USCE- US Clinical Experience (Few recommendations) Many students get themselves confused in clinical electives, observerships and externships. Actually if you are still undergrad then clinical elective is the best opportunity one can avail. As i thought earlier that electives are costly to go for them, but it isn't the truth. Clinical electives are mostly affordable, easy to get, and has more hands on patient and working experience with hospital team thus more value of that LOR. Many hospitals in US also provide accommodation free of cost or at low cost for elective students. On the contrary, observerships or externship (its more a fancy name for observerships), are not that much easy to get, less hands on patient experience and one has to observe what physician is doing not more than this & mostly there is only one attending physician with whom you can work. Observerships are sometimes costly or sometimes free (if clinic based) and are more meant for graduate students. So if you have plans ahead for USMLE, my advise would be plan your CS exam and electives in final year combine and utilize this time during final year or just after final year, as you will still be undergrad till your result is out. When you will be spending thousands of dollars on whole process then few more hundred dollars and little good plan is the perfect investment for your endeavors. USMLE is also act smart process so undergrad pupils don't stuck in observerships meanwhile, if you are able to grab a good clinical elective then its worthy for you. Here is the link that i came across while searching clinical electives in US. Its a very comprehensive and resourceful stuff. If you are a medical student or an international medical graduate looking for electives, observerships, externships and research experience in US, we recommend that you consider visitingwww.medclerkships.com We understand that securing electives/Observerships at US medical schools can be a daunting task and over the last several years it has become incredibly competitive for international medical students and graduates to secure residency in US. In an attempt to help the international medical students and graduates, US Electives is collaborating withMedclerkships to help students find opportunities for US Clinical Experience. We encourage you to check it out. to sign up for free with the referal code "US Electives" for discount University list for International Medical Students This webpage will provide you a comprehensive list of all US based universities/medical schools where international medical students are eligible to apply for electives, if they meet the application requirements I have Categorized the University list into two groups: 1) Group A: Universities that offer electives to ALL international medical students regardless of affiliation. 2) Group B: Universities that offer electives to only those international medical students whose medical school have a formal affiliation with their institution The list has NOT been arranged inorder of Rank. Before you start to dig down into the list, you might want to take a look at the official list of Best US Hospitals and the University rank list based on Research by visiting the US news website. For every institution enlisted below: clicking the institute name will open up a new window to the official elective application webpage for that institution. Before you start, there are
some basic Principles that have general applicability, and must be taken into consideration before interpretating the information on institutes given below: 1- For all institutions enlisted below, if the visa type is not specified in requrements then it means that you can do an elective at that institute on B1 Visa or business visa. 2- For all institutions in New York State, you will be required to obtain New York State Eligibility letter as part of the application requirements ( usually after acceptance), even if its not specified. 3- Most elective periods are of 4 weeks duration, tuition fee is usually per 4 week elective, eg if you want to do x 2 four week electives where the tuition is $100 then you will have to pay $200 for two electives. Application fee on the other hand is constant and is a 'once only' fee regardless of the number of electives you do at the same institute. However many places still use 'application/tuition fee' interchangably, specific information will be provided of their website in every case. 4-Unless specified otherwise, the minimum requirements for malpractice insurance are $1million/$3million for most institutions that require it.
