The Butter Battle Book By: Dr. Seuss Dr. Seuss wrote “The butter battle book” to show his view of the cold war. In the very beginning the grandfather Yook was telling his grandson all the bad things about the Nooks who live on the other side of the wall. This is like the propaganda that the US and the Soviet Union used to make the other side look bad. Also the Yooks had the people working in the background to develop more weapons to use in the dispute. On both sides of the wall the weapons that they were secretly developing were improving at the same speed. This is the same from in the cold war because The Soviet Union and The USA were secretly building atomic bombs at the same speed. When the two generals of the yooks and the nooks always were in a stalemate and had to retreat. Every time they would confront the other side would always one up the other. This continued until the Man in charge gave the general the ultimate weapon, the atomic bomb, or the big boy bomber, from the book. When they were facing each other the looked scared because they knew if they dropped the bomb then the other side would drop their bomb and result in mutually ensured destruction. In the end one could say that the nuclear proliferation is the thing the endured the safety of each side of the wall. If one side were to drop the bomb then the other would and it would end up destroying the entire species. That’s the way the book ended just like in the Cold war both sides, the US and The Soviet Union, didn’t send any of their bombs to the other side because they would be mutually ensured destruction. To me, after reading this book, I became blatantly clear that Dr. Seuss was a non-violent man. He thought that the nuclear proliferation is meaningless. Also he brought up the scandals that the governments are a part of, he did so by descriptions of the room in the back of the office where the yooks would secretly develop weapons. Mutually ensured destruction, I believe that if we didn’t have two sides of war with the same weapons, in regards to bombs, then I think the human race would’ve seized to exist many years ago; due to all of the radiation that would’ve been a result to blowing everyone up. At the very least we would be forced to move our civilization underground for a couple centuries. That is represented in the end of the book before the face off with the bombs, the yooks and nooks that weren’t a part of the military were put into underground bomb shelters, those very shelters would be the new homes of them. In the book both sides of the walls were fairly similar they all had similar educational systems and governmental systems. However they had one difference and that one difference is the thing that separated them the most. The Yooks thought that the right way to butter their bread was with the butter side up. However the Nooks thought that the bread was better butter side down. This is different to the US and the Soviet Union, we have a democratic system and government and the Soviets do not. This is one of the reasons why the cold war started. When
the Soviets were building the bombs then the US thought that they might use them to intimidate the other countries of the world. So, the US started the Manhattan project, this was when the US built bombs without the country knowing. That similar to the weapons the Yookeree would give the general to threaten the nooks.
