The Basics ofA V R Studio 4 This tutorialw illshow you the basics ofA V R C program m ing using A V R Studio 4. This guide w illshow you how to setup a project,insertsom e code, how to com pile it,how to sw itch to using the JTA G ,and som e basics on debugging.

Setting up a project 1.)O pen A V R Studio 4 Start! Program s ! A tm elA V R Tools ! A V R Studio 4 Y ou should then see this w indow :

2.)Click N ew Project 3.)SelectA V R G CC and entera projectnam e,placing itin an appropriate place (Z:\466 is show n here). Click N ext.

4.)SelectA V R Sim ulatoras yourD ebug platform and the A Tm ega16 as yourD evice. Click Finish.

5.)N extgo to Project! Configuration O ptions U nderthe G eneralTab m ake sure thatC reate H ex File,G enerate M ap File,and G enerate ListFile are checked

Inserting som e code and com piling it Com piling in A V R studio is easy. Firstenteryourcode then click the build button. Ifinform ation on the A V R m em ory doesn’tcom e up afterthe build, then the build probably failed.

Ifyou w antto change any ofthe com pile options,go to Project! Configuration O ptions Things like the optim ization flags and w hetherchars are signed orunsigned m ay be found in the G eneralTab. M ore specific com pile flags m ay be entered in the Custom O ptions Tab.

Setting up the JTA G To sw itch from Sim ulation to the JTA G ,follow these steps: 1.)From the m ain screen go D ebug ! SelectPlatform and D evice… 2.)SelectJTA G ICE orJTA G ICE m kIIdepending on w hich device you are using (look forthe labelon yourdevice)and A Tm ega16

3.)Click Finish.

U sing the JTA G to program the A Tm ega16 1.)Build yourproject 2.)Click the A V R button 7 buttons to the leftofthe Com pile button. It looks like this: 3.)This w indow should pop up:

Basics ofD ebugging D ebugging is the sam e w hetherin softw are orhardw are. The only difference is thatyou m ustselectyourdevice as eitherA V R Sim ulator (softw are),orJTA G ICE (orJTA G ICE m kII)(hardw are). The interface is m uch the sam e as V isualStudio orany otherdebugging interface you m ay have used. Y ou can setbreakpoints,add variables to a w atch list,etc. A V R Studio 4 has m any interactive debugging features.Forthe purposes of this class the tw o basic m ethods you w illuse to debug are the A V R Sim ulatorand the JTA G .A tthe bottom ofyourscreen A V R Studio displays w hatdevice/chip itw illinteractw ith w hen debugging and w hich debuggerit w illuse.Below is a picture ofthe Status Barshow ing thatthe device is an “A TM ega16” and the debug platform is the “A V R Sim ulator”.

To change the targetdevice fordebugging and/orthe debug platform go to the “D ebug” m enu and selectthe m enu option “Selectdevice and debug platform .” In this w indow you can selectA V R sim ulatorifyou w antto debug in sim ulation orifyou w antto debug directly on yourhardw are choose eitherJTA G ICE orJTA G ICE m kII(depending on w hich JTA G you have atyourstation).

The debuggerin A V R studio runs sim ilarto otherdevelopm ent environm ents.Besides the options in the debug m enu there is a toolbar (show n below ) to controlthe debugger.For m ore inform ation on how to controlthe debugger refer to the A V R Studio H elp M enu.

O ne ofthe m ostpow erfulfeatures ofthe debuggeris the ability to view the currentstates ofany ofthe s.Y ou can view the currentvalue ofany in the “I/O view ” tab.

A notherusefulfeature ofthe A V R Studio 4 debug system is the w atch w indow w hich allow s you to see w hatthe value any variable is in the RA M . To view the currentvalue ofa variable use,add the variable to the w atch w indow .
