Karla Reyes MM4B 1. Ethics is important in a business because it is the one governing the actions of the businessmen and the consumers. It is the one which we look up to when we do anything business related. It is the one which tells us the acceptable and the unacceptable in our dealings and transactions. It helps our moral reasoning and gives us a philosophical analysis of a situation. 2. “Ethics has no place at all in business” is not true because ethics is what makes a business functional and successful. Businesses tackle many forms of industry and different kinds of people. To be able to reach out to these people, a business should have work ethics. It is what separates them from a trustworthy to a bogus form of business. If a business has ethics in its workplace, they are one step closer to success. 3. “Not all that is legal is moral, but what is moral is worth legalizing.” This statement strikes me as a heavy declaration. It is true that not all that is legal is moral; an example would be abortion in the US. For them it is legal to kill a life that is growing in the womb of a mother which is immoral. The line what is moral is worth legalizing is true. It is moral to have a freedom for yourself to choose who you want to spend the rest of your life with, either with a girl or a boy and for me this is worth legalizing. Some might disagree with me but I am speaking with an open-mind with the issue presented. 4. Business Ethics is the study of what is the right and wrong human behaviour and conduct in business. For me, Business Ethics is a vital component of a business entity. It’s what helps employees, owners and consumer determine the right way to do their business without compromising the right of one another. It’s what governs their actions for the company to be able to grow and prosper. 5. “Ethics is the unwritten law written in the hearts of men”. This means that ethics cannot be only in written form but it can also be determined by anyone within himself/herself. If a situation does not feel right to someone then it means they are doing something unethical or immoral. We are the ones who can discern whether an act of others is right or wrong. 6. For me, Profit-Motive in a business is just natural. I agree that it is moral to want your business to give you profit because it is the nature of business, getting money. Profit is the motivational factor of a business. If there is no profit in a business, then the business is not productive, thus it should close. Profit is what the owners get back for their efforts and ideas. It’s the measure of the productivity of one’s company. 7. I disagree with his idea that the only responsibility of business is to just maximize profits. For me, there is also a responsibility of a business to give back to its

community. Like having outreach programs, donating to charities and offering employment to those who badly needs it. It is good for a business to earn but in turn, it should also mind its employees in of their health care, financial capacities and their wholeness as a human being. Their responsibility also includes uplifting moral norms. 8. The Catholic Church’s stand on profit-motive is not really negative. They are opposed to companies that makes profit the heart or the purpose of their business if the company generates it through good dealings and not through illegal means. 9. For me, reasonable profit is where the company generates its income without having a right of the consumers violated. It is where the consumers has their right being honoured and the company is not setting up unreasonable conditions or prices. The company is also establishing their business as they set their prices within the capacity of the people that consumes the product or service that they render.
