Keystone library Renovation Alban Alba-Castillo 4/12/17 My hope for this project was to create a library that would be among if not the best library in the world. The building has plenty of space for all you book nerds. There is easy access for everyone equipped with a set of stairs and an elevator. The second floor has many computer areas and a green roof.
The green roof has tables and fountains for a relaxing experience.

Codes and Regulations Overview The building codes that apply to the keystone library are Fire and Building Safety Standards, Indiana Building code, Indiana Building Code Standards, Indiana Handicapped accessibility code. The building must have a minimum of two exits. The walls are made of concrete and brick. Concrete because of its durability and strength. Brick to add a nice and aesthetically pleasing look. The minimum lot size is ten thousand square feet and it cannot exceed six stories in height. I had to follow these constraints based on the local ordinances.
Building Design For my green roof the layers were made of sand, grass, fabric and earth. The layers for my roof are made of roofing EPDM membrane 1”, Insulation/thermal barriers 5”, Metal –Deck 2 ¾”. I decided to a flat roof since it would allow me to put a green roof. It will also allow me to put extra things there that would take up space. I decided to not put very many plants because I didn’t want too much loading on my roof. I still had to worry about snow load. The trees are so people could get fresh oxygen when there outside. The floors are different from residential floors since they have to hold more loads. When you walk in the library there is a children’s help area to the front and to the very back there is a mechanical room. To the right there is the librarians head office. To the left of that there are two meeting rooms. As you walk further back you will see book shelves and a few couches. In the very back on the right there is a history room with a couch.
For the second floor when you get out of the elevator you will see a bunch of computer stations. To the left there will be a public bathroom. When you turn around you can the green roof in all it beauty. There a bunch of tables and fountains and greenery.
Structural Design Based on the loading the joists I chose were 16K7 for all my interior joists and 18K3 for all my exterior joists. For my beams I chose wide flanged 18x35 I beams and for my girders I chose wide flanged 24x103 I beams. I chose these beams since they were able to hold the calculated dead and live load for this structure.
Internal shear control the design when there are more than simply a uniform load, for example, if there were point loads on top of a uniform load, internal shear would be dominant in the design. Limits on deflection of depth and weight per foot of the beam would cause an engineer to choose a beam that is not the most cost effective structural steel section.
Wastewater management I had to calculate the waste water for this library. I calculated the slope of the pipe to be eight point two percent. Which is good since the minimum slope for a pipe is two percent. There was no need for a septic tank since we don’t live in a rural area. You should glad we don’t a septic tank.
Conclusions Overall this library was very challenging and time consuming. I pleased with the finished product. Before this library there was an empty space, but now there an awesome structure for everyone to enjoy. The calculation were challenging but I am confident in my math skills. You have nothing to worry about when it come to the roof collapsing or the whole building just coming down on you. Nothing illegal was done all the regulations were followed. The material used are all safe and fireproof. I hope you one day get to see my library I am confident you will be pleased with what you
see.
