Hi, bit of an update. I have an OLD 1998, 2.0L 406 estate. The snow and sports l ights flash and the box drops into 'safe mode' 5 minutes into a morning journey. I am able to clear this when the engine warms up after a mile or so. Having eve ntually found a Peugeot 406 workshop manual that mentions the AL4 gearbox, I hav e found that it has an 'Oil Wear Counter' that counts down to zero after "6000 h ours of operation at an oil temp below 95degrees C." After this it flashes the l ights and go into 'Safe-Mode' I have replaced the gearbox oil (very easy job) Th e oil (ESSO LT 71141) cost £33.89 from Peugeot. The hard part now is to get the 'O il Wear Counter' re-set to zero. I have tried a few independents who couldn't ge t into the gearbox ECU so I think I will have to ask Peugeot to do it and pay th e price (should only be a 15 min job) I will let you all know how I get on and i f it solves the problem. Will they REALLY update the software and clear the auto-box adaptive memory.? Will they JU ST do a gearbox oil change and not find a bunch of other thing that 'have' to be done.? I need to do something soon but can't afford to spend too much more on t his car. I'll let you know how I get on. Anyone else solved this problem on an o lder 406.? 201 406 Peugot Auto, gearbox had a complete rebuild £1,300. Still flashing twin li ghts. Advised to have diagnostic test for pressure. Hopefully this will cure it. It seems to be bad gearboxes on Peugots. Was told they last 50,000 miles. The pr evious owner had the same problem and I read it had a new gearbox so I obviously thought mine would be alright. Still no problems here so the solution appears to be the following. Take the car to a main dealers ask them to run a diagnostic on the computer. Thi s will throw up an error code if the solenoid in the gearbox needs replacing (£400 ish) If you are lucky enough that the fault code doesn't show up then get the de aler to put the most upto date software on your computer, clear all fault codes AND reset the adaptive gearbox learning. This is what I did and it cost me £60 all in and the gearbox message has stopped : o) Hello all, A known problem on the Peugeot autoboxes when starting from cold is a stuck or d efective pressure control solenoid. A series of solenoids are fitted in the box which control the oil pressure applied to the gear paddles/plates and hence gear you are driving in. The solenoids receive commands from the gearbox ECU in response to speed sensors on the grear box shafts, and are known as the input (TSS) and output (VSS) spee d sensors. The ECU determines the gear by monitoring these speeds. Specific error codes should be generated, that point to these solenoids being th e issue. Other codes will indicate ECU issues etc. Replacement is not tricky, but does need the sump cover removing after the oil i s drained to reach the solenoids. All in all, it takes about 1-2 hours and is be st done by a gearbox specialist. Prices will range from £200 - £400

tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt Before my warranty ended, I sent the car in for my last warranty service. Among them I complained about about slight 1st gear jerks (which was not present befor e), and again I complained about the slow coolant loss that I have. They dismiss ed it as nothing, and they said that they did not find any "error codes" upon PP S electronic diagnosis. I got the car returned, and I did not have time to follow up. About 2 months lat er the snow & sports finally turned on. By then they claimed that my WARRANTY is already over. I am sure that the gearbox was already showing signs of problems before the warr anty ended, but it is their word against mine. It is also their argument that si nce the PPS electronic diagnosis did not show up any error, they cannot do anyth ing then (before warranty ended) When I sent the car in after the "snow and sports" lights turned on, it was then that they opened the Valve Body cover and discovered white paste (present of wa ter). They said water ingress is external and blaimed it on the car being driven through a flood. Do you guys out there think I have a VALID CASE ? WHAT should I do and how do I argue my case in the Tribunal ? Are there any legal minds out there, who can giv e some advise ? I did some digging and found this:1) Workshop claimed "The heat exchanger is in good condition and also understand s from technical cell that this type is a improved version", but this is incorre ct. They also did not do any leak tests on the Heat Exchanger, yet they arrived at the conclusion that it is OK. I found out that the Heat Exchanger (Distrib Chamber) on my car has part number 2275.47. This has been superceded by part number 2275.59. Does anyone has access to information on why the part has been superceded ?? 2) Found out Peugeot Technical documents that states that there is a defect in t he AL4 gearbox Breather Plug (Snifting Valve) PN 2268-20. According to the docum ent, if you drive through a puddle of water or flood of 7cm in height at between 10 to 80 km/hr, it will cause water to enter the gearbox through the Breather P lug. This will cause Delay in engaging 1st gear, or shock when changing gear. Th e document says that 1 draining or several of the ATF does not always prove suff icient to regain normal gearbox operation; in the case overhaul or replace gearb ox. They have since come out with a new Breather Plug (PN 5126-13) which solved the problem. Does someone out there who has access to the system to check the gearbox revisio n on my car if I give you the VIN number ? If so can you send me a email, so I c an you ? The workshop refused warranty on 2 grounds, that is, 1) my car is out of warrant y 2) the water ingress is external and I have driven the car through a flood. Th ey offered a solution, for which I have to pay for. Flush the gearbox (12 litres ), and change the Valve Body, and see if it works. I have discovered that disconnecting the b attery for a few minutes makes the car "new-like" again. it gives me a few days of good ride with no transimission problems. than the problem appears here and t hen, and after a week it is again appears all the time. driving fast in corners makes it appear more frequently. I switched gear-computers with another 406, and the problem remained in my car. the other car was doing OK with my computer. Oi l was checked as well. software update was done. Diagnostics usualy showes probl em of "supply to the sensors" and sometimes "pressure regulation". when the faul t apears, pressure, heat and accelerator position are all miss-read and gives co nstant values. what can be the problem? hi The AL4 has always been a problem auto box ever since it came out. snow and spor t lights flashing, limp home mode etc etc. if you have some diagnostic equipment what you need to do is this. look at the pressure regulation figure it should b e around 2.5. when the fault comes on does it zoom up to somewhere between 5 and 9bar?. if so your fault may be the pressure regulation valves which lie in the hydraulic block.
