AM VOLTAGE DISTRIBUTION • Unmodulated carrier can be described mathematically as Vc(t) = Ec sin(2π fct) • Instantaneous amplitude of the modulated wave can be expressed as Vam(t) = [Ec + Em sin(2π fmt)][sin(2π fct)] • Em = m Ec, Vam(t) = [Ec + m Ec sin(2π fmt)][sin(2π fct)]

AM VOLTAGE DISTRIBUTION • Factoring Ec, Vam(t) = [1 + m sin(2π fmt)][Ec sin(2π fct)] [1 + m sin(2π fmt)] – constant + modulating signal [Ec sin(2π fct)] – unmodulated carrier

AM VOLTAGE DISTRIBUTION • Multiplying, Vam(t) = [Ec sin(2π fct)] + [m sin(2π fmt)][Ec sin(2π fct)]

• Therefore, Vam(t) = [Ec sin(2π fct)] – (m Ec/2)cos[2π(fc+fm)t] + (m Ec/2)cos[2π(fc-fm)t]
