Audience (Specific): Upper Class Americans Audience (General): Americans (general) Thesis (may be paraphrased): The rich people in the world can’t let their money get into bad hands, and must do everything in order to keep their wealth. Key Points (sum):(1) One should make sure their fortune is given to a responsible heir, to make sure the wealth in the family continues. (2) Wealthy men should be wise when dealing with money, and not frivolously spend of give their money away. It should only be for good cause. (3) Wealthy men should benefit the rest of the community by giving and spreading their wealth to charity.
What was the author's purpose?: The author’s purpose was to provide insight for wealthy people, and how to retain the wealth that they had worked for. It is basically saying that the money should be handled well when given away.
Effect (Did the author achieve his/her purpose? What happened as a result of this?): There are many possible outcomes of this document’s perception. But I bet that it was not well perceived by the poor because it talks about the wealthy remaining wealthy rather than distributing it totally.
Important ages/quotes: Such in my opinion is the true Gospel concerning Wealth, obedience to which is destined some day to solve the problem of the Rich and the Poor, and to bring "Peace on earth, among men good will." The first is the most injudicious. In monarchial countries, the estates and the greatest portion of the wealth are left to the first son, that the vanity of the parent may be gratified by the thought that his name and title are to descend to succeeding generations unimpaired. The condition of this class in Europe today teaches the futility of such hopes or ambitions.
Is this author credible? Why (not)?: Yes, due to the economic situation being experienced at the time this essay was written, the self-made wealthy was a big part of the economic way of life, and Carnegie’s insights are thoughtful.
What ideas presented in this document remind you of others we have studied? Give examples: This document reminds me of How the Other Half Lives because it talks about both spectrums of wealth in America, and how each should be recognized as parts of
American life.
Questions raised by the document: Did the poor/smaller businesses accept this document as the reality?
