Jessie was enjoying the new bicycle he got for his birthday. He was so glad his daddy kept his promise. It was really fun riding his bike outside. But Jessie was not happy all of the time. Things changed in his family after the baby arrived.
Jessie’s mom was always caring for the baby, his dad’s new job kept him away from home, and Rachel was always out with friends. Jessie really missed all of the attention he once had, especially from his mom.
Jessie felt he was no longer the center of attention. It seemed like everyone loved the “Little Angel”, more. He loved his little sister too, but why did she have to have all of the attention.
One day Jessie was thinking how much he missed playing in the park with his mom and dad. Jessie found his mom and asked, “Mommy can we go to the park?” “You promised we could play every day that the weather was nice.”
“I know”, mom said. “I’ll find time a little later, ok”. Jessie felt so sad and lonely.
Jessie watched his mom put Pammie down for nap. He missed his mommy’s hugs and kisses at nap time.
This time his mom noticed he was sad. She began to think of something that would cheer him up. Suddenly! she had an idea.
“Jessie”, mom called, “I think I will probably need a little more help with the baby. Would you like to be mommy’s little helper?” “Oh! Yes mommy”, said Jessie. He was so excited. “You can help me after lunch and then we can all go to the park for a picnic” said mom.
Jessie felt really special. But what could he do to help his mom.
Jessie was right by his mom’s side ready to help. “Mommy can I help you now” “In a moment, Jess”, said mom. His mom smiled, “It is ok Jessie, we will find something for you to do”.
All day, Jessie was looking for ways to help his mom with the baby. He folded the baby’s blanket. Then, he put away her toys. And when he heard the baby cry, he brought her a bottle from the refrigerator. “Here’s Pammie’s bottle mom”, said Jessie. “Thanks Jess, but I think she just needs to be changed”, mommy said.
Jessie was so disappointed that he could not be very helpful, so he just went to his room to play. Later mom peeked in his room and found him asleep. She was so proud of what a big brother he had become, but she knew changing from the youngest in the family to a big brother was still hard for him to adjust to.
Later that afternoon, Jessie heard the baby crying. He knew his mommy was taking a nap and did not want to wake her. So, he went to see why she was crying.
“I can show mommy how helpful I can be”, he said. He wondered if she wanted a bottle. But he ed he could not give her a cold bottle and he could not warm it up for her.
He checked her diaper, but she was dry. He could not imagine what could be wrong. He thought and thought. “Maybe I can sing and rock her to sleep, just like mommy”, he said. “Mommy will be so proud of me”
Jessie tried to let down the bed rail, but it was too hard. He tried to climb in the bed, but it was too high. He placed a small chair by the bed and climbed up to the rail. When he leaned over the rail, he still could not reach her. Just then the chair fell over. Jessie was dangling on the side of the bed. Jessie was very high from the floor and was afraid of falling. But he had to be brave for his little sister.
“Please stop crying Pammie, I will help you” said Jessie. Jessie ed his mom said always pray when you are afraid. So he prayed, “Please God don’t let me fall.” Jessie hoped God would help him or he would not be able to hold on much longer.
Just when Jessie was beginning to fall, his foot touched the bottom of the rail.Jessie carefully climbed into the bed.
Jessie tried everything to help his little sister. Jessie worked so hard that he became sleepy himself.
So he laid down beside her with his bear. But one thing Jessie forgot to do was to pray, which he did every night with his parents.
Jessie was so happy he could sing to his sister like his mom and dad. Jessie yawned with almost every word he song. He was so tired, but he held her close to him singing to her until they both fell asleep.
When mom came in to check on Pammie, she found them both asleep. Mom was so happy that Jessie was adjusting to his sister a little more each day. He was a becoming a great Big brother.
As Jessie’s mom picked him up out of the bed, he slowly opened his eyes and said, “Hi mom, I put Pammie back to sleep for you, but.” Jessie’s excitement turned to a sad face. “I forgot to teach her my prayer before we went to sleep”.
“Oh that’s ok you will have plenty of time to teach her as Mommy’s Lil’ Helper”. Then his mom gave him a great big hug and a kiss. Jessie was so proud of himself and so was his mom.
