EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The importance of Human Resource Management is being increasingly realized in industrial and non-industrial organization both in India and abroad. The realization has come about because of increasing complexity of tasks if managers and s. In most organizations the problem of getting the competent and relevant people, retaining them, keeping up their best to the organization, are now viewed as the critical problems. So with this reference the project related to the industrial visit for the study of the HR Practices has been conducted. We had visited Parle &HCL at Pant Nagar and APC at Udham Singh Nagar. We had concluded data from visits and tried to summarized in this project from primary research. It emphasizes on the importance of a clear cut organization structure and culture to avoid any confusion in order to achieve maximum results with minimum resources. The project report is aimed to cover maximum knowledge of HR Practices followed in organization and how the performance is evaluated of the employees, what primary factors are considered, how data is maintained and finally the evaluation done. Here the HR practices of the companies have being explained with their products profiles and competitors. The practical knowledge has been gained mainly by observing all the activities taking place in the HR department. This is a brief study done to enhance

understanding of the subject HR, how it is practically implemented, why it is necessary , its implications and benefits. PREFACE Human Resource Management is both an academic theory and a business practice that addresses the techniques of managing a workforce. The theoretical discipline is based on the assumption that employees are individuals with varying goals and needs, and as such should not be thought of as bonded labour or can be purchased at price. The field takes a positive view of employees and study of practices followed by organization to manage this intellectual capital to their maximum satisfaction, so that they can work to best of their ability. So, as a MBA student I must know the practical implication of concepts of Human Resource Management, IMS has given me this golden opportunity to meet this end, by means of this Project work. Project work consists of visit to the company and collecting the information about the practices being followed there, as an HR student my aim was to get a deep insight into HR functioning and to know about the vital role that HR department plays in functioning of other departments. I have done my Project from PARLE, HCL & APC India Pvt. Ltd., Rudrapur, as a requirement for the degree of MBA(HR&IR). I hope to provide relevant information about the various HR functions of the Organization in a nutshell by means of this report. PARLE HISTORY A long time ago, when the British ruled India, a small factory was set up in the suburbs of Mumbai city, to manufacture sweets and toffees. The year was 1929 and the market was dominated by famous international brands that were imported freely. Despite the odds and unequal competition, this company called Parle Products, survived and succeeded, by adhering to high quality and improvising from time to time. A decade later, in 1939, Parle Products began manufacturing biscuits, in addition to sweets and toffees. Having already established a reputation for quality, the Parle brand name grew in strength with this diversification. Parle Glucose and Parle Monaco were the first brands of biscuits to be introduced, which later went on to become leading names for great taste and quality.

Apart from being the world's largest selling biscuit, Parle - G is winner of 8 Gold and 11 Silver awards at the Mond Selection Awards – the global standard for quality in Food category.

Be it a big city or a remote village of India, the Parle name symbolizes quality, health and great taste! This can be seen by the success of new brands, such as, Hide & Seek, or the single twist wrapping of Mango bite. The Quality Commitment Parle Products has one factory at Mumbai that manufactures biscuits & confectioneries while another factory at Bahadurgarh, in Haryana manufactures biscuits. Apart from this, Parle has manufacturing facilities at Neemrana, in Rajasthan and at Bangalore in Karnataka. The factories at Bahadurgarh and Neemrana are the largest such manufacturing facilities in India. Parle Products also has 14 manufacturing units for biscuits & 5 manufacturing units for confectioneries, on contract.

All Parle products are manufactured under the most hygienic conditions. Great care is exercised in the selection & quality control of raw materials, packaging materials & rigid quality standards are ensured at every stage of the manufacturing process. Every batch of biscuits & confectioneries are thoroughly checked by expert staff, using the most modern equipment. The Marketing Strength Parle brand have found their way into the hearts and homes of people all over India & abroad. Parle has more than 3000 wholesalers, catering to 4, 25,000 retail outlets. There are 31 depots and C&F agents supplying goods to the nation wide distribution network The extensive distribution network, built over the years, is a major strength for Parle Products. Parle biscuits & sweets are available to consumers, even in the most remote places and in the smallest of villages with a population of just 500. Parle has nearly 1,500 wholesalers, catering to 4, 25,000 retail outlets directly or indirectly. A two hundred strong dedicated field force services these wholesalers & retailers. Additionally, there are 31 depots and C&F agents

Most Parle offerings are in the low & mid-range price segments. This is based on our cultivated understanding of the Indian consumer psyche. The value-for-money positioning helps generate large sales volumes for the products.

PARLE G - THE EVOLUTION!!! Parle-G has been a strong household name across India. The great taste, high nutrition, and the international quality, makes Parle-G a winner. No wonder, it's the undisputed leader in the biscuit category for decades. Parle-G is consumed by people of all ages, from the rich to the poor, living in cities & in villages. While some have it for breakfast, for others it is a complete wholesome meal. For some it's the best accompaniment for chai, while for some it's a way of getting charged whenever they are low on energy. Because of this, Parle-G is the world's largest selling brand of biscuits. Launched in the year 1939, it was one of the first brands of Parle Products. It was called Parle Glucose Biscuits mainly to cue that it was a glucose biscuit. It was manufactured at the Mumbai factory, Vile Parle and sold in units of half and quarter pound packs. The incredible demand led Parle to introduce the brand in special branded packs and in larger festive tin packs. By the year 1949, Parle

Gluco biscuits were available not just in Mumbai but also across the state. It was also sold in parts of North India. By the early 50s, over 150 tonnes of biscuits were produced in the Mumbai factory. Looking at the success of Parle-G, a lot of other me-too brands were introduced in the market. And these brands had names that were similar to Parle Gluco Biscuits so that if not by anything else, the consumer would err in picking the brand. This forced Parle to change the name from Parle Gluco Biscuits to ParleG. Originally packed in the wax paper pack, today it is available in a contemporary, BOPP pack with attractive side fins. The new airtight pack helps to keep the biscuits fresh and tastier for a longer period. Parle-G was the only biscuit brand that was always in short supply. It was heading towards becoming an all-time great brand of biscuit. ParleG started being d in the 80's. It was d mainly through press ads. The communication spoke about the basic benefits of energy and nutrition. In 1989, Parle-G released its Dadaji commercial, which went on to become one of the most popular commercials for Parle-G. The commercial was run for a period of 6 years. Parle-G grew bigger by the minute. Be it the packs sold, the areas covered or the number of consumers. It became a part of the daily lives of many Indians. It wasn't a biscuit any more. It had become an icon. The next level of communication associated the brand with the positive values of life like honesty, sharing and caring.

In the year 1997, Parle-G sponsored the tele-serial of the Indian superhero, Shaktimaan that went on to become a huge success. The personality of the superhero matched the overall superb benefits of the brand. Parle extended this association with Shaktimaan and gave away a lot of merchandise of Shaktimaan, which was ed by POS and press communication. The children just could not get enough of Parle-G and Shaktimaan. In the year 2002, it was decided to bring the brand closer to the child who is a major consumer. A national level promo - `Parle-G Mera Sapna Sach Hoga' was run for a period of 6 months. The promo was all about fulfilling the dreams of children. There were over 5 lakh responses and of that, over 300 dreams were fulfilled. Dreams that were fulfilled ranged from trips to Disneyland at Paris & Singapore; meeting their favorite film star Hrithik Roshan; free ride on a chartered plane; 20 scholarships worth Rs 50,000; a special cricket coaching camp with the Australian cricketer – Ricky Ponting; etc.

The year 2002 will go down as a special year in Parle-G's advertising history. A year that saw the birth of G-Man - a new ambassador for Parle-G. Not just a hero but also a super-hero that saves the entire world, especially children from all the evil forces. A campaign that is not just new to the audiences but one that involves a completely new way of execution that is loved by children all over the world - Animation.

A TV commercial that showed G-Man saving the children from the evil force called Terrolene launched this campaign. It was also ed by print medium through posters and streamers put up at the retail outlets. GMan, a new superhero of Parle-G has the potential of making it big. And will be ed by a campaign that will see many a new creative in the future so as to keep the children excited and generate pride in being a consumer

of

Parle-G.

To make the brand much more interesting and exciting with children, it was decided to launch a version of Parle-G called Parle-G Magix in the year 2002. Parle-G Magix is available in two exciting tastes ‘Choco’ and ‘Cashew’. The year 2002 also witnessed the launch of ParleG Milk Shakti, which has the nourishing combination of milk and honey, especially launched for the southern market. Parle-G continues to climb the stairs of success. Take a look at the global market where it is being exported. First came the Middle East then USA followed by Africa and then Australia. An Indian brand, that's exported to almost all parts of the world. After all that's what you would expect from the Parle-G World's Largest Selling Biscuit. However, Parle Products also manufactures a variety of products for the up-market, urban consumers. And in this way, caters a range of products to a variety of consumers.

 The time spent by a customer for picking up a product from a retail outlet is a few seconds; therefore a package should appeal to a customer within such a small interval of time. In this, both packaging & labeling play an important role in attracting customers both visually & psychologically.  For Parle G: Parle G was initially recognized by its iconic white and yellow stripped wax paper wrapper with the baby face on it. Many competitors have tried to sell their lower quality products by copying the packaging, trying to sell their biscuits as Parel-G; Parle-Jee etc. Due to increasing competition Parle G now uses plastic wrappers for its packaging. Parle-G comes in 8 different sizes: 25gms, 44gms, 93.5gms, 231gms, 340.5gms, 462gms, 577.5gms and a 1kg pack just for Rs.30 which is not usually offered by other brands.  Parle Hide & Seek: It initially came out with 3 variants: Mint, Orange & Chocolate which wasn’t accepted by the masses. However, the production of Mint & orange flavors was stopped. Chocolate is the only flavor that is running successfully since it is India’s first chocolate chip biscuit. . Hide & seek biscuit's current packaging has been modified along with lower prices & better affordability rates. Thus there is a change in size of the product which is prevalent in the ads. One of the ments shows movie actor, Hrithik Roshan walking with a pack of hide & seek biscuits in the back pocket of his jeans emphasizing on the small size of the product.

 Parle hide & seek Milano: This product of Parle has a flashy purple coloured packing which attracts customers with the whole look of Italian chocolate chip cookies.  As in all other biscuits, packing plays an important role in Parle-G too. The basic small packs are packed mechanically using automated machines and are sealed using the Polly bag sealing machine. These small packs are then manually packed into small boxes and are sent through the conveyor belt to be packed in large cartons. 160 packets are packed per minute. And in one big box there are 160 Parle-G packets packed. Before, they used to bring the packaging material from outside

the

company but now it is produced in the factory premises itself. For export purpose the packets have different languages print on them depending upon the geographical location & demand of the people. Each factory has state-of-the-art machinery with automatic printing & packaging facilities. Labeling:  Consumers are becoming increasingly health conscious. So it is essential to display the contents of every product. Every packet of Parle G, Parle hide & seek, Parle hide & seek Milano has information about the ingredients used, nutrition facts, mailing & emailing addresses asking for , phone number, packaging

date etc. All this along with the brand name and directions are printed in Hindi too.   Pricing Strategies  The Parle marketing philosophy emphasizes catering to the masses. It constantly endeavors at deg products that provide nutrition & fun to the common man. Most Parle offerings are in the low & mid-range price segments. This is based on its cultivated understanding of the Indian consumer psyche. The value-for-money positioning helps generate large sales volumes for the products.  Parle G has adopted the Market Penetration strategy i.e. low price along with capturing of a large market Also they focus on low prices and provide good quality products at the same time, which means it uses the value pricing method. This benefits Parle G by having a competitive edge in of large market share which is around 40%: both rural and urban presently.  For setting the price of Parle hide & seek biscuit, a survey was taken in the urban & semi-urban markets; on the basis of which hide & seek was introduced. It was found that the potential consumers were ready to pay a price for an innovative product like chocolate chip biscuits. Thus, Parle adopted market skimming where the product is high priced and also of high quality. It includes the cost

of

chocolates,

packaging & other processing cost. All these show customer status, which is also one of the reasons for parle hide & seek’s high price.

 A separate example for explaining the pricing strategy of Parle is its product Parle Creams For this product Parle uses going rate method only as a reference rate. In this case, Parle Creams were introduced after Britannia’s Cream Treats with similar variants but at Rs.5 per packet of biscuit and not Rs.10 like that of Britannia’s cream treats. • Should emphasise more on human labour than on machines. • Provision should be made for first-aid and dispensary. • Focus should be paid on workers more participation. • Workers should be motivated. • More focused should be paid on quality of product.

PERSONNEL ISTRATION DEPARTMENT The personnel istration department designs all the policies, rules and procedures relating aspects of HRM and is intended to serve as a basis fro the effective and uniform implementation of this across the entire organization. In other words it is just managing the people by personnel policy. A personnel department has four divisions: 1. Establishment – The establishment division deals with all the activities relating to recruitment, promotion, performance appraisals, transfer policy, retirement. Classification of employees: Full Time Employee (FTE) - Is the one who is on regular payrolls of company & entitled for all the benefits extended by the company Temporary Employee – is the one who may work either on a full or part-time schedule but are usually hired for a specific project or for a finite period of time. Probationer – Is the one, who is hired to fill the vacancy of Permanent Position. FEATURES OF HCL RUDRAPUR PLANT

The new HCL facility has installed several state-of-the-art processes as well as advanced testing techniques. These ensure that the various products coming out from HCL assembly line are uniquely equipped to face any challenging & extreme operating situations, which are often witnessed in Indian hinterlands. Some of these initiatives include:  

Components -These are especially sourced and tested for their tolerance towards temperature, humidity & heat. Special wireless LAN-based Reliability tests - which tests each component of the PC both individually as well as in an integrated manner for a continuous period of 4 hours Extreme Temperature tests - Specifically created environmental chambers which tests PCs for effective operations within a temperature range of 0o centigrade to 40o centigrade and at humidity range of 95%. Drop tests - Tests in which computers are dropped from a height of around 5 feet to test their handling reliability. Several other tests, which include ESD test, Earth Leakage test and others.

Further still, HCL also demonstrated the unique 'Build-to-order' (BTO) capabilities of the manufacturing plant pioneered by it thirty years ago which enables HCL to manufacture & design ICT products with specific configurations - customized to suit the needs of particular customers, in a matter of just few hours! Bringing it alive during the plant tour, HCL exhibited - how some specific orders, received by the plant were shipped within 24 hrs. The plant is networked & online with HCL branch and head offices. But if you competit with your competitor they company has to produce 100% accuracy not less than this.  Need to expend Customer care center with trained executives  Attention should be paid for ment.  Need to innovate some attractive design because today youth likes material that is attractive. Here company should take some suitable action.

Personal experience In MBA(HR & IR) course industrial visit plays very important role, because it gives the practical exposure and real interaction with organization. Here we know actually how the Organization works and whatever we pursuing in our course material, how efficiently we utilize in real world. We can analyze that what we learn in our collage how it is used practically in industry. We Visited an HCL plant Rudrapur it’s the Desktop PC are assembling unit. This industrial visit provides an Insight on how Company (Big and Small) work also useful information related to the Course which cannot be visualized in Lectures, Such as the Mechanical testing Machine or assembly line. How they assemble the PC Practically. It never be seen in the books However this did not seem quite obvious at the Beginning of the Trip.  It was the best experience for me to visit industry like HCL at Rudrapur in Uttaranchal. HCL has already a brand name in the IT field. It was the first time when we aware about any production process. How spares comes from outside I mean from suppliers and how very efficiently they assemble that part very easily. We saw the cold store where the motherboard kept at zero degree temperature. After visited the cold store we move on Assembly line .It is the unique feature among all the desktop mfg. companies.  There I saw ‘what the team management in actual’ and the very interesting process I saw during the visit that how they make efficient to do any particular work within the time. It was the good example of assembly line. Some time they use machine in place of machines at a peak season when the demand is very high because it is very costly to use the machines robots at every time. We can say

that without the team building we can’t achieve any task with efficiently. There I also saw that was performance appraisal that was pasted on notice board of that plant. There are so many parameter on that basis of the appraise the employee. And the atmosphere of that company was also good. One thing I was also seen that they use SAP software for feeding their data .HCL give training time to time to their employees. After going this visit I know that HCL is the selling partner of NOKIA. Only HCL have right to sale this product in India. We also visit the control room where they load the output and input computer boxes. They assemble the Pc as per the requirement of customers. First they load all the information’s regarding their customers in specific location. The first thing that I noticed as I entered the building of HCL.We saw all the employees engaged in their work and they are well experienced in their work.HCL hire fresher’s also which are mostly from technical background & they provide training. It was a friendly company where we got a warm welcome and their workers did not stop their work while we visit the assembly line they was focus only their goal. After visiting the plant we came back to reception area and then they gives us from regarding the industrial visit .after giving the we move to conference hall after waiting some time in conference hall the HR manager came and first they was introduce yourself and give a brief lecture on HCL and their wide network. Before visit the plant of HCL I know only HCL is deal only IT but after visit the plant & lecture of HR we realize that HCL has a wide network & it deals in different segments also.Mr. Sagar jayanti (HR Person) is a well experienced & knowledgeable person. He is a brilliant person. When we ask the questions to Mr. Sagar he replied very smartly. He taught that HCL has a wide network & 15% Turnover of HCL came from the HCL Technology and 75% came from HCL group & rest from their three business:Finally it was good experience to visit HCL Rudrapur. And I hope whatever I gain there that all related to our study part and hope this experience will help in future. And this trip gives me opportunity to

interaction with those friends with whom I never interact. Before the trip I was so worry but I was enjoyed this educational trip a lot.

Human Resource management is evolving rapidly. HRM is seen by practitioners in the field as a more innovative view of workplace management than the traditional approach. As

such, HRM techniques, when properly practiced, are expressive of the goals and operating practices of the enterprise overall. HRM is also seen by many to have a key role in risk reduction within organizations. Synonyms such as personnel management are often used in a more restricted sense to describe activities that are necessary in the recruiting of a workforce, providing its with payroll and benefits, and istrating their work-life needs. So if we move to actual definitions, Torrington and Hall (1987) define personnel management as being: “a series of activities which: first enable working people and their employing organizations to agree about the objectives and nature of their working relationship and, secondly, ensures that the agreement is fulfilled". While Miller (1987) suggests that HRM relates to: ".......those decisions and actions which concern the management of employees at all levels in the business and which are related to the implementation of strategies directed towards creating and sustaining competitive advantage" The goal of human resource management is to help an organization to meet strategic goals by attracting, and maintaining employees and also to manage them effectively. The key word here perhaps is "fit", i.e. an HRM approach seeks to ensure a fit between the management of an

organization’s employees, and the overall strategic direction of the company (Miller, 1989). Human resources management comprises several processes. Nature of HRM Simply put, Human Resource Management (HRM) is a management function that helps managers to recruit, select, train and develop for an organization. Obviously, HRM is concerned with the people's dimension in organizations. Following are few definitions of HRM:

In the case of Parle-G brand, the researcher found that it’s the taste, which contributed towards the customers brand loyalty. Parle-G’s long presence in the market didn’t have much impact on the consumers brand choice,

rather it was the taste that deferred customers from switching to the other brands of glucose biscuits. The Parle-G customers are not against consuming the Tiger brand provided they get the same quality taste as that of the Parle-G brand. They pointed out that the Tiger brand has a little lower milky taste and is a little sweeter than it should be. Thus, the company must maintain the price and concentrate on the brand taste to take maximum advantage of this opportunity. Also, marketing efforts are required to make the consumers aware of the brand’s price and make them more of nutrition-conscious so that they can understand the ‘Glucose HForce Biscuit’ concept.
