02.05 Rise of the Political Machines
A social issue that arose in the 1900s was the development of child labor. By this time, about 18% of all American workers were under the age of 16. Children were working dangerous jobs, such as in mines and factories, with high risk of harm and danger. Many businesses and factories particularly wanted children as labor workers because they could be paid lesser wage than adults, and because they were more easily managed than adults, not to mention it would be more difficult for children to organize unions and strikes. List of Demands: 1. Children under 16 are not allowed to work. 2. Children working on factories and in mines must be provided with masks and necessary safety gear. 3. Child laborers working the tasks of adult-level jobs will be paid wages like an adult. 4. Child labor hours must be cut. 5. Children must have basic training to obtain the skills for their job; this means they are required to attend school.
