This method enables you to break a tune down into "key centers" that then  tell  you  what  major  scales  can  be  used  for  material  to  create  solos  with.  Trying to solo over a jazz tune by thinking in  of "what scale fits with  each chord" and going from chord to chord is impossible. There are just too  many changes happening too quickly. (Believe me, I tried to do it that way  for  years  and  had  all  but  given  up  on  ever  being  able  to  play  jazz  until  I  discovered the method I am about to outline here.)    What  you  have  to  do  is  break  the  tune  down  into  2,  4,  8,  or  even  16  bar  chunks and determine the "key center" for each of these sections. That way  a complex tune with a lot of modulations can be broken down to the point  where you might have say only 3 or 4 different major scales that you need  to be aware of.    Now any decent jazz musician is going to want to do a lot more than just  play  major  scales  over  the  changes.  (Though  it  is  a  sign  of  a  real  genius  when  someone  can  take  something  as  overused  and  commonplace  as  a  major scale and still come up with something fresh and new.) But knowing  what major scales can be used with a tune and what sections of that tune  they apply to gives you a foundation to proceed from.    This eliminates a lot of confusion and gives you a starting point. This is why  you study jazz theory or any kind of music theory. For an example, lets use  the tune "All The Things You Are". I have boiled it down to only the most  basic changes for the purposes of illustration, so if you are familiar with the  tune and find a couple of chords missing‐that is me simplifying things.  The complete chord progression goes like this:    First 8 bars we'll call A.  //section 1//Fminor7th / Bbminor7th / Eb7th /Abmaj7th /Dbmaj7th  //section 2//Dminor7th, G7th / Cmaj7th / Cmaj7th.    Second 8 bars we'll call A'.  //section 1//Cminor7th / Fminor7th / Bb7th / Ebmaj7th / Abmaj7th  //section 2//Aminor7th,D7th / Gmaj7th / Gmaj7th    Third 8 bars we'll call B. 

//section 1//Aminor7th / D7th / Gmaj7th / Gmaj7th  //section 2//F#minor7th / B7th / Emaj7th / Emaj7th    Fourth 12 bars we'll call A''.  //section 1//Fminor7th / Bbminor7th / Eb7th / Abmaj7th / Dbmaj7th  //section 2//Gb7th / Cminor7th / Bdim7th  //section 3//Bbminor7th / Eb7th / Abmaj7th / Abmaj7th    With out any explanation of how I arrived at this, here is my analysis:    Section A1 is vi, ii, V, I, IV in the key of Ab. You can use the Ab major scale.  Section A2 is ii, V, I, I in the key of C. You can use the C major scale.  Section A'1 is vi, ii, V, I, IV in the key of Eb. You can use the Eb scale.  Section A'2 is ii, V, I, I in the key of G. You can use the G scale.  Section B1 is ii, V, I, I in the key of G. You can use the G scale.  Section B1 is ii, V, I, I in the key of E. You can use the E scale.  Section A''1 is vi, ii, V, I, IV in the key of Ab. You can use the Ab scale.  Section A''2 is a transition and does not fit. Here you want to rely on chord  and ing tones for your soloing. Section A''3 is ii, V, I, I in Ab. You can use  the Ab scale.  So  what  this  all  this  jazz  theory  means  to  you,  the  performer,  is  that  you  need  to  know  the  Ab,  C,  Eb,  G,  and  E  major  scales  well  and  be  able  to  transition from one to the other easily to be able to solo over the tune.    You can set up practice routines based on this data that will teach you how  to hear the changes and "conceive" solos that are based on the structure of  the whole tune instead of jumping from one chord to the next.    How  do  you  determine  a  key  center" or come to a rest point, even if  it is only for one measure. There you will find a V7 to I or V7 to i.    In the case of A, section 1 you'll see that there is an Eb7th resolving to an  Abmaj7th,  that's  V7  to  I  in  the  key  of  Ab.  Look  at  the  chords  surrounding  that  and  you'll  see  that  they  all  fit  nicely  into  the  Basic  Harmonic  Vocabulary for Ab major.   

As  long  as  you  are  dealing  with  standards  and  mainstream  jazz  this  methods  works  pretty  well.  Like  everything  else  in  music,  there  are  a  million exceptions but I have found that about 80% of the time this method  gives an accurate enough picture of the structure of a tune for the purposes  of improvising over it or arranging it.   

Analysis of “All The Things You Are” ‐ Introduction    “All The Things You Are” is a great jazz standard that includes a couple of  dozen different chords so it is more challenging than a tune like “Autumn  Leaves.” Even though it is more complicated, it can be simplified somewhat  by  the  use  of  “bracketing.”  Bracketing  means  the  use  of  a  single  scale  to  improvise over two or more chords. You will see how only 9 or 10 scales are  needed to improvise on this tune in its simplest form.    The  form  of  the  tune  is  roughly  AABA  but  there  are  some  interesting  variations. First, the second A section is identical to the first but in the key a  perfect  5th  higher.  The  first  five  bars  of  the  last  A  section  are  identical  to  the first A but the rest is different and there is an extension resulting in the  last A section being 12 measures long instead of 8. So, unlike the standard  32 bar AABA tune, this is a somewhat unusual 36 bar AABA tune!    Analysis of “All The Things You Are” ‐ The 1st A Section    The chord progression is as follows:    /Fmi7 /Bbmi7 /Eb7 /Abma7 /Dbma7 /G7 /Cma7 /Cma7/     The first five chords are all in the same key, F Natural Minor or Ab Major.  The last three measures are in the key of C Major. So you may use an Ab  Major  scale  over  the  first  five  measures  and  a  C  Major  scale  over  the  last  three.  This  approach  will  give  the  strongest  sound  of  the  two  keys!  Using  chromatic  embellishment  or  altered  scales  may  add  interest  but  actually  causes  the  keys  to  be  less  obvious.  I  will  discuss  a  more  complicated  approach  later  but  more  complicated  is  not  necessarily  better,  it’s  just  more complicated!     

Analysis of “All The Things You Are” ‐ The 2nd A Section    The chord progression is as follows:    /Cmi7 /Fmi7 /Bb7 /Ebma7 /Abma7 /Ami7 D7 /Gma7 / Gma7 /     Similar to the 1st A section, the first five chords are all in the same key, C  Natural  Minor  or  Eb  Major.  The  last  three  measures  are  in  the  key  of  G  Major. So you may use an Eb Major scale over the first five measures and a  G  Major  scale  over  the  last  three.  This  approach  will  give  the  strongest  sound  of  the  two  keys!  Again,  this  progression  could  be  made  more  complicated and that will be discussed later.    Analysis of “All The Things You Are” ‐ The B section    The chord progression is as follows:    /Ami7 /D7 /Gma7 /Gma7 /F#mi7 /B7 /Ema7 /C7+5 /     The bridge is mainly II ‐ V ‐ I in two keys, G Major and E Major. So you may  play a G Major scale for 4 bars and an E Major scale for 3 bars. E Major is a  less  common  jazz  key  so  it  may  require  extra  practice!  The  last  measure,  C7+5  requires  a  scale  that  will  prepare  the  return  to  F  Minor.  The  best  choices would be the 5th mode of F Harmonic Minor or the C Super Locrian  scale  (C#  Melodic  Minor).  Both  scales  include  notes  in  the  F  Minor  key  signature and, more importantly, the Ab melody note! A whole tone scale  could  be  used  but  it  has  an  unaltered  9th  which  gives  the  C7  more  of  a  major sound.    Analysis of “All The Things You Are” ‐ The Last A section    The chord progression is as follows:    /Fmi7  /Bbmi7  /Eb7  /Abma7  /Dbma7  /Dbmi7  /Cmi7  /Bo7  /Bbmi7  /Eb7  /Abma7 /GØ C7‐9 /     Similar to the 1st A section, the first five chords are all in the same key, F 

Natural  Minor  or  Ab  Major.  So  Ab  Major  is  the  scale  to  use.  The  Dbmi7  should be a Dorian scale (Cb Major) and the Cmi7 should also be a Dorian  scale (Bb Major). The B diminished 7th should use the W ½ diminished scale  ‐ W ½ W ½ W ½ W ½. The next three measures are a II ‐ V ‐ I in Ab Major  and use an Ab Major scale. The last measure is a II ‐ V progression leading  back to the Fmi7 at the beginning. The best choice is an F Harmonic Minor  scale which will fit both chords!      Analysis of “All The Things You Are” ‐ A more complex approach!    Potentially you could assign a different scale sound to each chord but some  chords still require certain sounds to sound “normal.” Here is a summary of  scale possibilities:   Fmi7 ‐ Aeolian (Ab Major) or Dorian (Eb Major) Bbmi7 ‐  IImi7 requires Bb Dorian (Ab Major) Eb 7 ‐ the largest variety of choices, any  dominant  7th  scale  (except  Minor  Blues) Abma7  ‐  Ab  Major  or  Ab  Lydian  (Eb Major) Dbma7 ‐ IV function requires Lydian (Ab Major) G7 ‐ the largest  variety  of  choices,  any  dominant  7th  scale  (except  Minor  Blues) Cma7  ‐  C  Major  or  C  Lydian  (G  Major) Cmi7  ‐  Aeolian  (Eb  Major)  or  Dorian  (Bb  Major) Fmi7 ‐ IImi7 requires F Dorian (Eb Major) Bb7 ‐ the largest variety of  choices, any dominant 7th scale (except Minor Blues) Ebma7 ‐ Eb Major or  Eb Lydian (BbMajor) Abma7 ‐ IV function requires Lydian (Eb Major) Ami7 ‐  IImi7  requires  A  Dorian  (G  Major) D7  ‐  the  largest  variety  of  choices,  any  dominant  7th  scale  (except  Minor  Blues) Gma7  ‐  G  Major  or  G  Lydian  (D  Major) (repeat  the  last  three  chords) F#mi7  ‐  IImi7  requires  F#  Dorian  (E  Major) B7  ‐  the  largest  variety  of  choices,  any  dominant  7th  scale  (except  Minor Blues) Ema7 ‐ E Major or E Lydian (B Major) C7+5 ‐ F Harmonic Minor  or C Super Locrian (C# Melodic Minor) (repeat the first five chords) Dbmi7 ‐  Dorian (Cb Major) Cmi7 ‐ Dorian (Bb Major) Bo7 ‐ W ½ Diminished scale (W  ½  W  ½  W  ½  W  ½) Bbmi7  ‐  IImi7  requires  Bb  Dorian  (Ab  Major) Eb7  ‐  the  largest  variety  of  choices,  any  dominant  7th  scale  (except  Minor  Blues) Abma7 ‐ Ab Major or Ab Lydian (Eb Major) GØ ‐ G locrian (Ab Major)  or F Harmonic Minor C7 ‐ F Harmonic Minor or C Super Locrian (C# Melodic  Minor)    When  embarking  on  this  more  complex  treatment,  be  sure  to  start  at  a  slower tempo and try to emphasize the 3rds and 7ths of chords. These are 

the most important chord tones in any chord and bring out the quality of  the chords (ma7, mi7, dom7,half‐diminished, etc.). Listen to recordings by  great artists, copy ideas that you like and incorporate them into your solo!   

Musical analysis of “All the Things You Are”    Written  in  four  flats.  Begins  in  F  minor;  modulates  to  C  Original Key  major,  G  major  and  E  major  before  returning  to  F  minor.  Ends in Ab major.  Form  A1 – A2 – B1 – B2‐ A1 – C  Tonality  Alternates between minor and major  Primarily leaps. “A” sections consist of a motif consisting of  a fourth up and a fifth down. In “B” and “C”, the leaps are  Movement  even  wider,  up  to  a  minor  seventh.  What  step‐wise  movement  exists  is  mostly  embellishing  tones  (neighbor  tones, appogiatura, etc.)    This  is  a  deceptively  simple  composition  showing  strong  Romantic/Impressionist  influences.  The  harmonic  progression  in  the  first  five  measures  is  identical  to  that  of  (the  latter  written)  “Fly  Me  To  The  Moon.” However, where the latter piece returns to its initial key by way of  a  viiø7  going  to  V7,  this  one  uses  the  clever  device  of  a  “common‐tone”  chord to modulate to an entirely new key and then goes on to do this three  more  times.  The  best  example  of  this  is  at  the  end  of  “B2”.  The  melody  lands  on  G#,  the  third  of  the  underlying  chord  of  E.  Then,  by  moving  one  note of the chord – B to C – it becomes a pivotal C+, allowing for an easy  return  to  F  minor.  Because  of  its  “pan‐tonal”  nature,  many  inexperienced  performers  are  intimidated  by  this  piece  in  the  beginning.  As  always,  the  melody should be learned “as is” before attempting improvisation. Keeping  in  mind  that  both  “A’s”  and  both  “B’s”  are  built  on  the  same  patterns  in  different  keys  will  make  mastery  of  this  piece  easier.  Also  realize  that  the  common  tone  of  the  modulation  is  actually  in  the  melody  the  first  four  times.     One of our visitors sent the following to us by email: “The tune would only  sound  like  one  of  Bach’s  compositions  if  the  melody  was  a  Bach  type.  It’s  not.  It’s  true  that  the  chord  progression  of  this  tune  gives  a  beautiful 

example  of  western  classical  harmonic  progression.  A  student  can  learn  a  great deal of knowledge about harmonic progression (e.g., VIm7 => IIm7 =>  V7 => Imaj7 => IVmaj7 in the first five bars, etc. And it is also true that this  type  of  progression  was  already  in  use  in  Bach’s  time.  But  this  does  not  mean  that  you  find  a  Bach  style  of  melody  and  counterpoint  in  this  tune,  unless  you  make  it  yourself  (as  own  inventions,  which  is  done  very  often.  Also, the tune does not have 32 bars, but 36 bars.”    The  writer  of  your  e‐mail  is  absolutely  correct  in  his/her  assessment  of  Zinsser’s  commentary.  Melodically,  this  piece  has  more  in  common  with  German  Romanticism  (Strauss,  Brahms,  Wagner,  et.  al.)  than  the  Baroque  style of Bach and Telemann. The type of chord progression (I would analyze  it more as f min: i ‐ iv[ii7/I in the new relative major key] ‐ Ab maj: V7 ‐ I ‐ IV,  but  its  a  subjective  thing  ‐  I  hear  it  in  f  minor,  whereas  he  may  hear  Ab  major  as  the  tonic  key)  was  indeed  in  use  during  the  Baroque  period,  however. If Bach had written a melody like this, chances are it would have  been  a  “cantus  firmus”  in  the  bass  with  ornate  counterpoint  in  the  upper  voices.  The  song  does  actually  lend  itself  to  Baroque‐type  counterpoint  quite  well.  However,  Zinsser  is  correct  in  that  this  piece  does  shift  tonal  centers quite frequently (one of the challenges in analyzing this piece). And  yes,  this  tune  indeed  contains  an  extra  four  measures.  Because  of  its  construction, this tends to go unnoticed.  I have this ´All the things you are´ progression:    / Fm7 / Bbm7 / Eb7 / Abmaj7 /   / Dbmaj7 / Dm7b5 G7 / Cmaj7 / % /    Im  using  arpegios  and  chromatic  aproxs.  But  besides  that,  what  kind  of  scales should I use?. Maybe St‐t on the dominants...Lydian over maj7s?..any  ideas?..  Pentatonics?.    A good place to start is to find a recording of the song where one of your  favorite players rips through a 4‐chorus solo and transcribe the entire solo.  See what kind of harmonic ideas they are using. 

I  personally  did  this  with  Hank  Mobleys  solo  on  "Prince  Albert"  (same  changes) from an Art Blakey record when I first became interested in really  learning to play changes. It gave me a lot of ideas and made me realize how  harmonically  exact  (while  at  the  same  time  beautifully  melodic)  Hank's  playing was.    A  common  way  to  give  the  progression  a  little  more  teeth  is  to  make  the  Abmaj7  into  Ab7.  You  can  also  tritone  sub  some  of  the  chords  in  the  first  four bars say:    Fm | Bb m7 | Em7 A7 | Eb m7 Ab 7| Dbmaj ........    or    Fm | Bb m 7 | Eb7 | D7 | Dbmaj .......    In  the  extension  of  the  last  A  section  there  all  also  a  few  different  possibilities for the changes. Last 8 of tune could be    Dbmaj| Db m 7| C m7 | B m7|  Bb m7 | Eb7 | Ab maj | C+7    or    Dbmaj| Db m 6| Abmaj | F 7 |.....    or I think I've seen it written with    Dbmaj| Db m 7| C m7 | B dim 7|    Really as a soloist you should be Okay to play any of these harmonies and  mix and match (as long as your piano player isn't sustaining 7 note chords  in which case there's not much room left for you to play anything)    In any case just try to play a nice melody. Hopefully the harmonic material  can aid your ear in that process.   

First off since I know Tomas is new to Jazz I would recommend not adding  more changes for now but in fact maybe simplfy the changes to see some  possibilities    the Dm7(b5) chord while is correct is not exactly needed imo. The G7 chord  is the sound that you are after. The key is to alter the dominant chords to  spice up this progression.    Fm7 | Bbm7 | Eb7(b5) | Abmaj9|   Dbmaj| G7(,b9) | Cmaj7| % |     Either  way  you're  dealing  with  Ab  major  for  the  first  5  bars  in    of  a  general  key.  it's  iV  ii  V  I  IV,  basically  everything  that  identifies  a  key  is  in  those chords. Therefore adding the b5 on the Eb7 chord can spice it up and  give you some choices in of what to play in that bar. The trick is when  you have 1 key for an extended period of time is to make it not sound like 1  key. it's the little choices that you want to make to give you the interest.    In  of the transition between Ab to the G altered chord, find the note  that is going to make that transition sound fully. Look at the chord tones    Db F Ab C (Eb G Bb) vs G B D F (Ab C# E)  There are similar tones going on here (enharmonic). But it are the half step  changes you want to accent on the transition between the bar (and of beat  4  and  beat  1)  They  are  rather  similar  chords  but  with  a  half  step  switch  from  one  chord  to  the  next  is  going  to  give  you  some  cool  ideas.  Try  something like going from an extention in the Dbmaj chord to a guide tone  in the G7 chord. Or visa versa or Extention to extention.    The point is the key is how you alter the dominant chords to leave your key  for just a bar to give you some interesting ideas when you have 1 key for a  long  period  of  time.  That's  what  can  make  ii  V  I's  interesting.  Not  ever  V  chord  is  just  a  F7  chord,  but  it's  got  to  be  altered  to  avoid  harmonic  bordom.    I  always  found  the  bridge  to  be  the  best  part  of  this  tune  and  the  last  section to be the most challenging. The Bridge, ii V I's so there in lays the 

challenge of this tune, how to make this progression interesting!    |A‐ | D7 |Gmaj|%|  |F#m|B7|Ebmaj|C7(#5,b9)|    Pretty  simply  changes,  I  love  the  Gmaj  to  Emaj  progression,  always  loved  that bridge    ‐‐‐  Man...is the Eb7 a lydian dominant??? The way I hear it is like Eb7b9. Which  can in many circles be seen as diminished....but in my circle I see the first A  section as simply this.    Ab Ionian........than Ab harmonic major for the doinant to give you the flat  9...I like to keep the Dbmaj7 as what is becaue Ab Ionain brings you back to  a Lydain sound on that chord which I love. I guess that a Bb over a G7 might  sound odd in the following ii V but after so much Ab it sounds right for the  brief  moment  if  done  right.  The  ii‐V  in  C  is  rather  plain  So  I  like  to  keep  ripping on Ab Ionian to give you some alt notes on that ii V and resolve to C  which has to be one of my favorite changes....I see more harmonic major in  this tune.    One thing I think is important is pretty simple‐sounding; learn to play your  major scales. And I mean, really learn to play them.    I  was  at  small's  this  weekend  playing  in  a  band  with  Lage  Lund,  and  one  thing that strikes me about his playing is that he can make music out of just  about anything. Give him only one chord, and he's off to the races with 50  different  (diatonic)  ideas,  before  he  even  plays  a  note  out  of  the  scale.  When you have this kind of vocabulary and imagination, you can make a lot  out of a little.    I think that this is why bebop is such great training. Essentially, bebop is a  bunch of melodic possibilities. If you listen to how the great bebop players  can  get  a  lot  of  mileage  out  of  some  simple  changes  without  having  to  resort to numerous alternative scales and substitutions, you will find a good  foundation for your explorations. 

I  say,  sit  down  with  the  tune  and  listen  for  melodies...  And  keep  transcribing  melodies  from  your  favorite  artists  and  trying  to  apply  them  where you hear them.    When you learn to maximize the basic scales, then the substitutions will be  a lot more rich and meaningful.    ‐‐‐    S'funny.  I've  never  really paid a huge amount of attention to guide tones;  but it's the guide tones that really make this part of the tune hang together.    Watch the motion of the 3rds and 7ths through this age:    / Ab (3rd of Fm7)/ Ab (7th of Bbm7)/ G (3rd Eb7)/ G (maj7 of AbMaj7)/    / F (3rd of DbMaj7) / F(3rd of Dm7b5) F(7th of G7)/ E (3rd of CMja7)/ % /    The  opposite  3rds  and  7ths  have  nice  motion  too.  Walk  the  guide  tones,  and  connect  them  with  a  little  bit  of  stuff,  and  you  can't  help  but  make  beautiful music.     Chords  and  modes:  the  harmonic  structure  of  the  peice  is  weird  and  wonderful. I don't think I can do it justice.     Fm7 (dorian) BbM7/Eb7/Abmaj7 (ii‐V‐I of AbMaj7).     We'll come back to that. The magic is easier to see in the second phrase.    Dbmaj7 (lydan, IVmaj of Ab)    Dm7b5 G7 is a standard minor ii/V heading toward Cminor, but the phrase  deceptively resolves to CMaj instead. This is characteristic of the A section:  four  4‐bar  phrases,  each  resolving  on  a  major  7th  chord,  each  using  an  unusual  progression  to  reach  a  Maj7  that  isn't  what  you  would  expect.  In  the case of the second four bars, it's easier to see: we expect C minor, there  but we play C Maj7 instead.  

In  the  first  four  bars,  I'd  argue  for  the  following  analysis  (although  others  may  be  able  to  analyse  it  better):  Fm7  is  dorian;  we  should  be  heading  toward EbMaj7 (or Ab7 as a V of Eb), but the sleight of hand in this phrase  takes  place  in  bar  two.  Instead  of  going  to  EbMaj7,  we    through  Eb7,  using  Eb7  as  a  V  of  the  ii‐V‐I  of  AbMaj7.  How  does  the  Fm7  relate  to  the  AbMaj7? Either that first fm7 should be Fminor/Maj7 (aeolion), but it isn't,  because it's m7; or the AbMaj7 should be Ab7, in order for the first and last  chord  to  have  a  sensible  relationship  to  each  other.  And  that's  the  core  mechanism of the tune: Fm going to Ab7, but we arrive at AbMaj7 instead!  And then we head towards Cm, but arrive at CMaj7 instead! And so forth  for two more phrases.    So  why  does  the  tune  work  at  all?  Because  of  the  beatiful  descending  motion  of  the  3rds  and  7ths  through  the  progression:  it  sounds  just  like  normal cadences, because the motion of the 3rds and 7ths is close to what  we're used to; but different, because it really is different.    My advice: go with the flow of the tune (play the ii‐V‐1 in the first phrase as  exactly that). Understand where the harmonic suprises are, and make sure  you're  hitting  the  strong  notes  of  the  surprises.  (e.g.  when  you  hit  the  CMaj7,  E‐Natural  is  a  very  big  note,  because  we're  expecting  Eb,  not  E‐ Natural).  The  surprise  notes  are  consistently  3rds  or  7ths.  If  in  doubt,  try  following  the  guide  tones;  and  once  you've  navigated  the  odd  changes,  embrace the places that you end up in.    ‐‐‐    Just to make sure ‐ shouldn't the 7th measure be an Emajor?    yes typo from long ago  Discussion of the song's form and harmony  Its verse is rarely sung now, but the main chorus has become a favourite with singers and jazz musicians. The chorus is a 36-measure AA2BA3 form that features two twists on the usual 32-bar AABA song-form: A2 transposes the initial A section down a fourth, while the final A3 section

adds an extra four bars. Note: The harmonic analysis demonstrates the use of the compositional technique known as "circle of fifths." The chords of the A2 section precisely echo those of the initial eight measure A section, except the roots of each chord in the initial A section are lowered (transposed down) by a perfect 4th interval. So Fmi7 in A becomes Cmi7 in A 2, Bbmi7 becomes Fmi7, Eb7 becomes Bb7, etc. In the same vein, the melody sung over A2 is identical to the A section melody except every pitch of every melody note is also lowered by a perfect 4th interval. The first 5 measures of A3 are identical to the initial 8 measure long A and A2 sections. In the 6th measure, A3 takes a new path that does not come to an end until the 12 measure of the section. The modulations in this song are very unusual for a pop song of the period, and present challenges to a singer or improviser, including a semitone modulation that ends each A section (these modulations start with measure 6 in the A and A2 sections and measure 9 of the A3 section), and a striking use of enharmonic substitution at the turnaround of the B section (last two measures of the B Section), where the G# melody note over a E major chord turns into an A-flat over the F minor 7th of measure 1 of section A3. The result is a tune that in the space of every chorus manages to include at least one chord built on every note of the Western 12-tone scale - a fact that was celebrated in jazz pianist Alex von Schlippenbach's serialist reimagining of it on his album Twelve Tone Tales.[ Because of its combination of a strong melody and challenging but logical chord structure, "All the Things You Are" has become a popular jazz standard, and its changes have been used for such tunes as "Bird of Paradise" by Charlie Parker, "Prince Albert" by Kenny Dorham and "Boston Bernie" by Dexter Gordon. (Lee Konitz's "Thingin'" even introduces a further harmonic twist by transposing the chords of the second half of the tune by a tritone.) The beboppers introduced two favourite devices into performances of this tune, which are still sometimes encountered in performance: one is a brief introduction and conclusion that parodies Rachmaninoff's prelude op. 3 no.2; the other is an interpolation of the donkey's song from Ferde Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite.
