Field Signals A section needs to communicate efficiently, effectively and quietly when on the move. While patrolling each cadet must be alert and move quietly so as to avoid detection by the enemy. Field signals are used to communicate vital information to section quietly. Each cadet must on the field signal to the cadet behind them and make sure that the cadet acknowledges the signal. Below are some of the field signals. A section commander can also indicate patrol signals not covered below to the at the briefing / orders to cover any eventuality that the patrol may find themselves in. It is important that each cadet looks out for signals, knows what each signal means, what to do when they see it, acknowledge it and it on. DEPLOY. Arm extended below shoulder level and waved slowly from side to side, hand open. If deployment to either flank is wanted, the commander points to the flank concerned, after completing the signal. DOUBLE. Hand moved up and down from the elbow with clenched fist GO BACK OR TURN ROUND. Hand circled at hip height ON ME. Hand placed on top of head, elbow square to the right or left, according to which hand is used. ENEMY SEEN OR SUSPECTED. Thumb pointed towards the ground from a clenched fist.
NO ENEMY IN SIGHT OR ALL CLEAR. Thumb pointed upwards from a clenched fist. ADVANCE OR FOLLOW ME. Arm swung from rear to front below the shoulder. HALT. Arm raised until the hand is level with the shoulder AS YOU WERE. Forearm extended downwards and open hand waved across the body parallel to the ground. LIE DOWN. Two or three slight movements with the open hand towards the ground (palm downwards) SECTION COMMANDER. Two open fingers held against arm indicates stripes.
DIAMOND. Arms raised above the head with arms slightly bent so that hands touch to form a diamond shape. MOVE UP. Fingers spread; arm swung slowly in direction movement is required. ARROWHEAD. Both arms forced backwards at an angle of 45°. If the Section Commander turns to face his section when making this signal he will extend his arms forward at the same angle.
SCOUT GROUP. Clenched fist with forefinger raised.
FREEZE AND LISTEN. Hand supped to ear. RIGHT/ LEFT FLANKING. A curved sweeping movement of the arm in the direction concerned.
SINGLE FILE. One arm fully extended above the head.
RECONNAISSANCE. Hand held to eye, as though using binos. FILE. Both arms fully extended above the head. ATTACK. A chopping movement with edge of hand in direction attack is required.
EXTENDED LINE. Arms raised to the side, level with the ground.
