Professionals, and Revenue Cycle Auditor.

INFORMATION GOVERNANCE • HIM professionals are information managers, not just record managers. Information is coming into the organization from multiple sources; we need to ensure the information is accurate. No one else is looking at this
• HIM professional domains of expertise encom: 1) financial, 2) clinical and 3) legal/regulatory areas of knowledge needed by organizations to be able to analyze, interpret and create innovative solutions for our organizations. HIM professionals are able to navigate across all three areas which are CRITICAL for our organizations' success.
