Drugs are chemical of macromolecular targets and produces a biological response When this biological response is therapeutic and useful chemical are called medicine. If taken in doses higher than those recommended, most of drugs become poisons. Chemotherapy :- Use of chemicals for therapeutic effect is called chemotherapy.
CLASSIFICATION Drugs are classified on the basis of – a) Pharmacological effect b) Drug action
c) Chemical structure d) Molecular targets
These type of drugs is classified on the basis of their pharmacological effect Example: analgesics having pain killing effect, Antiseptics kill or stop the growth of microorganisms
It is based on the action of a drug on a particular Biochemical process Example:- all antihistamine inhibit the action of compound, histamine which causes inflammation in the body
It is based on the chemical structure of the drug . Drugs classified in this way share common structural features. Example:- sulphonamides have common structural Features.
Drugs usually interact with biomolecules such as carbohydrates , lipids , proteins and nucleic acids. these are called target molecules or drug targets. This classification is based on these molecular targets
ENZYMES :- Proteins which perform the role of biological catalysts in the body are called enzymes . RECEPTORS:- Those enzymes which are crucial to communication system in the body are called receptors.
CARRIERS:- Protein carry polar molecules across the cell membrane.
