CHAPTER 1 AN INTRODUCTION TO STAROFFICE WRITER

StarOffice is an application that is designed work on different operating systems.

StarOffice is a full-featured office productivity suite with powerful standalone applications that can also open, edit, and save Microsoft Office documents. Whether you are writing a letter, performing

complex calculations, creating a presentation, or creating a database.

Listed below are some of the StarOffice functions

Create text document using StarOffice Writer Create spreadsheets using StarOffice Calc Create presentations using StarOffice impress Draw using StarOffice Draw Create a database using StarOffice Base

Writer :word processing software for working with text documents.

 Calc: spreadsheet software.  Impress: multimedia presentation software .  Draw: drawing software for diagrams and illustrations. Database: Tools, for day-to-day database work in simple spreadsheet-like form.  On the taskbar, click the Start button.  Choose All Programs→→ →→ → StarOffice 8 folder. Click the StarOffice program that you want to start

Creating a New Document Using StarOffice Writer The File →→ New →→ Text Document command can then be used to open a new document

Once a new document is opened, the text of the document can be typed in big blank area of the screen

Understanding File Menu New: Used to create a new file. Open: Used to open an existing file from a floppy disk or hard drive of your computer. Close: Used to close a file.  Save: Used to save a file after making changes. If you close the text document without saving, all of your changes will be lost.  Save As: Used to save a new file for the first time or save an existing file with a different name. Save All: Used to save all open files when you make changes to them.

Saving, Closing and Opening Documents

Saving a Document Press Control+S. Select File > Save. Click the Save button on the main toolbar.

When the Save As dialog box appears, enter the file name and the file type (if applicable). To save an open document with the current file name, choose File > Save. This will overwrite the last saved state of the file

Closing a Document Press Control-W  Select File > Close After a document is saved, it is not closed. It remains open so that the can continue working. When the work is finished, the should save and close the document.  After saving, the document can be closed using the File→→ Close command.

Opening a Document Select File > Open Ctrl+O In the file chooser, select the type of file you are looking for Text documents as the file type, you will only see

documents Writer understands. Select the file you want, then click Open.

Working with Multiple Documents Click on the window menu option. Click on the new window. Select the new openoffice writer. Select icon button on Untitled1 (or) Untitled 1:2 – openoffice writer. These documents can be closed one by one by using . File→ close window. Ctrl+w.

Scrolling The Document To scroll left and right the left and right arrow respectively

should be clicked. To scroll up and down the up and down arrow respectively should be clicked.

 To scroll a relative distance in the document the scroll box should be drawn up or down. If there are several pages in the document the can know the current page number by looking at the pop-up page number that appears next to the scroll bar.

Correcting Mistakes All the characters, which are typed, appear on the screen. If a mistake is identified it can be corrected either using the Backspace key or the Delete key. Backspace key deletes the characters to the left of the insertion point. Delete key deletes the characters to the right of the insertion point.

Inserting Text The is in the type-over mode, if the text existing to the right of insertion point disappears, while typing a new text. The can toggle between type-over mode and the insert mode by using the Insert key. The status bar gives the information about the current mode (Insert or Type-over-mode). Inserting text is the ability to place your cursor (with your mouse or arrow keys) at any location in your document and begin typing. The insert text function allows you to add characters to your document without overwriting the work you have previously done.

Selecting Text

. Selecting is the process of highlighting text or picking an object. For example, a may select text to copy, cut, or move that text to an alternate location or select a file they want to view. If something is selected, you can deselect text or another object by clicking somewhere else on the screen

Selecting Text with Mouse Selecting text is a common task in Word. You can use the mouse to highlight textby dragging the cursor over it, but that can be tedious and a bit cumbersome — and fortunately, unnecessary To select a word, double-click it. To select a single line of text, click in the left margin next to the line

Alternatively, click twice in the left margin next to the paragraph. To select the entire document, click three times in the left margin.

Selecting Text with Keyboard To select everything from the current position of the text cursor to the start or end, press Shift+Ctrl+Home

The Shift key is pressed down and the movement keys are used to highlight the required text

Moving the Text  The

text to be moved to a new location is selected.  Edit →→ Cut is selected or in the tool bar is selected to cut the selected text.  Insertion point is moved to the place where the text is to be pasted.  Edit →→ Paste is selected or in the tool bar is selected to paste the text in the new location. The text can also be pasted in this way to another or another type of document.

Finding and Replacing Text Writer has a Find and Replace feature that automates the process of searching for text inside a document. In addition to finding and replacing words and phrases, you can:

Use wildcards and regular expressions to fine-tune a search. Find and replace specific formatting. Find and replace paragraph styles. To display the Find & Replace dialog box, use the keyboard shortcut Control+F or select Edit > Find & Replace. Type the text you want to find in the Search for box. To replace the text with different text, type the new text in the Replace with box. You can select various options such as matching the case, matching whole words only, or doing a search for similar words. (See below for some other choices.) When you have set up your search, click Find. To replace text, click Replace instead.
